Comfort foods

What foods offer you a hug from the inside? What foods do you turn to when you need a pick me up? What foods bring you joy to cook? Why do those foods bring simple joys to you? I love popcorn balls and strawberry rhubarb pie because My Ohio grandmother made them fresh. Her hubby's fresh grown peas made me love them fresh from the pod. My mother's chili is great on a winter day. It warms me from the inside out. It was a staple in our house on the coldest of days. Spaghetti made with Josh tastes far better then it should because of the closeness we gained from cooking it. Tell me about you comfort foods.

I love chocolate! But not just any kind. Has to be gourmet or why bother? I also like salmon cooked by grilling. I love summer for all the strawberries, cantaloupe, and pineapple.

now those are things that taste good together. Growing up my family would eat what we called left-overs on bread(not that creative) and we would put a piece of bread on the plate put mashed potato, then meat and then gravy. It is also yummy to do this with thanksgiving or Christmas left-overs. Eating this still gives me some comfort.

My comfort food was chocolate and ice cream... but since i've got diabetes already, i don't think i can eat those sweet treats anymore.. =( i miss eating my comfort food but i have to control myself and eat something else, something healthier..(veggies, fish, oats)

There is both treats made with diabetics in mind. BUT remember to use them as treats only. And don't do what my dad does and eat it before bed (very bad) Have it a couple of hours after lunch then go out for a nice walk. Check your levels and you'll be fine. Diabetic treats contain something that can give you some bathroom issues if you eat too much of them... again that's another good reason to save them as treats.

I really enjoy cooking meals that have been in the family for years. For comfort, though, I am more likely to reach for choclate or ice-cream.

Both seem to be favorites LOL. I guess we can agree that the makers of chocolate and ice cream will keep their jobs.

Mine would have to be pizza. It always hits the sweet spot for me. I can eat pizza anytime even when I am not even hungery. Pizza and maybe a side of garlic bread would pick me up anyday. If it was a homemade meal it would be my Mothers Sunday roasts, ever since I was a kid they were always the best and still are.

Once the pizza has lots of meat and cheese, I'm happy and maybe some nice dips for the crust.

hm... I've never had a Strawberry Rhubarb pie before. I'm not really a big dessert person, but I love a good meal of dumplings, and chili is just plain awesome.

My ultimate comfort food is chocolate. I also eat chocolate chip cookies or ice cream if available. I also crave junk food when I get depressed... but usually don't give in. But I must say my tooth is too sweet to pass the sweets when I need their 'support'!

Chocolate seems to be a favorite for many. My hubby hates it but me.... If you want to let the sweet tooth get a little and not hurt your waist... try keeping Kisses or other "bite size" candies. The key is ONE (I have to remind myself often)

I don't enjoy food that much. I think it's a necessary evil. When I feel shaky, I eat. Other than that I don't really think about it. Thanks

Eat enough to stay healthy or I'll worry. Now what do you find comfort in?

I acutally have alot of comfort foods. I love cheese that's the biggest of them, so cheesey scalloped potatoes, is a must for me in this catagory. My momma's homemade egg noodles, yum yum... Childhood favorite, ham and gravy over toast. Anything I can get to taste like my momma's home cooking. I live 1100 miles from my momma, and don't get to see her regularly so anything that reminds me of her and home is always great.

i was once at my boyfriend's house. her sister bought this beautiful strawberry cake. it had strawberries all over a pink colored cake with white, soft trim. it looked delicious but i thought it would taste too sweet... ...until i was served a slice. i took a bite and it had fresh, sweet strawberries. its pink icing had strawberries chopped and mixed in. even its white trim had a hint of strawberry. wow. it was strawberry heaven. it was not at all too sweet! it was creamy and had all textures which made the cake very interesting. unlike other sweets and comfort food that i also love, that strawberry shortcake (which my boyfriend's sister buys from a small, out-of-the-way bakery) is absolutely forget-your-name drop-your-underwear delicious. ^_^

hahaha if you're anywhere nearby, sure! ^_^ i can also give you directions. the pie is CHEAP! personally, i think they should sell it at a higher price. lol. they also make delicious banana walnut pie. i think the secret to delicious comfort food is balance. not too sweet, not too sour, not too anything. it surprises you at every turn. my favorite comfort food happens to be generally sweet, but they shouldn't be TOO sweet that you feel like hurling after having had a lot. hehe ^_^ oh, re: the underwear thing... go ahead and steal away! =) i didn't have it copyrighted. lol ^_^ i hope you use it in a book and i get to read it! that should be fun hehe

We love popcorn here! The girls and I use if for a snack and movie nights. It's even healthy if we don't add all the good stuff to it... but then what would be the point?

My would have to be McDonalds, pizza or pasta. When I was in college every time my roomate and I would get stressed out by our other roomates we would always go to McDonalds(ah fun memories) any way..... When Im sick I always want my moms homemade soup. I'm glad she only lives about and hour and 1/2 away from me so when Im sick she'll come up on the weekend and make it for me. I know how to make her soup but It just always tastes better when it comes from her. I know its proably just a mental thing.

It always tastes better when you don't have to make it. Have you ever run into the problem that you don't want to eat after going through all the work of fixing it? When I cook big, that happens to me. My husband gets so frustrated when I tell him I'm just not hungry and will eat later. OPPs...lol

I think a true Aholi food that used to bring joy to my guts was one called Dek Ngoo-some crushed peas seasoned with shea butter oil-that was a truely good food, but today, many modern Acholi women Know not how to cook this traditional dish!

A lot of old traditional foods are fading in our modern world. It is true of all cultures I think.

My favorite is Lasagna. Either the kind I make myself, or the best kind I can buy at either Safeway or Superstore. I also love chili con carne, the Texas kind that you get at Safeway. I have also made chili, but I am not that good, but I am good at making spaghetti with meatballs, or making a macaroni casserole with ground round, tomato sauce, hot pepper flakes, green, and red peppers, onions, and some mixed vegetables. I prefer just the corn, but my husband does not like corn that much. Anyway it is a good way to sneak in some veggies and I put in a few sprigs of coriander. As for family, not getting into that. These are what I make and what I love, especially the lasagna. Maybe I will get brave enough to make some with ricotta cheese.

I get upset at some of the frozen types of lasagna. They make me cry. I missed my last years annual Lasagna so you and another poster have me wanting to make it before it gets too hot. I put corn in a lot of things and my hubby doesn't like it either. It goes into my goulash even. Darn it.... I'm starved!

I have a few comfort foods in mind. Namely chili. You are right about that being great on a winter's day. I also like spaghetti with meatballs. I really like to add a lot of sugar to my pasta sauce. I like brownies or anything chocolate of course! When it comes to really wanting some kind of comfort in my tummy I will make a good hot cup of tea with sugar and cream in it.
