Mall chooses Barry Manilow music to deter crime!

I was laughing when I read this today but in New Zealand a shopping mall has decided to pipe in Barry Manilow music throughout their mall in hopes that it will pacify unruly teens who congregate there, or at least convince them to go elsewhere! There seems to be a group of several dozen teenagers who regularly spread trash, spray graffiti, get drunk, use drugs, use cuss words and intimidate patrons at this outdoor mall. The city council, police and local property owners covering 410 businesses agree that "nice, easy listening" music like Manilow's "Can't Smile Without You," "Mandy" and other hits might change the behavior of loitering teens. Personally, I don't care too much for Barry Manilow. I don't hate him, but he is not my first choice either. My husband really likes Barry Manilow, he is dying to see him in concert. And funny thing here, my teenage son likes some of Barry Manilow's songs too. I wonder if this tactic that the mall has planned will actually help or do anything at all. Have a great day, and happy myLotting!!!

thats so funny I would think they might even put in elevator music!? that would be so boring for most teens today. adn thesre kids need to be arrested and their parents held accountable for the kid actions. I like very few of his songs but my kids also like some of them too. Too Its like what they used to say on tv Do you know where your kids are tonight?

I know. I just don't understand where parents are when their teenagers or children for that matter are out there up to mischief. It is so sad that children are not all supervised or raised with manners or ethics anymore. I only like about 2 of his songs myself and that is only every once in a while. My husband has about 10 of his cd's and about 3 of his dvd's! Thanks for your comment and have a great day!!!

Oh! This is really something.LOL Its quite creative though and I think if those boys are 'hardcore' as they let others perceive them to be, they just might move to another place, cause that kind of music might cramp their style or something. Well, goodluck to whatever the outcome is of this experiment in keeping unruly teens away.

I wish them luck too. I know I really would not choose to hang out in a place that was piping in Barry Manilow music! Thanks for your comment and have a great day!!!

I could see it mellowing people out who are lingering there. On the other hand, I can see hard core rockers choosing to go hang out elsewhere, for their personal sanity.

That's so true. What would totally make it even more mellow would be artists like Neil Sedaka, Paul Anka, and Michael McDonald! I know for certain I would not want to go to that mall. Now my husband on the other hand... Thanks for your comment and have a great day!!!

Since so many of them carry their own music with them it might not work...but I imagine that they are at the end of their ropes with unruly teens...our mall here has problems too...I seriously doubt it will have an effect but they might as well try!

I would think that Barry Manilow would drive those teens to violence--I know it nearly does that to me! Why don't they arrest the teens?! A day and night in jail would be good for the young hoodlums.

I totally agree about these kids getting arrested or punished or forced to do community service of some type. As far as Barry is concerned I need to have a drink before I can listen to him. Thanks for your comment and have a great day!!!

What? I, for one, love Barry Manilow! It would not deter me from that mall. I can see where young kids might not like it but I bet they will end up with a bunch of senior citizens at the mall now. And Fanilows, like me!
