United States
February 11, 2009 7:28am CST
I was just listening to the morning news. Stamps are going to go up in price in May to 44 cents. They say you can go and buy forever stamps now to save money. I also heard something on the news the other day that the post office is thinking of closing on Saturdays.

That is just ridiculous!! why do they keep doing this? you cant tell me that many people are sending mail that the postal service has to increase costs in order to profit. most people I know try to avoid using snail mail people have resorted to using email, text messaging or phone rather than deal with the postal service as far as the post offices being closed on saturday.... mine already IS closed on Saturday

I think I would't mind not getting mail on Saturday's if it saves money in the long run....and I send alot of cards in the mail but the raise won't really be that much....they need it...so they have to have it.

I don't think it closing on Saturdays would have too much of an effect( Okay unless that was April 15 ) but, they are going up on the prices again? Wow, that is kind of absurd. My grandfather still has a lot of the cheaper ones( like below 10 cents).

wow, this is the first I am hearing of it, but I am not surprised they have raised it so much in the last couple years it is just sad... I have resorted to calling my bill companies and asking them for payment centers...and there are 4 bills a month I go pay in person now to save on my postage...I still buy a book of stamps but now it is every other month...and if they close on saturday, I dont really think that would bother me...another day to not get any bills...LOL have a great day!!

This is a government run business. Some of the regulations that seem ridiculus are the fact that I live less than a mile from the PO I have to have a mailbox at the PO. The family that lives down a back road, a mile from the main road, that only goes to their house get their mail delivered. Junk mail gets a much lower rate than you or I. When the PO comes up with something that is profitable and worth sell off the government will sell the right to someone else and the PO does not get that money for upgrades. there is very little incentive for the PO to change as if they develop a new product they will lose it later. they were doing a jewelry line and because someone complained that their company could do that the congress stopped that and sold it off. The other thing is we have to be fair so it cost $0.42 to mail a letter across town and across the nation. Let a private company do it and you will see service improve. Look at UPS and Fedex.

I have not used more than 3 stamps in the past 3 months. I do everything on ine, emails and online banking save me from worrying about the cost of stamps.

well, here in canada, it costs a whopping 54 cents to mail a letter! i didnt send out christmas cards this past year and probably never will again! i am sure that the price will be on the rise as it has been 54 cents for a stamp for quite a while

Gimme a break! The stamps have been going up a cent or two every year faithfully now and that is ridiculous. If you going up a cent or so, then why close? I have a problem with that. Unless you can see cutting folks mail to 5 days a week, go for it. I can understand cutting back, but then raising up the rates already. I remember when you could send a book for a buck and change, now it's over two dollars and fifty cents now.

I believe both, and that's why I have plenty of those stamps that don't have a monetary amount on them, they have been used once in awhile whenever I need to mail something. 44 cents... ack, I remember when it went up to 22 cents or something and my parents got irritated lol! I may even remember when it was 19 cents to send a letter and 15 cents for a postcard. Come to think of it it may have been 15 cents for a letter and even less for a postcard... 10 cents? 11 cents? Yes, it's getting ridiculous in my opinion. I usually send email and ecards to avoid a single-use charge like stamps.

I guess with the economy being so bad they have to do something to be able to pay the postal workers. They can't close altogether or there wouldn't be mail. No bills would be paid.......etc.

hello moneymommy i haven't heard the news of the postage stamps going up like that in prices to forty-four cents a piece and i haven't heard of the forever stamps either. what exactly are the forever stamps? thanks for sharing the news with us all here at Mylot about the postage stamp increase and also about the forever stamps. and i did hear the news about the post office is thinking about stopping delivery of the mail on Saturdays. everybody needs two days off a week. right? nobody needs to get any mail over the weekends. getting mail on mondays through fridays is enough mail for us all through the week. let the postman finally have his two days off together. lol keep those new discussions coming! take care and have a beautiful evening.

Forever stamps you pay for them now and you can use them forever. No matter how high postage goes up in the future.

I am a philatilist and feel really burdened to know about that ..... but alas! thats the life is .... Cheers! Vishwas

I heard the same just yesterday. Wow! I try to pay by phone or in person when I can. I do have to send some bills out by mail but have been considering signing up for bill pay and paying everything electronically. That would sure save on postage and envelopes and the environment as well. With the internet and email the post office I am sure has had a decline in postage sales.
