Why did a woman purposefully have eight babies?

I'm sure everyone saw the item in the news where the woman in California had eight babies. I'm all for people having kids, if they can afford them, but what in the world was she thinking??? If it was to call attention to herself for monetary gain, then shame on her. She already has six children, and she's living with her parents. I heard she was working in a fertility clinic, yet she's collecting Social Security. Who gave her free fertility treatments? Whoever the doctor was, he or she sure isn't ethical in my estimation. I hope the Department of welfare looks into this, if only to make sure these babies are going to be taken care of properly. People living in California should be outraged, because the money's coming out of their pockets. As it is, California is strapped for cash, anyway.

I've seen several versions of this story and it seems that even the news articles vary on the facts. I've seen articles that say she's single and one that said her husband was serving in Iraq. I've seen some that say they only implanted a few eggs and they split and some that say they implanted more than what's allowed. I've seen some articles that say she's unemployed, some say she works for the fertility company and some that say she has college degrees. Some say the family is broke and others say they have millions. I remember when the octoplets were born and the family asked for privacy...perhaps since they can't get the real story the reporters are making things up. The article that so far seems to mesh with the others claims the family owns 2 other properties, has around a million dollars and is from Iraq. Now in a way, that makes sense. No sane doctor would implant a single, unemployed mother of six but...the doctor may have done it if he knew that the family was helping her raise the children and had money to care for them...that, at least to me, seems more plausable. Personally, and I know ppl don't want to hear this, I put a good amount of blame on the parents. They've let her live at home and continue to have kid after kid after kid with no consequence. Perhaps if they'd put their foot down after number 2 or 3 this woman might have had to get out on her own and start finding out just how hard it is to raise kids...which may have made her think twice about having more. I mean, seriously, how many of the parents here are going to let their child live at home and just keep popping out one kid after another? As for her selling her story, that's a standard conclusion. Anytime anything news worthy happens the first thing that happens is ppl start wanting the story. The more outrageous the news, the more ppl will pay for the story. Everyone is trying to make money, including the producers and publishers. I think she should sell her story, at least it would help financially with raising these kids. Also I think the parents should get off their butts, sell their extra two houses and help with raising the kids since they are in a way just as responsibe. On a side note, it does seem strange to me that the parents have been helping with the first six, apparently with no problem and it's only now that she has eight more that they suddenly want to put her out. What I mean is if she's living at home and her parents have money and own homes, she doesn't qualify for any state aid but if her parents suddenly put her out she'd qualify for every state benefit you could shake a stick at. Just sounds hinky to me. ~~AT PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG AND TRUST IN GOD**

This woman has a serious problem. Why would you want more kids if your single, jobless, and staying with your parents. Why did the fertility clinic give her fertility if they knew she already had 6 kids. There is something fishy with this story and I'm sure there is money under the table. In the newspaper it says that her mother is fed up with her having all these kids and she said when she gets home she will put her out. I feel sorry for those kids and I hope the state looks further into this.

Me, too. It's the kids that are going to suffer. She could probably care less, she wants her fifteen minutes of fame.

i still think she's mental, no sane person would do that. she's just going to exploit thos babies everywhere & everyway she can, i hope someone steps in & see that those babies are taken care of & not used as a side show.

Actually its not a mental problem. Its like what fortunate said, an act to get some attention from the public. I don't what is she doing to feed herself and her family, but even if she is doing something, its not possible to take care of 14 childrens at atime. So I think Dept of welfare should take a look into this matter and take some necessary actions. And those who are supporting this act should also get punished.

Some people just do not care and they don't look at the full story. They want what they want and that is all they care about. Very one minded. So, that many kids is just going to be a problem for everyone else, not her. Alot of people are that way.

I don't understand what was going through this woman's head. Sounds like she cant even take care of herself if shes still living at home with her parents. How is she going to take care of all these children? She will not be able to do it if shes not working that's for sure. I couldn't even imagine having 14 children to take care of thats going way overboard. I think there is something wrong with these people that must have that many children. Almost like those people that hoard cats and dogs. Do you know what I mean?

I can understand wanting children - We really want a child. I just don't quite grasp having 8. Especially as she already had 6. If she can afford them, that's great, but it doesn't change the fact that each child needs time and attention.

Not just crazy...INSANE! I was amazed when I heard she had 6 small children at home. And then we find out she is single? What in the world was she thinking? Oh yeah, her dad says she is loves children. Well she had 6 already, I think that is more than enough for a single lady to handle. I heard she has a set of twins. Being the mother of a set of twins and one more, I can tell you she doesn't have her head on correctly. The welfare thing is new to me. I hadn't heard that yet. I haven't heard the news in the last day or so. But I think that is totally wrong. The only thing welfare should do for her is sterilize her. That should have been done after the first birth if she was single and on welfare. What do these people expect? Taxpayers to give, give and give? Enough ranting from me. I'm so sick of the broken system here. Makes me want to move to a deserted island.

Who know why she did it, probably by having six children collecting social security is different from having 14 children, she sure know the trick well living in USA since our system is so easy to abuse. California has no choice except to take over the million dollars medical bill and child support very soon.

I don't think that she was thinking, I believe that she only intended to do this for the attention but I don't think that she was thinking about the negative attention that she would be getting as well. Firstly I think that if she is working she shouldn't be able to collect Social Security, especially after purposly getting pregnant again. I think that there are some people that are currently looking into this situation, I hope that everything works out, especially for the children.

Yes, we in California, I live near L.A. for those who did not know, and we are strapped for cash. This woman was out of her damn mind. Granted that it was a miracle that all eight lived, and she survived, she was still out of her mind to do something like this. Honestly, what woman in her right mind would do this? Anyway, I heard the woman has revealed herself, and she does have a publicist because everyone wants a story about how on Earth she carried and gave birth to eight healthy children.

Fortunata, I feel that as long as there is a Social Security or similar scheme available and laxity on the screening and control there will be bound to be abusers like her. There are just so many of these getting away very well off and Scott free so what is there to stop them in first place. If she does not come up with this idea, sooner or later there will just be another along the road. I feel that there should be more control and monitoring from the authorities especially for those who are of legal age and capable to work. There should be another department to put them back to work and up on their feet. Welfare that goes out of control is no different to parents spoiling their own children. It will just get worst and before you know it, you will find that soon no one will be willing and motivated to work. Cheers and have a nice day.

It wouldn't surprise me if she is banking on getting her own 'John & Kate plus 8' style reality show and all the fame and fortune that comes along with it. If that's the case I think it's sick and wrong. If you already have SIX children then you should not be a candidate for fertility treatments PERIOD. And if you have six children and are also single and living with your parents then how could a doctor even be willing to perform the treatments? There are so many people who can't/don't have ANY children and can't afford to undergo these treatments and this woman can? Sick!

Unemployed. Living with cash strapped parents. Mother (childrens grandmother)relocating as we speak. 6 children under the age of 7, prior to the birth of the 8. All the children were envitro. I think that in her convaluted mind she is expecting a reality show from all of this, as opposed to a visit from CFS, which I am sure is on the horizon. Or she suffers from a psycological malady that I would have thought would have been noted when they did all the exams BEFORE implanting 14 embryo's. Hmmmm.....did they do the mandated psychologicals on her?????
