Do you eat a lot of bread?

January 13, 2009 3:32am CST
I find that bread is one of the most convenient foods around. I really love the taste of bread, and like nothing better than a sandwich for my lunch at work. And toast, it is one of those foods that when you smell it you just need a slice. However, on my New Years diet of all things healthy, I am trying to cut down on bread, and if I do have it, then it will be wholegrain and healthy. How about you, do you like bread? Do you eat it often?

I make my own homemade bread now. Since i started doing that i dont eat as much of it. But i always make sure to have plenty of flour and corn tortellias around.

Home-made bread is just great, so I'm pleased to hear that you make it. It would be good if more people made their own bread, that way you know exactly what goes into the loaf. Thanks for your response :)

That is exactly why i started making it myself. Really surprized me how easy it is to make too. I dont have to worry about the bread getting squashed on the way home either. Lol! I shop at Sams club and Costco so i get a big 50lb. of flour. Unfortunatley they dont have wheat flour so i have to go somewhere else to get that.

Lots of baking can be easy and fun when you get down to it. I'm glad that you find it easy too. :)

Hmmm....speaking about bread I think I must go and get a loaf of jumbo bread when I go to the market afterwards. My husband and I are bread eaters. but for 2009 we haven't eaten bread yet...!! I don't know how are loaves of bread packed in your country but in my place, every loaf of bread has a square plastic sealer that comes with the bread with expiry date on it. For the whole of 2008 I kept the square plastic seals just to make a count on how many loaves of bread we ate. And recently I just took all the plastics out to count and hey we ate 24 loaves of jumbo size loaves of bread in 2008. Is that a lot ???? because we travelled in a car downs south last year around 4 trips so I made sandwiches to bring along to eat.

Our loaves come in all shapes and sizes, often sealed in plastic bags which are funnily enough, loaf shaped. However, I usually send my husband to the local bakery to get freshly baked bread buns. It is good to support local businesses, and the bread is always lovely and fresh. 24 loaves is 2 per month, so 1 every 2 weeks, half a loaf a week. Doesn't sound like too much in those terms, but it depends on the size of the loaf. Is jumbo really jumbo? Making sandwiches for a journey is a great idea, it means you don't have to stop and find somewhere to eat, and then end up paying a fortunate for something you would never normally choose. Another great way of saving money, and making use of a really versatile food. Thanks for your response :)

I wouldn't say I ate a lot of bread, but I do eat some every day. I usually have cereal at breakfast, but sometimes if I am hungry I will add just one piece of toast too. We make our own bread which is sugar free (soda bread), because I have a problem metabolising sugar, so I gave up all products that contained and lost all my excess weight. I think sugar is a bigger health problem than wheat, but the problem with most commercial bread is that is does contain sugar, and that is where I was gaining my excess weight.. :-) Derek

When you have a moment, I would be interested in learning your recipe of soda bread as I like to have a change now and again. :-) Derek

I have a great recipe for soda bread, it is lovely with soup because of its think consistency. Sorry to hear about your struggle with sugar, hope that you are on top of it now. Thanks for your response :)

i love bread, and yep it really is convenient. it's really filling too. but i prefer white bread like gardenia to wholemeal bread. though i know that the latter is a healtheir choice. i usually eat bread with butter mostly. sometimes, i make an egg sandwich, other times, i dip the bread into the egg(it is whipped of course:P) and then fry it on the frying pan. it's delicious that way too though not as healthy hehe i won't be cutting down on it anytime soon.

I love bread so much! I'd eat it even without anything like peanut butter or cheese. I love it just the way it is. German Bread, Spanish Bread, French Bread, i love them all! Whole grain is ok too but it just got a weird texture on my mouth but i'll get used to it and will soon love it. Sometimes i think breads were made for me lol! You should try the locally made "Monay" or "Monalisa" hehe.. It's a simple bread that smells good and with a creamy taste. Wow, I didn't know there's someone here who loves bread more than i do.

