There are people who are afraid of growing old - of being weak, of being wrinkly, of being forgetful. Are you one of them?

I've thought about growing old a lot. I'm not afraid of becoming wrinkled. What I am afraid of is becoming a burden to the people who will take care of me if ever I become weak, grumpy, and difficult. I don't want to become a burden to the people around me when I am old. I am also afraid of coming down with a bad disease like cancer or something like that. I can't imagine the pain of going through something like that, whether old or not.

I'm mostly afraid of becoming grumpy. I know that I don't deal well with people now when I'm sick, I'll be worse when I grow older and when the pain doesn't go away as fast.

Yes and no. Growing old is not something that I worry about normally, until someone brings it up :) Seriously though, I'm not afraid of being wrinkly - that part I can deal with. I'm not necessarily afraid of normal forgetfulness either - although several older members of my husband's family have Alzheimer's disease and that kind of scares me. It's really depressing sometimes to see the heartbreak on people's faces when their loved ones don't even recognize them. I don't think about this very often, but when I do, I try to make a commitment to myself that if this disease should strike my husband, that I will try to be strong for my children and help them understand. The other thing about growing old that worries me is being lonely. Living without my husband seems like a very lonely prospect. At the same time though, I wouldn't want him to have to live without me either, so I'm not necessarily hoping to go first. On a brighter note, something I'm looking forward to as I grow older is seeing what my children do with their lives and watching them grow and make places for themselves in the world. They are young now but time goes by so fast and I know I'll enjoy watching them change as time goes by. Great question!

I'm in my late 40's, so growing old is no longer something that happens to others!! My kids tease me all the time about the extra pounds that creep on or when I forget where I put my cell phone. But I think that by taking care of ourselves old age is something that can be enjoyed!! Have you seen Mama Mia with Merly Streep, she was in her late 50's when that movie was made (she turns 60 this year) but the charcacter she was playing was dancing and laughing and having fun, she was so full of life, I hope that as I age I can have that kind of zest for life. I have a good friend who will be 54 this year, she is also very healthy and at her age she is learning two languages (Japanese and Korean), she does yoga, eats healthy and has such a positive out look on life, even though she was widowed 11 years ago, she has built up her own business and raised her daughter by herself. These two ladies, one fictional and one real inspire me and show me how to grow old with grace, something I hope to do. So yes old age is fearful but it is something that happens and we really have no choice, do we? Jacks

Hello oyenkai! Well, honestly, I do afraid of going old. I just wonder what would happen or how do I look like if I reach the old age stage. I just want to have children who will take care of me and my husband.

it's a little disappointing that you didn't think it's worthy of being discussed though :)
