Do you use a debit card for daily business or household expenses?

I use the Green dot debit card for small household and business expenses. I reload my card once a month at their online website. Unlike a credit card, they don't charge me interest rates. And, I don't mind the small card fee. They're very easy to use. I have a bank debit card, but rarely use it, mostly cause I'm concerned about overdraft fees and bounced checks. It's so easy to go over the limit with a card. Do you ever use debit cards for your daily expenses?

I use my bank debit card for my business and household expenses mostly, I send out checks through the mail too when paying bills. I have been looking for a debit card like the one you say you use. I would like to know more about your Green Dot Debit Card if you don't mind. How do I get one?

If you're in the US, they sell them at the Walgreens and Walmart stores for less than ten dollars. Then you refill the card as needed with your own money. There is a small $5.00 fee monthly, but it's better than paying interest rates on a credit card. Best of luck!

I just remembered that you can buy a Green Dot debit card online, too. Here is the link: https://www.greendotonline.com/AcctMgmt/Content/Common/CardRequest/GetACard.aspx Hope that info helps.

Yes, I never have cash on me. I use my debit card and I do not even use checks and I pay for everything online.

No, I don't have a debit card. I really think for my particular needs and my routine, it would be better for me not to have one. But my mom has one and she loves using it instead of having to carry cash. She has never gone over or anything. My dad prefers to use cash, but my mom doesn't like to carry anymore than a little bit in case of an emergency. My dad insists she carry at least a twenty in her wallet.

Well, I know he didn't get it from the magazine. LOL He wanted her to carry a hundred, but she flatly refused. He even stuck one in her purse before, and she sneaked it right back into his billfold. lol

That's funny! I hate carrying big hunks of cash around simply because I will spend it. I haven't been out shopping in ages. But, that doesn't stop me from spending money online on the rare occasion that I have any extra.

We still use credit cards for almost everything and then pay them off at the end of the month. We are only charged interest if we carry a balance on these cards. We earn frequent flyer miles with our credit card spending and we really keep up with this and use it for nice travel. My husband basically has a made a hobby out of growing our frequent fly miles accounts. We used our miles for 3 (three) tickets to the Hawaiian islands in December. Did not pay one penny for them.

Lucky ducky! I wish everyone could be so smart about credit card use. I try never to use my credit cards. I'm so worried about getting into debt that I can't pay off.

We had one of those Green Dot cards for awhile. I think that was back before we had a bank account, but you need a credit card for everything today, so that was ours. Then we opened the bank account and have used our credit/debit card ever since. We use it for everything, we never carry cash on us, unless we know in advance that we need it. We don't normally overdraw our account either, unless some emergency pops up. I just keep track of our spending in the check book, and he hands me his reciepts at the end of the day, and I'll tell him everyday exactly how much money we have to spend. Sometimes if he plans on spending and knows we're sort of short on funding, he'll call and ask if he has any money to spend.

It's really good that you have an open communication with your spouse about money.

That's a good idea. I basically do the same type of thing, I load a card and made sue they won't let me go over the limit. This card is an auto deposit card and I have it set up with my employer. I work on the road and do all my banking on-line, I haven't been in a bank in over 8 years! tdemex

We use our debit card as a credit card so we get rewards returned to us. At first we used it as a debit card with our password but then the bank changed everything and made it better for us to use it as a credit card. We love it! We get money back from spending money. lol I should be shopping!! LOL

I have a PayPal debit card that I use all of the time. It is rally great to have. Just like your Green Dot card there is not interest since you are using your PayPal balance, and no fees to use it like a debit card.

I just got my Paypal debit card last month but haven't used it yet. That's where all my Mylot money is living! I would love to use my Paypal debit card for an Ebay purchase. That way I wouldn't feel like the money was coming out of the household income.

I do, but I use my bank card. I make sure to check online the statement when I do use it, to avoid any overdraft fees and it has been working for me so far. I don't like to use cash these days, as there are too many thieves stealing purses and wallets and at least with my card my bank protects me in the event of unauthorized use.

Where it's accepted, I used my debit card every occassion I can. It saves me having to worry about cash, and I can see on my statement where my money has been going.

No, I have not used an debit card for my personal expenses.. Not yet do I. I do know that my mate uses the Green Dot card. But, I have not used it yet. I agree with you 100% about the bank debit card. It is very hard to resist going into an overdraft and bounced check. That happened to me, just without the check. I never write any checks. The ATM machine allowed me to get more money that I did not have in my account. I was able to get more, and I had to pay all those extra fees, plus the amount that I had taken out. But, never again. I will just use the Rush Card invented by Russell Simmons. I have had it with the bank debit card. I will only keep my checking account open just for a rainy day. And just for saving purposes. I am dedicating my efforts towards the Rush Card. The Green Dot and The Rush Card are smart choices in helping others better manage their bank accounts.

Oops I didn't see that you had also mentioned about the overdrafts when I was writing my response. I've had the same problem. My bank will allow a negative balance of several hundred dollars before they stop allowing withdrawals. Don't ask me how I know.

I use a debit card that comes out of my bank account. I find it a lot more convenient than carrying cash. Somehow I am always afraid my cash will get lost or stolen if I carry it around. However, as you mentioned, it is very easy to bounce checks/transactions that way since it is harder to keep track of the money, and banks (my bank, at least) will keep putting transactions through no matter how much money is in the account. They just keep tacking on the $30 fee if it is over. Another bad thing about debit cards is that I have heard that you are not as well protected from unauthorized use as you are with a credit card. (I don't have any credit cards myself). My mom just had $1700 in Australian dollars charged to her card while she was in the hospital. (She has never been to Australia, and her credit card was sitting at home). If that happened with my debit card, I would be in big trouble. So, maybe I will check out that card that you have, it sounds a little safer.

Yes sometimes I do, I like to use a prepaid debit credit card, its just like a green dot card its where you load your own cash in it, and you dont have to worry about over draft fees because the card is loaded with your own cash to me I like them a little better then using a regular credit or debit.

I have using debits cards for a few years now. I like it better than the credit card because I don't have to worry about very high interest rates and surcharges. Debit cards also help me manage my finances better. Unlike the credit card where I can buy things without dipping into my saving account, the debit card let me shop only when I have money to spare. When I don't have money, then I don't go shopping.

Hello beautyqueen26, I got a debit master card two years ago and rarely use it. I only use it once a while when I go for my grocery shopping. It is quite convenient too to have such a card. At this moment I still need to go and cash in the money at the bank cash deposit machine. I don't have a savings account with the bank and so I can't do it online.

I have a bank debit card which I use for everything, though now I have my second job I don't need to use to for much as my second job pays me in cash weekly. I don't like the idea of using credit cards as I think the interest rate is really high and if you miss one payment, the debt increases. I keep track of how much is in my account online so I know when to transfer money before I get into my overdraft and before the fees attack!!!
