'Early to bed and early to rise makes a person healthy, wealthy and wise' is an age old saying. If this is the criteria, then I am the least healthy, least wealthy and least wise.,because getting up early morning is so very difficult for me.I can sit up till late at night and in fact I go to sleep very late, after midnight, most of the days;but right from young, I could never get up early.Thankfully, this habit of mine has not landed me in any trouble or time pressure till now.Even in my University days, before exams or whatever, I could sit up late but never get up early. What about you? Do share your thoughts on this mundane subject.

I hate mornings. Unless I was to bed at 6pm the night before there's no way your going to happily find me awake before dawn. Even when I was in college an 8am class was just way to early. I can remember my freshman year having to take an 8am class. I made it almost every day but slept through most of it. Then I would be so tired from the morning that I would skip my 2:15 class and go back to bed. I miss those days of sleeping when ever I felt like it!

I am just like you Kala! I am not at all a morning person and find it extremely hard to see the virgin sun at the moment of dawn. Only a few times when I could , I actually found it very beautiful, a precious moment to treasure lifelong. Lucky are those who could wake up at the streak of dawn! I always made sure to complete my stuffs my the previous night for I know that I could never never make it the next morning. Back in the college days, like you, I never could made the most of the mornings and even to this day love to stay awake all night. I am a nocturnal person, no doubts...

It is a formula for good health. Actually the early sun rays are beneficial for our health. If we woke up early in the morning and there is a chance to get the rays and by that we can be healthy. Through the sun rays many ailments could be cured. The sun rays contain Vitamin D which helps to the absorption of calcium from the food. So there are number of benefits from sun rays and the morning sun rays are more beneficial. So keeping these facts behind the older generation made the sentence and it become a proverb. Hi Kalav, my hubby and sons have the same habit like you, late to bed and late to wake up. But I prefer to go bed early which I fail to implement and now I am adjusting with the habits of my family, but I have to woke up early morning to finish my works (lol)

True.Especially, in a tropical country like ours, we have an abundant supply of vitamin D, but this can be absorbed only early in the morning , because it gets so hot as the day advances. And of course, I too agree that this makes us finish our work fast in the morning and gives a sense of relief.

Hi Kalav, I am also a night bird like you...I am in the habit of reading a book at night and will go on and on. Then I realize it's too late and subsequently would go to bed. In the morning I've to wake up before 7 as hubby has to go to office, and I've to catch up with the household chores before it gets too late. When I was working in a school as a teacher, sometimes when the workload was much, I would wake till 3 or 4 in the morning to finish my work.

Yeah! When we get up late, it does become a bit of rush in hte morning if we have to get things ready for hubby, children etc. That is why, whenever, I haev the duty to pack lunch for the morning[to my son's office when he is in town]I make a request to my husband to not allow me to sleep after a particular time.Only the things can be managed.

It all comes down to habit. if you have to wake up every morning, early, after a while, it becomes your second nature, and you wake up at the same hour, even when you don't have to. I like going to bed early and wake up early. It makes me feel that I can accomplish much more if I have the whole day in front of me. And it's like a vicious circle.Once I'm up early, I go through the things I have to do, and even more, on that day, so when night comes, I'm so tired, that I have to go to sleep early. Going to sleep early, I have enough hours by early morning, so no problem to wake up.And it goes like this, even on the weekend. Most times I'm trying to sleep in, but I just can't.So I wake up and do things in the house...or read, or watch TV.

i hate getting up early. in fact, it is physically painful some days. it has never gotten me into trouble, and i can make it to places on time (work, school, appointments, etc) but it's absolutely miserable to wake up early. i feel like half a person for the whole first half of the day when i wake up before my body's ready!

Kala! Let me say that nothing is mundane. Each and every topic has its own importance. So you need not feel that way.........!! I am an early riser and I get up very early in the morning at about 5.15 a.m.. Actually, I need to fetch fresh milk from a dairy early in the dawn. I go to bed in time say about 10.30 p.m. and does not like to awake late. I feel, if I get up late, all my routine goes hay wire. I feel fresh in the morning and can execute many tasks easily, which otherwise I do not feel like completing at night. By the night I feel tired and sleepy and just do not feel like engaging myself in any lengthy task. Have a great day!

Oh ! You have got it the wrong way. My husband would never ever dream of making his coffee when I am at home.Actually, this became a crucial matter of discussion in my response to an old discussion started by Perspectives long back. My husband , [poor thing , would not make his coffee and would wait patiently for me to get up late and then make his coffee. He would never complain and all my trying to persuade him to just add a bit of instant coffee powder to a cup of milk[already boiled and kept in the fridge--so just needs heating up], to alleviate my guilty conscience was of no avail whatsoever. That is why I used to feel terrible when I get up one hour after he wakes up and gave him a brilliant idea-to go back to sleep after his morning walk! He prefers to do this than be up and about after making his own coffee. That discussion with Raia was such a long one and I wrote a page long response to it about all our cooing habits with the historical background you see.

