How often do you defrag your system? Well, i heard that defrag-ting too often will harm one's system. So i only do so when i feel my computer is getting slow. But before that, i'd do a through scan before i defrag. What about you?

If you always use your PC creating and moving files, uploading and removing programs, then you need defragment more often. Actually, you don't need to set a time frequency for defragmentation. If you notice, the Disk Defragment has "Analyze" function. Just let the the defragmenter analyze your program. After analysis, it will tell you if you need to defragment or not.

Good question. I defrag about every two months. I find if I am not moving files around much, editing a bunch or using my photo program to edit and delete stuff, I am doing alright for a longer time length between the times that I do defrag. It is a good thing to do regularly. Especially, like you said when you computer is seemingly getting slow. I have never heard that too much defragging isn't good for your computer but I can see how that could happen. Thank you for this discussion.

When you copy, cur paste or moves files from one location to another location, there are placed in a location where the continuous disk space is available, that is why bad sectors are created. So there is no specific frequency with which de-fragmentation should run. I normally run de-fragmentation whenever i feel my computer has slowed. Secondly , when you run the de-fragmentaion utility it first scans or analyses your disk and then run the actual de-fragmentation. So here you can stop the defragmentation if you find that there are no much bad sectors.

I try to remember to do it every couple of weeks or so, or every time that I do a scan for viruses and other junk that may be on the computer I have no idea why it would harm a computer, all it does is move files around and delete bits and pieces of files that are no longer there.

I read on PCWorld that it is advisable to do it once a month or, at least, once every 2 months.

I never defrag my hard disk since I install my operating system (Win XP). I have three 320GB hard disk so it will consume a lot of time to defrag it. Beside that I don't have to defrag my Linux OS.

I defrag my drive only 1 times, and i never defrag my drive again since i have problem with a virus. Do not use every time because your drive will be damage if always do it. We must do check virus in the drive before we defragmentation our hard disk.

i defrag my drive about 2-3 times a year. probably i need to do it more times. doing defrag very frequently is also not good for the drive becasue defrag process cuts and pastes thousand of files from drive, which in turn slightyl degrades the drive's quality.
