Keeping the same doctors

We recently moved back to the city from a rural area. My kids doctor is now a hour drive away. If you really liked your kids doctor and the kids liked him would you keep him as your kids doctor and deal with the hour long drive or would you find a doctor closer to home? My kids both have an appointment today out of town with this doctor.

I think if you are comfortable with the doctors sure. And if the kids are comfortable with them yes. Sometimes that is more important than distance. Good doctors can be hard to find. Once our kids build confidence in someone, that can be hard to rebuild with someone else.

If I really liked the doctor I had..I would stick with him for sure. An hour away is a long drive but it's worth it for a doctor you can trust. Maybe you could get your doctor to refer you to one you could see just for the basics that's closer to your home.

i will still keep contact with the same doctor then i will find a new one near by. if my child is already used to the new doctor then i think it is time to chnage to the new one. i would do it gradually, slowly. so my child will not be wondering or something like that. i have a three year old son and his picture appears as my avatar

My son has special needs so we travel 45 minutes to see the doctor that has seen him since he was born. It's worth it to us, to have the person who saw him at his worse see him as he grows. They know his history first hand.

I was in a similar situation not to long ago. My kid's ped was in another town an hour away, we choose this doctor because it was so close to the hosptial and so on. We liked him but there was no major connection with him, so we kept him as we went on another search for our current doctor closer to our home, it's only 5 minute drive now. As soon as we found this one, we let the other go. It was the best choice we made because at the time, the gas was 4 dollars a gallon.

Obviously if I were in another state I couldn't keep the same one, but if I was only an hour away I'd keep the same one because there is a relationship there. So long as insurance didn't change or such. We've had our doctors for almost two years now for our oldest and I'd not change them. They know his history, they've worked with him, and now they see his sister as well. There is a great raporte there. The OB/GYN office I go to has a policy that you don't have to see the same doctor because the information is in the computer. I personally ask for the same one because I love my doctor and it's worth moving my schedule around so I can see him. And the drive can be thought of as extra time spent with your kiddos. You can spend time playing games on the way, listening to a book on cd, or such. Namaste-Anora
