do you like to sew things for use today that may not last for years, so things like fashionable little tops, things to use round the house and so on, or do you prefer to put your efforts into items that will be cherished by your descendants years after you have gone? I mean things like fine needlework that only gets used on special occasions, or samplers that get framed and displayed but not used up. Where do you get inspiration for your heirloom sewing projects?

I learned a long time ago that items I may have put a lot of time and work into may not be as valued by the user as I would wish. The beautiful prom dress I made a young girl who couldn't afford one ended up as the dog's bed the week after prom, ------- aw well, she looked lovely the night of prom. But that taught me----make the items because I enjoy doing it, if it is valued by others that is frosting on the cake.

thats a good way to look at it, but how awful about the dress. I do sometimes think the young have no sense of the value of lovingly hand made items any more, when I was a girl I would have been thrilled to have a nice dress made for me

when i sew i try to sew the things so that they will last but i am really rough on my clothes and stuff so they very seldomly do last and then if they are beyond repair i will usually find something else to use them for some of the things i would like to hand down to my decendants but not everything that i have sewn that would be just too much for them to keep up with besides most decendants now a days do not care about cherishing things or memories especially if it is anything of money value
