Is it right to call hockey as the national game.?But the fact is that it cant be called a national game as it doesnt have half the popularity as that of cricket. Becuse if we rewind to last year it was cricket that grabbed the healines of newspapers most days than any other game. Even newspapers are forced to include cricket news in tham as it has charisma to attractindian audience. We have seen the love of public for cricket in the IPL . Stadiums filled minutes after the tickets were sold. All this shows that cricket is infact a religion in India. Hence it is high time to replace hockey with cricket as the national game.

When we think of national game we should consider about the pride that is generated in the people if the national team wins certain matches. I do agree that hockey is loosing and cricket is gaining. Also both the games have a colonial origin. So no need of any emotional attachement to anyone. Cricket is becomming one of things with which India is being identified now. It is gaining popularity with the 20-20 matches. But Hockey is loosing ground in the international stage. I think the government should make a rethink.

i think hockey should not be called the national game because it looks very funny when we say our national game is hockey and we dont even qualify for the olympics. and more over we dont seem to do well in any other team sport