Sounds like you are definitely a bread-oholic. French bread is great with soft cheese, especially when it is really fresh - yummy. And oh the smell of bread, just divine. Never heard of Monay or Monalisa, sounds good though. Thanks for your response :)

Spanish Bread - Buttery sweet bread.
I don't know if you're familiar with German and Spanish Bread. German Bread is a small bread with something like powdered choco filling. It usually has 3 openings in the middle to exposed the chocolatey part. Spanish bread is butter filled bread but it's a lot sweeter. The one i'm showing you on the photo is the Spanish bread.

Hello icequeen123! I do not really eat a lot of bread. However, when I crave for bread, I would really eat a big amount of it. Oftentimes, I do prefer wholegrain because it is healthier compared with regular bread. There are instances when I am on a rush and so all I eat for breakfast is bread. Just thinking about it makes me hungry... It's dinner time on my side of the world...

Hi dolce! I sometimes struggle with craving bread, and its true when you make up your mind that you want bread, nothing else will satisfy. Well done for choosing wholegrain though, much better for you than white. Thanks for your response :)

The main food for me is the rice, but I will take bread sometimes. Maybe the culture different, if I take bread as the main food in a meal, I will feel that I lose a meal while take in too many snacks. I know bread is very delicious, I still can not accept it as one of the main food in my family now. Now I take it once a week at most.

I love bread. Fortunately I have changed the bread I eat to whole wheat and multigrains...so it's not so bad if I have another slice. I love the ones with nuts in them as well. The multigrainier the better in my mind.

Yes. I eat a lot of bread but only wholewheat, high fiber bread. I think I average to 5 slices in a day. I usually have a lunch of tuna salad with a lot of vegetables and I eat my toast with it. Whenever i get hungry and there aren't any fruits available, I toast a piece of bread and add a bit of honey if it is available. I don't like white bread because why remove the nutrients nature provided for us? Even if it is fortified, the man-made form of course is no match compared to what was naturally there. Also the bleaching process uses chemicals which aren't good for us. It really must always be wholewheat bread! ^__^

Wholewheat is definitely the way to go, and I agree that white bread is not very good for us if it has been de-natured in the baking process. Thanks for your response. :)

I eat bread too but not that much and not that often. I used to eat white bread before. But when i started to search about the health benifits, i now prefer the wheat bread (wholegrain) coz it's healthy. Some people don't mind eating a lot of white bread because they are just after the carbs to get full.

Wholegrain is definitely a healthier choice. Thanks for your response :)

I think I use to eat more bread when I was younger, and I never branched out from white bread...LOL. but now that I am more health concience I eat multi-grain and wheat breads, and probably only once or twice a week vs. I use to have a sandwhich a day. Not that I dont enjoy breads and the bread baskets when we go out to eat, but that has become a treat for me.

I had bread for breakfast daily. At times, lunch is also bread, especially when I am scheduled to go client's place. White bread is nice to eat and appears more tasty however the bread I have at home is always wholemeal bread. There seems to be endless supply of it. LOL.

I love bread, I grew up eating bread with every meal, whether it was biscuits or light bread, so I think I got used to it. I'm diabetic so I can't have alot of bread anymore because its starchy and it turns to sugar, so I eat wheat bread or whole grain, but I've cut down alot on it, I only allow myself to eat one slice of bread at a meal, when before I could eat three..lol.

Yeah, you definitely have to be careful with your health, so glad that you eat whole grain these days. It is such a great food, so it's good that you have not had to cut it out completely. Thanks for your response :)

I love fresh bread and I have sandwiches almost every day for lunch and aside from breakfast I find toast makes a great snack. Unfortunately what I eat the most is white bread; it is fibre enriched but not as healthy as wholegrain!

I had loads of bread when I was a kid, every single day. When I have bread now I try to limit it to good wholegrains, and only have one or two slices or buns per day. But it is just so addictive, and yummy! Thanks for your response :)
