Do You Love To Read While Lying On Your Bed?

Philippines

I always have this habit of reading while lying down not only on that bedroom bed but, even in the sofa at the living room. Newspapers, novels, comic books, anything that i can hold on to, that strikes my interest will most likely be read while i am lying down, resting (so to say). How about you, do have this same habit of mine? Some doctors will tell us that it is not good for our eyes to be doing this. Do you agree?

Hi trinidadvelasco! I usually start reading while I am seated whether on the sofa or on bed..and while I get to read longer, I tend to stretch my legs.,and after awhile, I am already lying down while reading. lol.. I am not sure if reading while lying down is bad for the eyes..all I know is that the kind of light that you use while reading can affect the eyes. Take care and have a great day! lovelots..faith

hi, faith, good to see around. it is really relaxing to be reading in our most comfortable positions. as for the eyes getting strained much faster than when being seated right, the eye doctor told me this when i was still very young (13 years old). maybe, they no longer believe in this anymore.

Hi friend! Good to see you around too! haha..We can never be so sure, maybe it still holds true until to this day with what your doctor said and it is just not being discussed by doctors now. I think we should do a research on that, after it is for our own good. Thanks for sharing that. take care and blessings to you my friend. lovelots..faith

Yes, I love to read while lying in bed. I find it very relaxing and pleasing activity. I like reading while traveling also.

Personally I have always loved to read tucked underneath the blankets. For me it always made it more enjoyable and I usually find myself able to get into and enjoy the book more as well. I guess it is because you usually have peace and quiet and since that is where you sleep, reading in bed gives you more of a chance to relax and imagine you are there with the person writing the story as well.

this is also how i feel about the experience of reading while in bed. it is very comfortable. besides, if i fall asleep in the process, so much the better.

yes i do that but it is bad for eye sight... and after a while i would feel sleepy and dozz off..hehehe yeap it really isn't good for our eyes, because of the angle of reading and also less light on the book.. yeap it is a bad habit

perhaps we keep on doing this despite knowing that it is a bad habit, lovesummer, because it is very comfortable. then, we just fall asleep unknowingly in the process. hmmmm...have a good restful sleep, my friend.

I always do. Before I go to sleep I always find time to read. I do lie down because I’m too tired from work but it’s really a habit of mine too – lying while reading. I feel comfortable and I am not that distracted if I’m lying actually.

this is indeed the best reading position if you are already tired from work. relaxing and taking it easy...reading.

Yes!I too love to read anything by lying down in bed.It is some what relaxing to read in that way.But sure,it is not a good habit to follow and the doctors are right that it harms our eyes.We shall look for good lighting, that is the light should come from your left and the book should be some 1 foot distance from the eyes.At least we should follow this.Cheers!

srganesh, it is very difficult to observe those measures if i am lying in my bed while reading. well then, the doctors must have their good reasons to be advising their patients to avoid reading while in bed lying and trying to catch some sleep.

I enjoy it too, reading in bed, either lying down or sitting up in bed. I've read on the couch a few times but the tv has to be off and it has to be quiet enough for me to concentrate on what I'm reading. I had not realised that lying on the bed can cause problems for our eyes. I would think it had something to do with the lightening moreso than lying down reading, probably.

i have realized, too, as i am reading through the responses, that it must be the lighting, which is inadequate, that causes the eyestrain.

No friend, with the changing routine and pattern of life i have almos stopped reading, even the newspaper i read only becoz there is power cut in the morning and i can't start my computers so there is no option, i am kind of addicted to sit on computers even if i get 2 minutes to sit here...naturally adding all the time taken to start the computers and its booting etc......my routine is almost fixed from morning to 1 or 1.30pm no time, all cooking, sending children to school etc. Then in afternnon i sit for sometime on computers and again their studies , homework etc. So what i read is their course books.....while resting i only rest.

I usually read when I am "sitting" on my bed but I couldn't read when I am lying there. I usually sit up straight and hold a book to read until I am really tired and decide to go to sleep. It's more relaxing for me this way.

If I am reading a book I prefer to curl up on the couch and read. If I am lying in my bed I will get really sleepy or I just get uncomfortable after a long period of time.

hey, you really read so fast, wraithhime. i can only read a book within a day if it is the thin one. as for those thick novels, it takes me weeks.

I don't neccessarily agree that it will hurt your eyes. I don't read alot, but when I do I like to read in bed, or laying down. It tends to make me more relaxed and then it's easier to fall asleep.

if the act of reading lulls us to sleep then, i believe that it is now contrary to be hurting the eyes, wallfranklin.

Hi trinidadvelasco, Sure I love to do that. How else can I position myself to read lol? Lying on my bed to read is what I normally do. However, I will switch position every now and then though. Not sure about the eyes part...

i am happy to see you around, lordwarwizard. so, you are still mylotting... yes, those turns usually take place while reading. making adjustments in one's position, trying to find the most comfortable one.

I've tried but it's not my hobby. I read pocketbooks when I was teen and some books that interests me. About science, history, and a few love stories. It helps me in sleeping though. As of now, well I rarely do it. Maybe if I'm bored or got nothing to do or my piece of resting or relaxing..

Usually books/novels are the only thing that I read while lying in bed. I think it's the fact that I know that I will be there and involved with it for a considerably longer period of time than if I were just reading a newpaper or magazine, so i want to be somewhere I can be comfortable. A newspaper, magazine or antything that i might just browse, sitting at a table, or just on the couch is good enough. There's one more vital reason I like to read books in bed. Usually after reading for a while I get quite sleepy. So being in bed saves me from having to relocate to take a nap.

i get your point, uicbear. our therapist has also advised us to be by the bed when doing things which does need much motion to achieve. once one feels sleepy, he/she must immiediately seize the opportunity.

I like to read in my bed before i got to sleep, but sometimes i fall asleep midpage and i end up sleeping ON the book (yikes). Now adays i read while lying down on the couch cuz at least i know i will wake up to go to bed should i go to sleep. It's one of those learned comforts of life and the ideal image for a home (curled up on the couch reading a book under lamplight...yah, ideal image).
