Three boys are in the school's yard bragging how great their fathers are. The first one says, "Well, my father runs the fastest. He can shoot an arrow and start to run. I tell you, he gets there before the arrow." The second boy says, "Ha! You think that's fast. My father is a hunter. He can shoot his gun and get there before the bullet." The third one listens to the first two and shakes his head. He then says, "You two know nothing about fast. My father works for the government. He stops work at 5pm and he is home by 4:15pm."

Not all government jobs work that way, although many do. As a state employee, I had to be at work for the full shift. If I needed to take time off, I was charged for it. As long as I had time on the books, it worked well.

We were always told that if you want stability get a government job. But then they did not pay as much as in the private sector and they were much stricter. I remember taking a typing test when I first left business school, and I was not that good, so by the time they took away the mistakes, I was only 40 wpm and they wanted someone with 60 wpm. Also they wanted someone who planned to be single during their whole working life, so there were no such thing as a married woman working part time or even full time for the government when her children were old enough to be on their own. Now the government jobs pay more and get more holidays then that in the private sector. How things have changed.
