Student Loans

Can anyone give me some information about student loans? I took out a student loan over 25 years ago. I was unable to pay on it due to personal reasons which I won't go into, but about 4-5 years ago they caught up with me. They sent me countless letters and made countless phone calls to me and then just kind of stopped except for an occasional letter. They have never garnished my wages, although they have had the opportunity to do so. Now I am sure they will take my tax return and I am prepared for that, but just wondered what experience others have had with them.

I've been paying on a student loan for years, and it really wasn't that much to start with. If I recall right, it does seem like to gov. will work with you if you are having a hard time paying the loan back.

It seems like these things are never ending. Mine was originally about $2,000 and now its like $7,000. I wish I had the kind of money that would pay it off. Although if they take my taxes it should pay most of it. Maybe it will get rid of it for good.

yea, I'm like you I wish I had the money to pay it all off at one time just paying the min. amount each month doesn't take very much off. It's about like how my credit card is, this month the amount went up instead of down and I haven't put anything else on it.

I am in Canada, in quebec, each province governs student loans differently, I am not working so they cannot touch me for the student loans, as loan as I am not working I am safe, if I work again they will demand repayment, but I don't that I will every work again.

I don't think they care here whether you are working or not. As I said to someone else, my loan is over 25 years old and they are still hounding me.

I also had a student loan, which I took out in 1988 I believe, because of a divorce which caused me to have to move from one state to the other, the place where I started refused to transfer the loan to where I now wanted to go to school. Shortly afterwards, the school closed. I have never hid from them, but I am not disabled and they sent me a form, with 2 week return date on it. To take to my doctor. She did not get it back to them until a few days after the 2 week return date, she said she wrote to them that because she is so busy she could not get it completed as fast as they wanted. They turned the form down said she would do it within their time period. Now I thought this was pretty stupid on their part. They sent me another form and I took it to her and had her fill it out while I was in the office, returned it to them so that they had it on time. They turned it down because she did not go into complete detail as to why I was disabled. I THEn returned to them a copy of the judges determination that he declaired me disabled and the date, they refused it. Said that was only a matter of opinion. Don't care what they call it his determination gave me my disability pay. So I returned to them a copy of our housing documents showing that I am disabled which entitles me to HUD housing, they said that does not count. Now they have 3 legal documents showing I am disabled. And all have be turned down by them. So I told them this is the way it is dont' bother me again because I will not answer any phone calls or any letters from them. My doctor said they wanted information that she is not allow to put on a piece of paper and refused to do it. That the form ask if she believes that I am unable to work and if she thinks that I am disabled and that is what she wrote on there because of my heart attack I am not able to work and they said they wanted more. It appears to me that this is just another way to not cancel the loan. I told them it really has nothng to do with my disability the school closed and they then wanted names of the school. It has been how many years 20 I don't even remember the name of the shool. I told them you paid them, you should have the name of who they gave the money too and their reply was yes but it is my place to tell them. All bull crap as I see it. As far as I'm concerned it is over with. They have more than enough information to cancel the loan.

Really sounds like you've been through it behind this loan. I hate those things. They just go on and on and on. I mean this was over 25 years ago. I am almost glad to pay it off through my taxes. I'm tired of dealing with it.