I am a night owl. I can get up early like that if I really have too as long as I take some Tylenol PM or something early in the evening and go to bed. However, most of the time, I don't get into bed before about 1-2 AM, so I have not been asleep too long before the sun comes up...

This is exactly what I too do.If I am likely to travel and I have to catch an early morning flight or train then I pop in a sleeping pill that would help me sleep early, and then get up early in the morning. Otherwise , lack of sleep causes a headache.

I have to get up 'early' for work. I work at a vet clinic in kennels, and we are the first people to clock in and get things going. I don't have an alarm, Mother just wakes me up when she gets up because we go to the same place. If I really want to, I can wake up within a half-hour of a time that I desire to get up. A few days ago, I wanted up at 3.30 to talk to a friend, and I woke up around 3.50. I can also sleep until 10.00. It really just depends if I have something to get up and do as to whether I get up early or not.

It's not hard for me to get up early bcause I was used to when going to school and in my nursing duty in the hospital. The hospital was so far in our house that I need to get up really early so I will never got mark late. So, whenever there is no class I already woke up around 5:00 am. Because of me being used to in early wake-ups. I think if that would healthy if you sleep really early that night so could have enough rest even though you woke up early.

Hello kalav....well I am not much of a late night person and prefer to hit the sack by 10.30 or 11pm...I usually get up at around six every day.....Even in my school/college days I have been following this habit.Even during exam time I could not sit beyond 10 o'clock, but I could get up early even before the sun was up and sit with my books.....Its so peaceful and calm in the morning and I used to enjoy my studies in the early hours before the rest of the house and the world was up and about...

I tried sending amessage to Rose , and I could not get it sent.i do not know what happened.Should I send it to mithra otherwise?

Unfortunately, this saying will never apply to me because I work nights. So I don't know what will qualify as "early to bed" ( I get home at 12noon), "early to rise" (which is somewhere between 8-9pm) makes a person healthy (that I know I'm not), wealthy (yup, a lot of benefits working nights) and wise (ahhhmm, no comment here. LOL). This phrase should be updated or outdated, don't you agree? ^-^

I've been the complete opposite my entire life. Even as a kid and teenager, I was up early (like 5:00 A.M.) each and everyday. I can stay awake even now until the wee hours of the morning and still be awake before 7:00 A.M. Now with having a baby, I have learned to enjoy the sleep that I can squeeze in, and occasionally sleep during the day when needed.

Monday through Friday, I get out of bed by 6:45 a.m., on Saturday, I am up by 5:15 a.m., and on Siunday, I try to sleep until no later thatn 8:30 a.m. It is not that I am a great morning person, it is just the routine I am used to. If I get up late during the week or on Saturday, I face being late for work. Sunday is my day off completely, except for working on my computer which I do not have to be on a set schedule to do. Most nights, I am asleep between 11 p.m. and midnight, but I do have nights where I toss and turn all night and get no rest at all. Those nights do not make my day very easy when I have to get up and get going. I think I would be in a world of trouble if my husband wasn't kind enough to make sure I get u each morning. I am getting better abou it, but he still has to wake me quite often.

I too definitely need someone to wake me up.On the rare occasion when I wake up, it would be because I have had a disturbed night because I wANTED TO WAKE UP eARLY.tHAT IS WHY ON SUCH RARE OCCASIONS, i resort to the sleeping dose and then wake up early, than have a disturbed night and feel horrible the next day.

Hi, Do you agree that "Burning Out" syndrome has also increased in new genearation, beside early age Hypertension and Diabetes attack? Possibly these are due to indisciplined life we are leading. If you want to remain active and productive for long, U 've to follow the(mundane) old philosophy-'early to bed.....'. =Lahiri,Kolkata,India.

Hi Kala, I am upset that you have posted this discussion already! I would have done it if I had not stumbled upon you here! Great people think alike. (Or is it fools seldom differ?!). I fit well to your description. Like smokers finding it too easy to quit smoking "because they have tried it many times(!)", I too have been trying to get up early and have accumulated "good experience" in it! Particularly with my interest in spirituality where practically every religious master insists on waking up "Brhama muhurtam", I have virtually defied all their advice! I console myself quoting from the same masters that God is all mercy and he will definitely bear with me for not getting up early in the morning! The fun is my wife is totally opposite to me. She starts feeling dizzy right from 9:00 PM but she gets up sharp at 4:OO AM to the glee of all the spiritual masters, who get tempted to scorn at her husband! I too would like to become a great spiritual master one day -- the only one who is going to grant liberation to all spiritual seekers who get up late in the morning!
