I can cook! LOL! I was browsing a blog and make me feel hungry and miss all the Filipino food! So, I was thinking of trying one recipe there! Pancit bihon or noodles.. I was in the middle of putting all the noodles and I can see already that I am not doing the right thing, maybe I just put a lot of broth of I just soak the noodles for so long, whatever it is, I just continue but I am sad already! I wish I can cook like my Mom and my hubby! Sigh!Anyway, this is my first time cooking this recipe since I was surrounded with great cook in the family! Not an excuse I know but I will still try to cook!LOL!Are you a good cook? did you learn it from your mom, dad, hubby or by your own?

I love to cook. I was taught mostly from my Mom, mostly baking. I also took cooking in school and learned a lot from that as well. Since I enjoy cooking, I just keep doing it. I think practice can make perfect. I love experimenting with different recipes. Your food sounds delicious. To make noodles, usually in water but in broth is fine too, adding a nice taste. Bring the fluid to a boil. Then add the noodles. Stir occasionally so that the noodles don't stick to the bottom. Depending on the type of noodles, it will take about 7-9 minutes or more. Or less. Keep stirring. Just before the noodles look cooked, carefully remove one from the post and set on a dish to cool a little. Then take a piece and test it by putting in your mouth. Does it seem cooked? It is a good idea to stop cooking the noodles before they get so well done that they are falling apart. If you are going to be adding things to the broth mixture, that you have cooked the noodles in and the noodles remain in the pot the whole time, do not cook thoroughly before adding the rest of the ingredients. The reason is that if the noodles are left in the hot water, they will continue to cook. Be careful not to over cook the noodles. It is good that you have experienced cooks within your family. Your hubby being one of them because he will be able to help you out. Keep cooking, get the experience and you will get the hang of it. Soon you will be making full course meals for your whole family! Thank you for your post.

I always wished I could cook but never did .... until I found myself alone and thought to myself "my dad's a great cook, both my sisters and brother are great cooks, my ex is a great cook ...... why shouldn't I be one". So I started checking on recipes on line and buying the ingredients and started cooking accordingly. At the beginning all my dishes were "slushy" - but I ate them nonetheless because they tasted so good. Then I found this Asian Market which has all the Asian type of food and ingredients they use. I am one of their best customers now - and my cooking too has improved a lot. Sometimes I try and improvise some of the recipes I find on line by substituting some of the ingredients. what I feel mught be great for the dish to satisfy my pallet. Give it a try - you will make mistakes at the beginning - but practice makes perfect- and you might end up being the best cook in your circles.

What a frustration - to me! Because I could not cook also. Just like my hubby does. But it is okay, as he said. Because housewives are not only meant to cook for their husbands. Besides, he compensate it by doing it for us. LOL

I'm an OK cook and I learned it from my Mom and in cooking class in school. I'm not much for recipes though, just cook certain types of things from memory and that's it.

Some things are pretty easy, ie meat and potatoes and vegetables. It's when you mix things together that it gets complicated. I have no clue about Filipino food though (other than that what little I have tasted was pretty good)...

Hello checapricorn, don't give up, keep making the same soup and try different things, it will all come together. I had to learn I had no chose. When we move her to california, my mother has to work, we went to school, my brother in overseas and someone needs to clean and make dinner. I was the one who learn to cook when I was about 12. We're mexican and I made all kinds of food. My mother was he one who taugh me how to cook. I never use measuring spoons, it was always a pinch here and there. I was the one who always knew how to make different dishes. I still cook, but not like before. we go out to eat a lot.

Hi Che, hahaha we are the same. when I was in the Philippines I am not cooking a lot. My sister is the one doing the cooking most of the time. she is really good in making pancit bihon with chicken liver or chicken meat. It taste really good. But when I came here? my goodness I keep on recalling how did she do it? hahaha sometimes I emailed her but later I make my own. Now, I am a little bit master of cooking because I am putting time to it. I research on the net and every time i cook, I have the recipe at my side. I have to prepare all the ingredients and then do the cooking. It is interesting!! I love it now. We are just lazy maybe when we are yet in our country because somebody will cook for us and we will just eat,,, hahaha.. good luck,, You will be able to do it. You just need practice and experimenting anything? you will be able to do the right thing as the days go by.. Lol.

