How attached are you to your pet?

I have a cat i've had for seven years and a dog that i've had for four. I could not bear to lose either of them and love them dearly. My sister on the other hand has three cats and a dog shes had for two years. She could not really be bothered to care either way about them too much. There have been a few instances I've had happen to my family where they almost chose to put the animal down instead of paying for the vet bills that come from accident or medical problems. So I guess my question is how attached are you to your pet and how much money would you spend on them before you thought it was too much?

Call me a nut, but I spent over $300 on my first pet. It was a cat that I found on my doorstep one day, his arm all mangled. I felt so sorry for him. I took him to the vet and he needed so much done, including 2 full rounds of worm shots. I mean he was pitiful! Oddly enough, I just knew he'd be a great pet. And I really needed someone to keep me company. I've always had a good job so money really isn't an issue. If it was a child you'd pay the medical bills right? So, what's the difference? Since then I've taken in many other cats. I feel like an adoption agency. As of right now I have 3 cats left in my care. Are they spoiled rotten? You bet! They get treats every day. They have their own room, even though they spend most of their time right in my lap. I even give these cats a bath about 3-4 times a year! Yes, you can give a cat a bath, very carefully. Lol! Am I attached to my kitties? They are my kids, my babies. They understand things I tell them....I sware they do. They are very verbal with me as well. They let me know when I've slacked on litter duty and such. I love them!

That is a very touching story of your first cat. Thank you for sharing. I wish I had the resources to take in as many stray cats as you have. There are many around here and I just feel so sorry for them, especially in these cold months.

Aww, I wish I could take them all in as well! Just remember, if you save just one animal, you've saved more than most.

It will always be for me with my 6 animals the quality of life after treatment. My daschund had the ruptured disc last year would have started at 3000.00$ for surgery. BUT no guarantees outcome would be any better than the conservative treatment of rest and steroids. So, if I had the money the decision would still have been the same. She is 9 years old , overweight, and just putting her to sleep would be risky. So, If I could afford any treatment to make them better at age 8 and up I would, but common sense should always play an important part in your decision.

I did not even think about the quality of life aspect of it. Thank you for your comment, it made me think about my question some more.

I have 2 cats. One I have it for 3 years and the other one for 6 months.I'm very attached to both of them. I even talk to them...lol...& they also communicate with me. If ever the question arise about treating them I would definitely do whatever will be the best for them.

I am very attatched to all of my animals. I have 2 potbelly pigs, 5 Italian Greyhounds and 2 Jack Russells. They all live in my house. I could not live without them!! I would take out a loan if I had to save one of my animals.

Wow that many dogs plus two pigs? I don't know how you manage that many legs, especially in the house with you. Thank you for sharing.
