Garlic is not that famous here in Netherlands. I mean, most of the dutch people don't like the smell of garlic. But in the Philippines, we always used garlic in different ways like medicine for some health reasons and especially in the kitchen for cooking. My husband loves it very much except when he is going to work. He told me not to put garlic on his food when he has to go to work. His colleagues might smell him and would stay away from him because of the "garlic smell". Please share yours as well...

i am a filipina and i live in the philippines. per your discussion, i can feel how lucky am i for having stayed around through the years. i feel this way because, i use garlic in almost all the foods that i cook except for rice and kakanins. i know of some filipinos who also add garlic to the rice that they are cooking. the reason? it is good for the heart. well, your husband has a good point in requesting you to help him stay out of garlic meals when he will be going out. i understand why you must oblige per his request.

Hello. Am happy to hear from one of my "kababayan". Thank you for the response. I think that is fried rice when you put garlic on it. Forgot about that garlic is good for the heart. I will tell my husband about it. If I have my stepson, when we make spaghettie there's no garlic. The taste here is really different and weird, Lol. Have a good night!

Oh...... I love the smell of fried garlic. Whenever I bought some fried peanuts on the street vendor I see to it that it has some fried garlic in it. Some vendor probably get irritated but they just can't complain because ofcourse I am buying. But I've some would though that... you should buy fried garlic instead of peanut. hahaha. And I do love to saute garlic frist whenever I cook food. and it add some good taste to the food. I assume you have missed the Philippines. anyways... nothing really chnage. It is still a very beautiful place.

Reading your response made me missed the Philippines even more such as my family, friends and more of our foods. Your right, peanuts on the street got a tempting smell from the sauted garlic. They don't have it here, huhuhu! And I'm very much sure we are from the same country. Thank you for bringing the memories again. You should be in bed now. Have a good night.

If you eat garlic with cheese your breath is not smelly:P It's confirmed;) In winter my mum always make's me sandwitches with garlic and she puts cheese on them so after eating I can talk freely with my friends. Garlic is grat to intensify the taste of spaghetti of fried rice, too. You just need some self control, too much of it can ruin the taste of a dish:P

I love the taste of garlic, and what makes it even better are the health benefits that is has! However, I do agree that it can make your breath quite smelly and unfortunately, the smell tends to linger for hours after after eating! Therefore I try to avoid eating food which has a lot of garlic if I am about to go out, or I will brush my teeth after the meal.

I love the smell of garlic, but your hubby is right, it has a strong strong smell after you eat it!! I think that if you eat parsley after you eat something really garlicy it will help with that.. or maybe he could take some of those listerine pocket pack things with him to help mask the smell.. if he REALLY wanted to still have garlic in his food. or wait till he gets home. . Oh i love garlic.

It would be okay if his colleagues don't mind the smell of it. He brushed his teeth and then chewed some gum but good thing none of them noticed it.

Hi there janyen. I have started a discussion similar to these. I do love garlic and I usually include garlic in almost all the food that I cook. It is really nice to include them since it does bring a lot of flavor and of course, garlic also does bring beneficial effects to our health.

Hi, We do use Garlic in cooking at times . Somehow; we do not like it too much and just eat it occasionally . I do read articles that say it is good for health;inspite of its pungent smell . Yet; we cannot bring ourselves to eat it more .

In my household, Garlic Is often Used! Here's why - I've always been a advid reader & as someone who's always had her nose in Books, I've done a lot of reading about the Health benifots that Garlic as a herb is suppose to do. For instance, it helps keep your immune system in check & can help prevent You from getting the Flu or severe colds! Garlic also helps to Lower Bad cholestrol & helps to bring down High Blood Pressure. I bet the majority of you in here did Not know that Garlic helped protect those who around others who had the Black Plague 500 years year ago? Well it's true. These are the main resons why I always use & sprinkle Garlic in all my foods. It the bad breath thing does become a severe problem, then I suggest that you brush your teeth, & entire mouth well & then rinse with Listerine. And if/when You get ill with the Flu or bad cold, Drink Honey in Hot tea along with using Garlic to help U get over your illnesses sooner! :) - Sue -

More on garlic benefits : " This page summarises the possible health benefits often attributed to garlic. Some of these have been scientifically demonstrated, others have not and remain officially in the realm of folk medicine. Obviously the efficacy or otherwise of any of these will depend upon individual circumstances. Remember that although garlic is potentially beneficial for some people it is also very strong. Some people are intolerant of or even actively allergic to it. * Always consult your doctor regarding any health or medical matter * The medicinal properties and benefits of garlic are strongest when it is raw and crushed or very finely chopped * Don't overdo it - too much can irritate the digestive tract * Raw, crushed garlic is an anti-fungal, however it can produce skin blistering * Raw, crushed garlic is a powerful antibiotic * Cooked prepared garlic is less powerful but still reputedly of benefit to the cardiovascular system * Garlic cloves cooked whole have very little medicinal value however their milder taste makes them more acceptable to some people * There have been claims that garlic can help with cholesterol management however the research is inconclusive * If buying garlic pills, check the ingredients * Garlic should be seen a part of a healthy diet and lifestyle, not an alternative to one * Be aware of the possible problems with garlic "

I grew up in a home where very little for spices and flavorings were used. My dad wouldn't eat something if it had seasonings other than salt and pepper. I drove my mom crazy to have to cook everything so bland as she grew up in a home where it was used a lot. Needless to say, I now have a HUGE spice rack...lol. And I use plenty of garlic too. When your husband goes to work, give him some gum or breath mints, that way it won't be so noticable.

Does he work nights after the evening meal? Working days shouldn't be a problem, but if it's a night it must make for a lot of bland dinners. Have your 'big' meal at noon (if you can), then give him peanut butter sandwiches before work....lol.

Hi!My mother usually used garlic when cooking since I was a kid so defnitely I got it from her why I still use garlic in cooking. It is a usual spice we use here in Philippines. But aside from the wonders it gives me in cooking,Garlic made a big difference in my daughter's health condition. When she was still seven years old,she used to have an asthma, and she had resorted to some kind of inhaler which was of course was so costly. For a while she was so dependent with inhalers but one doctor who believes in natural alternative told me to try to take garlic everyday instead of inhaler.Gosh..it made a big difference!Asthma is gone!My daughter is fine,no costly inhalers too.

I love garlic and onions. I love them because of the health benifits. Garlic is stronger than the onions. Both in flavor and health benifits. Cant live with out them. I feel bad for people who do not like them. Its like they dont understand the benifits from them, or the flavor. They are missing so much.

Yes I like to use garlic in cooking especially the whole cloves of garlic because that makes the meal taste much better then just using like garlic salt or something like that. I usually only use garlic in italian dishes though because it doesn't always fit with other kinds of meals.