Ok Che, First of all, is your Mother still living? If so, and she is close by then I suggest that you as soon as possible get together with her and start some cooking lessons, before it's too late. If it is too lat, I'm sorry. Then you get your husband to teach you how to cook. If that's not an option, then you get out the cookbooks and start practicing. Practice makes perfect. But seriously, if you really want to learn how to cook, then do it. anyone who wants to can do it. I love to cook. My mom taught me at an early age because I wanted to learn. But cooking is something that anyone can do if they want to. So once you have started, I want you to send me your favorite recipe. OK? Good Luck!!xoxoxo leenie

I am sure you can cook and cook well, checapricorn. You just have to start somewhere. I am an okay cook although I've come up with meals that my "eaters" loved. I never imagined myself to find joy in cooking but it happened and I am sure if the interest is there then you will too. I look up recipes and read them but I also grew up to female cousins showing me how to cook but I can barely remember that as I was not into such back then.

I'm a terrible cook for one simple reason - I DON'T cook and I have the same excuse as you - there's always a good cook around so I never end up in the kitchen. However, I can follow instructions fairly well and I never messed up somebody else's recipe before. I'm also a good assistant in cooking. I guess practice is what everybody needs to be a good cook - but practicing on some people's meal does not seem to be a good motivation. Thanks for the response on my discussion!

I can cook beautiful meals...not! I hate cooking. I would rather clean toilets than cook, I mean that. It seems so much effort and then it all gets consumed in 10 minutes! Don't get me wrong I do prepare meals for my husband and daughter, but if I can avoid cooking I will. My mum is Italian and she says that she also hates cooking but still manages to produce brilliant meals. She makes everything from scratch including pasta and it all always turns out beautiful. Me on the other hand, not so talented! And I think Mum is lying when she says she hates cooking!

no, its not the same as pancit bihon, pancit canton here on philippines is an instant noodle, just boil the noodle, simmer and add the flavorings, ready to serve!(serve it while it's hot) well done! :)

you know what…I wish the same too! oh I can cook alright but its only the food that we have everyday. I wish I could cook up a variety of spreads, needn’t be expensive of gourmet type, but you know something different on some days. But I am just lousy at the effort and have wasted a lot of money on previous occasions. Just to say, I am tired of having noodles the same way everytime. So I surfed the net and hit upon noodles with peanut butter sauce…well I have peanut butter at home and honey too and I bought the chicken and other veggies and with lots of enthu I started cooking but believe me, the end result was not at all worth eating. We ate it anyhow, (never to waste food) but I was extremely disappointed with myself.

You can't cook? ;) But I thought you were a great cook. LOL! Who cooks at home then? Hubby? I am a good cook, not great, but I can turn out some delicious stuff. I learned it mostly from my mother and from the older women around me, and a lot of it from books and experimenting in the kitchen. I just love cooking. I love it all the more when someone enjoys it. :) Cheers and happy Mylotting

Hello checapricorn, I didn't cook when I was younger as I have many elder sisters and my mom is a good cook. My routine is just to watch TV when they start to cook and they will call me when the food is ready to eat! When I got married, it was hard at first. I bought all the times and after that, tried to cook simple menus with the help of instant product. I bought ready made ingredients for noodles, fried rice, and all kind of dishes I got tired at the end (not my husband though...) and so I started to learn how to cook by myself. My eldest sister is my guide. Well! Now I can be proud of my cooking skill..I am not shy about it anymore!

I know how you feel. I've had my fair share in cooking disasters. Actually my mom is a great cook and I somewhat learned from her. I always ask her how to cook this and that until finally I get it right. Now-a-days I usually resort to looking online for a good recipe and try it out. It doesn't go well all the time, but at least I did try. Plus, my family is thankful at least they can taste something different each time. So, why don't you ask help from your hubby? I mean, a few tricks could go so long. Plus, don't quit. Everyone becomes a bad cook first before they become the best cook ever! Enjoy what you do. Happy cooking!

I always looked at my husband whenever he is cooking but I do know, it will just fly(the idea)....Maybe I have to put my heart on it! NOw that I found this wonderful blog, I will be trying again all their food! I hope in the future, I can make it! Thanks for dropping![/i]

I suppose i am a good cook, though I really dont make anything out of the ordinary.a friend taught me how to make pothalios and if you dont have the disc to make them, you must make your own from dough. The spansih store is to far away so i always make my own when i make them.to messy so thats veary often. I make things like enchiladas, and lasagna spagettie with chorizo sausage, stuff like that... I have never made anything from scratch, somtimes i think about it but then i never do so as far as really being a cook. I dont know.

I am a pretty good cook, my mum used to show me how to cook and my grandparents. I then started cooking my own stuff when I left home and was always in the kitchen making my own recipes up and that. I do not have much time these days to get in the kitchen as much as I would like too but I do occasionally make something of my own up.
