Why do so many people like Family Guy?

The cartoon is poorly drawn, and none of the characters are really likable. Pretty much everybody on that show is obnoxious. The jokes are random and crude, and saturated with 1034354 references, and the show doesn't contain even half of the wit and intelligence that The Simpsons does. Yet, so many people are crazy about the show. I just don't get it.

It's hilarious. Yes they are all obnoxious. It is what makes it funny.

That's what my friend told me too, but that just doesn't do anything for me. Does part of the humor derive from a feeling a smug superiority over these characters?

No. I think it s more we can identify with their silliness. They either do things that we have done or thought about doing or do things that other people do.

Thing is, I don't see them as silly as much as I see them as quite mean spirited.

Hi there friend. In my opinion this show is just a lesser version of South Park in the sense that it's not even that funny at least. I agree that is very poorly drawn but if you watch cartoon network for example you will notice that most cartoons nowadays are just bad. I prefer the Disney cartoons, and the more classical productions of the other studios like Tom and Jerry from MGM and Looney Toons (with Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and all the others included here) by Warner Brothers.

Here here! That's true what you say about the quality of cartoons declining nowadays (ATHF, anyone?) It is as if nobody truly puts any effort into them.
