Which anti-virus to choose?

i have been using AVG 8.0 Free edition for the past 6 months and it seemed to work fine but lately i have noticed that it doesn't heal infected files it just deletes it. Recently i installed it in one of my friends PC which was full of viruses and Trojans as soon as it updated i initiated a scan for the entire pc it caught like 50 viruses and Trojans and it even caught some system files and when i pressed the button to heal those files it says that some files cannot be healed and if force cleaning is applied the system will crash. I am really wondering should i shift to another anti-virus please any good anti-virus recommendations from various anti-virus users.

I have another suggestion and it is Comodo Internet Security. It is an integration of Comodo Firewall and Comodo Antivirus. The Antivirus is no longer in a beta phase. The firewall may be annoying at the initial stage but it is better than ZoneAlarm, at least when it comes to user control. So far CIS works well with AVG 8 Free Edition and Avast Home Edition. I have had CIS running together with AVG and with Avast on another system without facing any problem. all the best, rosdimy

I read about it comodo has good features and it has one of the best firewalls in the world but the rest of it is not too good and o used zonealarm once and i was impressed by it but it was a resource hog an the avg 8 is good but too many false positives and avast is good too thanks a lot for your response and sorry for the late response.

I do agree that the antivirus part of CIS is not the best. NEvertheless the latest version is a lot better than the previous version. So far it has managed to detect vituses which it was unable to sniff out before this. In its paranoid mode suspected viruses are flagged, and the user is given the option to have it deleted, ignored, or quarantined.

Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 - If you want absolute and utter control over every 1 and 0 that enters and exits your computer, Kaspersky is the app for you. I honestly don't think you can get any more secure than with Kaspersky locking down your system, but it was overkill even for me, and I had trouble convincing it not to remove some applications I knew were OK and actually wanted on my PC. Kaspersky is a hungry shredder with no reverse button (and it's on the slow side, too). $80. (Anti-virus only is $60.) I put NOD32 in this category; it's very similar in operation but can be heavy-handed.

yes utter control is the thing i need i would have clearly opted for kaspersky but it eats and drains my new pc with 4GB ram and 2.4 ghz processor and i have heard that nod32 is smooth in running and is affordable as well thanks a lot for your response.

well i think that the best ANti virus is norton antivirus because it has the lastest updates of the lastest virus and it is made everyday and my computer keep running normally for several years with norton

Yes Norton is the best when it comes to detection rates but it slows down the pc very much and its updates are big and huge like Mcafee so i don't like Norton it consumes too much of resources thanks a lot for your valuable response .

I believe the best is Norton, but that is expensive, and also slows down the PC somewhat. Otherwise you can use Nod32, or Avast. They are good. But you will have to buy the original software to get total protection. Downloading the free version will not help.

Yes Norton is the best but it slows the PC down so much and its expensive too i am considering using either Nod 32 or bit-defender avast has poor looks and interface and the annoying sound it makes when it catches a threat thanks a lot for your recommendations.

Yes AVG and Avast are good choices when it comes free anti-virus but free doesn't mean complete protection does it thanks a lot for your response.

I would recommend AVAST. It is free and it is really efficient. It also takes less resources than any other anti-virus. If I were you I would give it a try. (c) ronaldinu 2009 - the more people I meet-the more I love my dog

yes i have used avast too real good detection rates and it doesn't even slow down the PC that much but the annoying sound it makes after it catches a threat is awful and the interface is bad too anyways thanks a lot for your response and what is the exact meaning of those last phrases of yours.

I think that is the weak point of some antivirus. It doesn't heal infected system files, but rather gives you the option to quarantine or delete it. I think avast has this feature to create a database of system files so as to restore such file when infected with antivirus. However, if the files were infected before you install it then it is useless. If the files which were infected are the operating system files, say windows xp, i think you can restore/repair those files using the windows xp installer. I find avg low in memory requirement but weak in detecting virus compared to other antivirus like avast. Avast is nice but when i compared its memory usage with other antivirus like avira, I would prefer avira.

i think that's the only back draw of using free anti-virus or AVG anti-virus that sit doesn't heal infected system files i think avast does heal infected files alright but its annoying interface is the problem and the sound it makes after it catches a threat is the thing that keeps me away from avast as far as avira goes it is pretty slow in scanning and consumes a lot of resources as u have mentioned thanks a lot for your response i will give it a thought if trying either avast or nod 32.

I've been using eScan Antivirus for about 2 years now. It's very easy to use, low resources needed and it's engine is up to date. The same as Kaspersky. The best of it is, I can scan while doing my stuffs. Even while playing online games since it only eats a few of my Computer's memory. It can still perform good even if your on a Pentium II processor.

I use AVG as my anti-virus software too. However, I will also install Avira as my gatekeeper. In fact, the current virus always attack the system file and registry. It is easy for anti-virus software to recover the registry but it is difficult to heal the system file. Most system file will lock when you are using the operation system. That's why you cannot heal and recover them. You can try to turn on your computer with safe mode of your operation system. It may help you to prevent lock of some system files. Moreover, you can download the virus removal tools from the anti-virus official site. It can help you to remove virus and Trojans too.

i too thought that AVG and Avira were good but too many false positives and the latest version of AVG made my system crash so i am worried about using free anti-virus and i have sued some virus tools of Mcafee and Avira and i am actually impressed by their scanning speeds thanks a lot for your valuable input and sorry for a late response.

i find AVG very good. if a file cannot be healed it will move to vault. i dont like when that happens but maybe it cannot be healed so better deleted than infecting the pc
• India
16 Jan 09
Yes AVG free as well as paid are pretty good but they just cannot heal infected files can they they just send them virus vault or they directly delete them i find that tough to digest though i like it i am considering moving to either to NOD 32 or Bit-defender as kaspersky is too heavy on resources thanks a lot for your response and keep mylotting.

i'am currently using eset nod32 and wow, i haven't been disappointed i have tried the beta of kaspersky and found it to be good as nod32 but i prefer nod32 since i felt that that nod 32 was better but both anti-virus does not slow your system down like norton which sucks
• India
16 Jan 09
Yes Norton sucks as it kills any PC but i am thinking of giving a try for nod 32 as kaspersky is similar to Norton as it too consumes a lot of resources anyways thanks a lot for your response.

yes it has a good detection rate but the annoying thing is that it doesn't heal infected files with .exe extension strange but true. I am looking to move to some other anti-virus thanks for your response.

i suggest you to use avira my friend, it is better than AVG. AVG will slow down PC, that is why I don't use it and not good enough for adware....have a great day!
