I've just put together my own self-hosted wordpress blog. I've been agonizing over what and how to do it for several months now and I got tired of procastinating so I went ahead. The tutorial I used as a guide suggested Hostgator as hosting provider so that's what I use for now. However, at $9.95/month for a basic package, it's rather pricey. So, would you please suggest a good but cheap hosting service that supports WordPress 2.7?

You may have a look at Godaddy.com. If you are not concerned of subdomains, you can check brinkster.com. It's free but you'll have a url like YOURSITE.brinkster.com. If you are good at ASP programming, I recommend you Brinkster, because they allow ASP/ .NET hosting for free.

I'm afraid I'm not good at programming. I'm not trained in any of these and I get by learning things by myself. Ah, that's the downside of being cheap, I guess. I'll have a look at Brinkster and see if it's something I can handle. In all fairness, Hostgator is very easy and their customer support is awesome.

Honestly I haven't much experience with WordPress so I can't give you any details on that. However, I know a couple of free hosting services that you can look at and see if they meet your requirements. I've had experiences with two: Freehostia: Free webhost that works well and it's very organized. I've used it for my site for a couple of months before switching because for some reason my edits in file manager weren't being updated on the site itself (I think this is because of my IP or the Internet in my country). I know a number of people that have used Freehostia that have solid sites and no complaints. Freewebs: Since you mentioned that you don't have much experiences with coding, this may be the webhost for you. It's very user friendly and not complicated; it's very easy to find your way around file manager without getting lost. I have very positive experiences with this webhost and my friend and I are currently hosting our site here. Both site will, I think, have adequate space and bandwidth, at least for a start. There are options to upgrade later if you need more, but they come at a price. I suggest you compare these two hosts (and maybe a couple of other ones if these aren't what you're looking for) and see which one best suits what you want. Hope this helped, and good luck with your blog!

Godaddy is the best if you want PHP and MYSQL. If you dont use none of them, you can look for cheapers ones. If you dont have a lot of experience and dont want to learn, Yahoo is very easy but not so cheap.
