So I have a cat named Ugly, I know it's a weird name but she was really ugly when she was little. She has grown into her looks lol. Anyway she has a problem she can't seem to meow or purr. She can make noise, but she sounds more like a pigeon cooing rather than a cat. When she does attempt to meow it sounds like a whisper. Her purring is also not audible, if I hold my hand up to her neck I can feel a little vibration but there is no noise like other cats make. Actually the sounds she makes are quite entertaining and keep me smiling and laughing. Anyone out there have a cat that doesn't know how to meow? I hope it's not anything serious. I read on yahoo answers that you have to teach your cat to meow, I really don't think this is the case because I still have her mother here with us, seems like she would've learned from her.

Our cat didn't 'talk' for years. She would make tiny noises occasionally (and snores...) but no meows, no purring, nothing like that. I was never worried, since she's affectionate, playful and so full of life that we have trouble keeping up with her. Just recently, though, she suddenly started: occasional meows, proper purring, everything. No idea why, but it's nice. So don't worry as long as she's healthy and happy. Perhaps she's just the strong, silent type. Or a librarian in a furry disguise.

I agree as long as she is happy and healthy it is fine with me. Maybe one day she will meow but their is no rush.

My cat completely lost his meower a few years ago. He would open his mouth and start to meow but nothing would come out. After about a week I was concerned enough to take him to the vet. The vet asked me what was wrong and I told her he lost his meower. When the veternarian lifted him onto the table, he let out the loudest meow I ever heard him make and I felt like the village idiot. I still don't know what was wrong but that was the loudest noise he ever made and mostly his meow is very low (and sometimes it still reverts to nonexistent)and so is his purr. But at least I know he's healthy and that's what matters.
