Trying to talk to a drunk idiot about casinos is not fun...

Over the weekend we went to this bar with our cousin while we were visiting her. She was going to be going to Atlantic City the next day with another friend of hers and we were talking about it at the bar. This guy she kinda knows started in on the conversation and proceeded to tell us what they best bets were to make. Well, I'm not high-roller or anything and I don't know a lot about all the games, but the ones I do play I know quite a bit about. And lately, I've been reading up on Craps because I really enjoy it and want to know some good strategies. So this guy tells me that the only game worth playing is Blackjack because that has the best odds. Well, if you want to concentrate that hard all the time and practice a lot, then yeah, I guess that's a good game to play. I'm there to have a good time also, and counting cards is just not what I want to do. And, besides, there are some great bets on the Craps table. And you get to have a good time. So I tell him this and he says the only bets worth making in Craps are the long shots because you can make a lot of money on one roll. Dummy me tries to explain to this drunk idiot that this is the worst way to play craps because you don't get paid your full odds when you win. He was so bent on getting that 30-1 payoff when (if) his number comes up he wasn't realizing that the odds were actually 36-1 and the casino's gyp you out of some of your winnings. There are much better bets to make that in the long run will net you a much bigger winnings. I think even when this guy is sober he's a Mr. Know-it-all and would not listen to reason. After a few minutes I wised up a bit and just ignored him.

I know nothing about gambling, but I HATE when people act like that. Mr. know it alls. Was he a high roller? It'd be funny if he wasn't but kept talking like he was.

Oh, I don't think he's a high-roller, he's like in his 50's and still lives at home with his mom... He actually seemed like a bit of a loser, I'm glad I don't have to talk to him again since we were just visiting!

Still living at home in his 50s? Doesn't sound like his gambling strategies are paying off. As for the card counting in blackjack, the casinos (in Vegas, at least) have security guards who keep an eye out for card counters and won't hesitate to remove them. I received a tip long ago about using slot machines and video poker machines. I was told some casino staff will point out machines that pay out more often if you tip the people in the change booth. I won $1,500 by hitting a royal flush on a video poker machine thanks to this tip.

jtr - yeah, doesn't look like his strategies were doing too awfully well :) I have heard that the workers can be helful like that, but that sometimes they just say whatever to you so you'll leave them be. My husband will usually do good on a slot machine - once per visit though.

Hey reiny! I have no patience for people like that in the first place! First of all he was drunk. So you should have realized that you werent going to have an intelligent or slightly intellectual conversation with him in the first place. And since you realized that he was a know it all there was no point continuing or bothering with him anyway! He obviously didn't know what he wasy talking about with the game if he kept insisting that is the best way to play.

I had never met the man before, so it did take me a bit of time to realize what he was like. And as soon as I figured it out, the conversation was over - for me anyway!

Haha. Trying to talk to a drunk idiot about ANYTHING is not very fun, imo. I've never been able to wrap my mind around the game of craps.

You are SOOOO right on that count!!! I pretty much ignored him the rest of the night... Craps is actually pretty easy, and lots of fun (when you're winning). I have found that it LOOKS more intimidating than it actually is.

Actually I think craps and blackjack are pretty similar in lowest casino odds. That's if you play basic strategy for blackjack(without counting cards) and make the right bets on craps. I couldn't tell you anything about whayt the right bets are in craps. I am a fan of blackjack and is usually what I play when I go to the casino. In the end you should play what you enjoy to play. But, I have to tell you, the lowest odds you will ever face is talking to a know-it-all and trying to point out that he/she is wrong. Glad you didn't invest too much time in that endeavor.

heheheeh, you are so right! I'm glad I didn't waste too much time on it also. I've read a little bit about basic strategy and card counting, but it just seemed like more work than fun. For me, the Craps bets are kinda automatic so I can sit back and have a bit of fun without having to think too much. Of course, I'm changing my strategy there a bit so I have to "think" a bit the next time I go...
