Are you ready for HDTV?

With the deadline fast approaching to switch to digital TV, I am still not prepared.Yes, I know that I am dragging my feet on this matter, but I keep telling my children that I am not ready for it. Evidently I am not alone because the local news is reporting that there are still about 30,000 households in my area who are not yet ready. I have been waiting to see if all the local stations would indeed switch on this coming Tuesday. So far the most popular station here just announced yesterday that they will be delaying the switch-over until May 3. I am still undecided as to whether I'll switch or not. How many people in your area are still holding out?

Are you sure its May 3rd??? Thought it was June 12th that they moved it up to. Have you gotten one of those coupons? Think the reason they did move the date up is due to so many people not ready and not having the converters, and not sure but think the govt actually ran out of the coupons unless they plan to reissue the coupon program. Well I'm all set....got my converter back in November and am all hooked up. The reception really IS amazingly clear even though the signals are still analog..some digital...have more stations too...like four different channels of NBC,ABC--I really don't watch that much TV...but still wanted to get TV channels..would hate to be completely without

I know our local channels here are all switching on Tuesday despite the extension granted by the Congress. I thought the bill was to make them wait until nearly everyone was ready or had a chance to get ready, but I guess not! Annie

The stations get the choice. I think in my primary market, I have heard one station say they are waiting until June, but another is switching Tuesday. It's really been a circus.

Hi Pye, They can convert anytime in between Tuesday and June. Some will actually do it on Tuesday as they have invested a lot of money to get it in place.

Amazingly I am. I had gotten 2 converter boxes a few months ago with the coupons I received in the mail. But I still needed a 3rd as I have a total of 3 analog televisions that need converter boxes. I did not really want to buy one seeing as I'd have to pay the full amount, but I finally bit the bullet a few days ago and now all 3 of my TV's are good to go.

Don't understand why you would hold out. If you don't have one of the newer tvs then you will need to get a box. I bought 2 boxes, yes we have cable tv, but you never know what can happen and the boxes cost me $9. a piece so it was worth it for me to have then just in case. It is coming sooner or later. I dont' understand what the big deal is with people i've had my boxes nearly a year, is it something new and people are afraid of it. How many will be ready May 3rd. I like what you said you are undecided as to whether you will switch or not. You don't have a choice is what I'm told when they shut off the analog, regular tv is done. Either you will be hooked up to cable or you will have a box, one way or the other it going digital. It isn't something we pick and choose. I think they should of went on and changed over because it is going to be the same thing on May3rd.

i understand, we have 3 one in each bedroom and one in the living room, huby watches the one in living room till about dark then goes to the bedroom, and this one just makes noise while i am on the computer. But I would think you would want one for the news and weather. What ever I hope you have a great day, and probably better off without it not much on the news you want to see either.

Ah, bdugas, but I do have a choice - whether I want to watch TV at all or not. I am basically a reader and don't feel that I will miss out on much if I don't have a TV to watch.

We've been ready for a couple of years. I just want to point out that not all digital programming is HD. However, all HD is digital. If you have not gotten your converter boxes or your coupons, make sure to get on the waiting list. https://www.dtv2009.gov/WaitingList.aspx Not a referral link! You want to make sure that, if you use over-the-air channels, you are ready for the transition.

My dilemma, Paula, is that I don't feel certain that watching TV is that important to me anymore. Lately I really have to struggle to find programs that I truly enjoy.

You must get your hubby to walk you through the setup, sandymay. I really don't like having anything in my house that I can't operate.

I agree, I dont either..and I have gotton him to show me a few times and I forget every time what he said...lol...Im just not interested in electronics but want to be able to use them...Does that make sense? Im not a big TV watcher either, just certain shows that are on when hes home and has the TV on anyways...I know there is a simpler way to used just the one remote instead of 2 but I think the truth is,,,my hubby dont know either...When he finds a way to do something, he does not stray from it even if theres a way thats 10 times easier and Im sure there is....lol

It is my understanding that on June 12 all tv stations in the United States have to change over to HDTV. I got two of the coupons for 40 dollars from the government and used they to buy two converter boxes. Unfortunately, the first box broke and the second does not always work very well.

Thankfully, I've been ready for a long time since I have cable and they switched to digital some time ago. When they started making the switch they offered it at a discount rate with free installation and they said then it would cost more for those who waited until they had to have it so I did it then. As far as HDTV, I haven't gotten a new TV and I don't intend to until I have to...lol! Annie

We have satellite tv so we are ready. However, my daughter doesn't have anything like that so she needs a converter box. She has the coupons but we can never find anyplace that has them in stock. I hope to get one soon for her. However, I think that it is effective now that they won't switch until June 12th or somewhere around there. I believe Obama got that bill passed due to all of the problems with coupons, etc.

I think the bill was lukewarm at best, carolscash, since the changeover will be up to the discretion of the individual stations.

I am in Canada so I have a couple of years yet, by that time I will probably have a new TV if I can afford it. I understand if you are on cable you do not have to switch over as the changeover is only for over the air signals where you have an antenna or rabbit ears.

Those are my feelings also, deanna. I feel that since this is government-sponsored it should not cost the consumer anything at all. After all, they made a huge amount of money when they sold the airspace.

Hi friend, they are talking about it here too in Australia. I'm afraid to say I have not a clue as to what it is all about. Can you enlighten me? What is required for the switch. Here they are talking about free tv having 30 channels we can watch...that makes no sense to me as I only watch a little TV as it is. Do I have to by a new television? I have one I purchased about 4 years ago...it's one of those big ones, not a flat screen, not LCD or plasma....do I need one of these new type sets...(expensive )?

Most of the TVs in my house are ready. The only one that is not ready as of yet is the one in my bedroom, but we have until November before it switches over, so I have a little time yet. I have to save up for a new television.. so I shall be posting a lot on here over the next couple of months! That's just a joke.. I shall save up though. I want a really big one this time. I usually only have small ones, but I might treat myself just this once.

I see HDTV being sold out very fast at TV stores. HD Screens for use with Computers are also becoming common. I have used HDTV to view HD content but didnt find much difference though!
