Is anybody too scared to fly?

If so, why? Will you fly anyway? If not, is there something that could make it so you could fly? Is there any way you would ever get on a plane again and what way is that? What would have to happen to change your mind?

I was in the Air Force and I hate to fly. It doesn't scare me, it just gives me a headache no matter what I fly in with only one exception so far.... I loved flying in the big helicopters with the open bay doors like you see in the movies. Maybe it was the extra air - no cabin pressure, but I never got a headache in those. I love being at sea though. Would have made a great sailor.

I flew all the time as a kid. Even flew to Okinawa and back to the States as an 8 and 11 year old kid. Now I am 27 and terrified to fly. I guess it stems from anxiety issues a few years back - I have overcome most of it but still deal with some things - the biggest thing flying. I have no problem at all being on the sea - its weird but I LOVE boating and have no fear whatsoever. I fear drowning but I don't even think about that while I am boating. When I am flying i guess my biggest thing is you are stuck. You can not land a plane on your own or choose to just get off. Once you are there you are stuck. I am somewhat afraid of it crashing but more not being in control and not being able to get off I think. I don't know I mean I know it is irrational but I'm still scared just the same. :-( I want to get over it though cause I live in Florida and want to be able to fly back and forth to Maine instead of the awful long drive.

You might start with taking just a couple of short flights. I remember going to a local little airport (too small for jet planes) and hiring a pilot and plane to take my kids and their cousins up for their first plane rides. It wasn't very expensive, you pay for a half hour or an hour etc and the good thing of course is you can tell them at anytime to take you back. Otherwise if you hate the long drive you could always take the train to Maine, or bus but the train might be more comfortable. Either way you can just relax until you get there.

I'm not scared to fly, because I've done so a lot when I was a child. : ) I think most people are afraid to fly because they're afraid that the plane will crash? Even though, car accidents are far more common than plane accidents, people choose to drive to their destination anyway. : )

No, I am not afraid of flying planes and it is and always will be safer to fly than to drive. Even though, when a plane crashes, it instantly gets headline news, it is very rare and the chances are probably 1 in a million. I fly about once every 2 months and nothing has ever happened.

Well...the only thing making me scared to fly is the hi-jacking of airplanes. Freaks me out man. The whole 911 bombing totally freaked me out. I really don't want something like that to happen ever again.
