Do you have a serious food allergy?

I have a few food-related allergies, mushrooms, eggs, and cow's milk, but none of them is serious. If that were all I ate, I suppose I'd be in asthmatic trouble. But the worst is stuffiness, and that's livable. How about you? Are you allergic to peanuts? Fish? Know someone who is? How serious is the allergy and what needs to be done to safeguard the person from consuming the food allergens?

The only food allergy I have is to mushrooms, but it's not a life-threatening one. I just get horrible headaches from eating mushrooms, so I've learned to avoid them. I never had a problem in them until I was about 30, but then developed the sensitivity. Fortunately, mushrooms aren't terribly hard to live without (at least it's not chocolate!!). :O)

That makes sense. My son and I both tend to feel funky (headaches and such) when we are in musty environments.

Funny...yes, at least it's not chocolate. They say that mushrooms are fungi, in the same class as molds -- so if you have any household mold or mildew allergies, it figures that you could be allergic to mushrooms. What do you think?

I have an allergy, and the only reason it is serious it that it is to chocolate!

Oh no! Allergic to chocolate? That is such a crying shame.

I don't really have what you would call an allergy, but if I eat more than a small piece of hard cheese, I break out in a sweat. It doesn't hurt me, but I do wonder what causes it. My husband sometimes has a light asthmatic attack after eating things with oatmeal in them.

My daughter used to be allergic to oatmeal, but she outgrew it. I wonder about the cheese. Could the sweats be due to estrogen hormones loaded in the milk products from dairy practices?

I am fortunate enough to be able to eat whatever I want. However I have few friends that are allergic to some food. One of them can't (or should I say shouldn't)eat citrus fruits like oranges or tangerines because of the itch she get's after taht. But she doesn't care. She says she can suffer a little for her pleasures. My other friend is allergic to cow's milk but she knows it sinse she was a baby so she's accustomed to it. She drinks soy milk instead which is horrible in my opinion. So I guess it's a good idea to find a substitude food whenever it's possible;)

Soymilk isn't too bad, if you get the right brand. I drink WestSoy unsweetened vanilla flavored soymilk. Everything else I've ever tried, turned me off quickly. The unsweetened has only 1 net carb, and for a diabetic, that's a good thing.
