Smoking and weight

Hello mylot loves! I was just wondering what smoking has to do with weight? I'm overweight and hate it. I'm really depressed about my weight and really need to loose it! When my dad quit smoking he gained around 50 lbs. He used to be fit, looked young, and was a very handsome man. When he quit he turned into an old geezer. I love him but even he agrees that this statement is true. I'm terrified of gaining even more weight! If I were to gain any more I would go crazy. But I know that I HAVE TO quit smoking as soon as possible. The unfortunate part is I'm a heavy smoker so exercise is extremely difficult. I also have asthma (which is my biggest motivator to quit). I've always had severe asthma so any form of exercise would kick me in the butt (which is why I got so big). So first of all I was wondering why people gain weight when they quit smoking. Secondly, is there any way to prevent this? I know the obvious diet and exercise, but I can't exert myself. I've been in the hospital several times a year as a kid because of asthma. Once the doctor told me that if I had waited a few more hours I would have dropped dead. It was very scary. (Yeah, smoking probably wasn't my best option to begin with. lol) So of-course I'm afraid to exercise. Thanks mylotters, any suggestion is welcome!

I feel so sorry to hear your situation :-( I'm sure quitting smoking is difficult... Here's some suggestions, try always get yourself occupied like feeling always have something to do then you might think less about it. When you want to smoke, maybe you can try to chew gum? I've heard people said when you want to smoke, go brush teeth, expecially brushing your tongue. Can you do some mild exercises like walking? Don't hang around people who smoke or go to some "smoking places". Ihope these little advices help you :-) Hope you can quit smoking as soon as possible! God bless you! :-)

you already know you should not smoke .. are there support groups in your area .. check it out that could be a good start for you .. I dont think everyone puts on weight as your dad did .. go for a good healthy eating option and take up a good sport or interest .. the first couple of days not smoking are the worst after that you are mostly dealing with just the habit not so much of the craving ..start eating fruit and /or nuts when you feel like smoking .. have you tried any herbal remedies .. calms for helping you relax might help for that first week .. you would help your asthma so much if you could stop .. the most helpfull thing is that you really want to stop .. let me know how you get on ... GOODLUCK*

People gain weight when they quit smoking because not only do they have an addiction to the smokes they have an addiction to the act as well and eating is the thing that most closely resembles smoking. Hand to mouth hand to mouth hand to mouth. I quit smoking a year ago and I only gained 30 or so pounds. I made sure I had healthy snacks, carrots, celery, and ranch dressing. That way when I wanted to eat (smoke) I would eat a carrot stick with ranch. It made me feel better and it satisfied my addiction to the act of smoking. I also took a regualr bic pen and took it apart and cut the white plastic part down to the size of a smoke and carried that with me where ever I went that way even if I didnt have a carrot stick to eat I was still able to deall with the maddening desire to smoke. I find that even now I still find my self doing the hand to mouth thing. I have also taken up cross stitching it seems to help the cravings. Well those are all my ideas that I quit smoking with. Oh yea one other thing is suckers. Suckers work great as well.

hi metalette. first of all. you have to feel good about yourself. yeah you're overweight as u said but smoking is not a best option for losing excess fat. believe me, im going through the same thing. but i became underweight cause of smoking. and im regretting it day by day. people will gain their weight when they quit smoking for the fact that your body is healthier , no longer receiving intoxicating chemicals that hinders the nutrients from transporting it to the organs of your body. with looking older when you quit smoking? i dont get it. cause when i quit smoking that was before, now im still smoking.. i look my best. i was looking great as ever. so maybe your dad isnt getting any younger. lol// was just joking. well.. my advice is for you to reduce your protein intake like meat, beef, rice, past, pizzas. just limit the intake, its not right to deprive ourselves from the things we like. i now realize that. cos i used to starve diet and its not good. it made me look malnourish. and with the exercise? jogging in the morning is the best for you. where there's less pollution. 30 mins of brisk walking. you dont need to go through strenous activity. you know i used to work out at least 2x a day. 7 days a week. can u imagine, i was so crazy!!! damn!! i lost all my fats. not good. and one more thing. never, ever try to look at those celebs who go through weird and crazy thing to lose their weight. its not helpful. you should do what fits for your body condition. media is one of the reasons y i became so concious about my body. again i regret it. and im now trying to put back what i've lost. hope i gave you some motivational advice. good luck to u

When you quit smoking your metabolism slows down. Would it be possible for you to go on a diet before quitting? Can you walk for exercise? I quit smoking for 30 days and I gained about 10 pounds. I figured before I quit again I would lose weight so the gain wouldn't be that bad. So now I have lost 20 pounds from walking and eating yogurt so I am planning to quit smoking soon. So if I gain that 10 pounds back it wont be such a big deal.

I was smoking for 24 years and quit last April. I haven't gained any weight because I'm not smoking. It is true though people gain weight because they don't know what else to do if they don't smoke so they starting to eat. The soonest I quit I also watched what I ate. I started eating more Fruits and Veggies. Every time I wanted to eat something I got some healthy snack. It's not easy but you can do it.

The weight gain not only coms from force of habit but also due to the fact that nicotine is an appetite suppresant. Check with your Dr. They have so many options and ways to quit now. Maybe the nicotine patch would be a good option for you. Also as far as the habit of hand to mouth goes, take a straw and tweezers and stuff it with cotton and smoke til your hearts content! LOL You'll get some strange looks but that's ok. At least you are trying to improve your health. Good Luck!

I think all the smokers are very lazy thats why they all smoke to avoid there sleep and we all know that more sleeping is one of the reasons for increaing weight.
