Judging People

January 28, 2009 2:04pm CST
I was just wondering, how many of you judge others on the basis of their religion. I try not to judge any one but sometimes I just do. What about you? Do you guys judge others too or are you guys angels(unlike me)?

I prefer to NOT know peoples' religion I dont want to even be tempted to judge them based on that I dont go around publicly announcing my religion simply because I dont want to be judged I have the standard military rule when it comes to religion Dont ask - Dont tell!

As a born again Christian I feel I MUST let people know. My "religion" is actually no religion at all. It is a relationship with a real live Person Who has COMMISSIONED me to make Him known to as many people as I can. I DARE not use the "don't ask don't tell" policy. A very REAL event is coming on the world. A real Man named Jesus Christ is returning to Earth to claim those who are His own. I am striving to make it into that number. This is not a religion or a fairy tale. It is an actual, historical event, as real as the election of Barack Obama to the White House. And the whole world will be affected by this Man's judgement of their lives. Man is going to spend Eternity in either of two places, both being as real as the library I am writing from right now. There is one Who has said, "You must eat my flesh and drink my blood to have any part with me." There is no salvation without the Blood. I don't judge people based on their religion. You know, part of me wishes that religion were a personal, private matter, and that all was well with the choices people made. But I can't. It's just not reality. To do so would be to lie. It's like having the cure for cancer, or HIV, and not telling it to anybody out of fear that people will find your cure distasteful, and you don't want to give them something that will offend their taste buds, even though it will save their lives. That, of course, would be unconscionable. I must, then, through my verbal words, and through my posts, make known the words of Jesus.

I really like your military rule. Thats is the best way out of it but sometimes, I don't know why, people just tell you their religion. And most of the times it not even in the context of the conversation that is going on. Anyways thanks for your response and Happy Mylotting.

I would say no I don't do that but then I gave it some thought and maybe i do, people that are in very closed religions, the ones that say we are right and everyone else isn't even human offend me, I can't say that it is the religion as much as the people it attracts..

That too is a very important thing, our feelings for the person. But in that case we have to know the person first, for example that you don't know a person and you find out that he is from a different religion, there is a lot of chance that you might not like being with that person.

If i know people and like them, then find out they are very closed about religion or color, or race I usually don't get any closer. except my husband who is very closed minded, I really slipped up there, but most of the time we get along, there are just a lot of things we don't talk about. But I know him to be a very good person under all that prejudice.

Ha ha I just had to laugh at that last part first off...it actually kind of made me think about what would happen if someone was an angel but that person didn't know it! I may have to make a discussion on that thanks! Anyway, I don't judge people on their religion mostly because you don't know who they truly are. Knowing they are a Muslim, or a Christian, only says so much.

Hopefully I don't judge anyone, although we all probably have some biases that creep in. When I am dealing one-on-one with a person, it is much easier to see them as just that - a person. And I try to keep in mind certain things to be considerate of people. For example, if I am arranging a pot luck for a group of graduating new hires, I ALWAYS ask if we need to make sure to have some options that are pork free, because of some people's religious observations. (I also ask allergy questions too, regarding food.) I know enough about SOME things when people make an allusion to difficulties approaching such and such person at their house of worship about signing paperwork for a religious accommodation for their work schedule, I can sometimes point them in the right direction using the right terminology. A lot of times people seem surprised when I do that in just a very straight-forward, non-nosey, non-judgemental way, and seem to appreciate it.

I try not to since I'm of one of the "other" religions. But honestly, there are times when I get frustrated with one type of religion follower who likes to push their faith in my ear. I tend to bristle a bit when they start. I am finding more and more that tolerance is growing.... in many areas including religion.

I always let people know I am a Jew. That's my reaction to all the anti-Semitism thru the centuries. I do judge people for not knowing anything about Judaism and yet they still have religions that are based in it. I've somewhat decided that if the Xtians proselytize, I can at least teach people about my religion. Which I am enjoying doing here on MyLot and on my cancer carepage. Jews have mostly in the past been quiet and kept to themselves and tried to hide and look like everyone else to avoid being murdered. Jews aren't interested at all in converting everyone to Judaism. You are Jewish because you are born into a race. You can't convert easily out of or into Judaism. All we care about is that everyone follow the 7 Noahide Laws. So in Judaism, the teaching is that you should only judge people on their actions - not on their beliefs. There is no one belief that makes you Jewish - you are judged by your actions.

If you are being open with your religious beliefs (or lack of), then you are blatantly asking to be judged. I try not to be an idiot and just condense every person, based on religion, to a level of sheepish stupidity; however I will admit I am biased and sometimes these stereotypes come into my mind. I try to be accepting of all people and beliefs, but can really only do so when my own beliefs are not condemned (and usually they are not, at least in a public setting). The bottom line for me is that it is okay to be biased, and okay to judge people; however we need to draw a line in the sand so we can still befriend people we don't necessarily agree with. There are alot of decent people who believe things completely opposite of myself, and I try to give the benefit of the doubt. Though, as I said, it is difficult sometimes.
