Walmart is sneaking one past you!

Have you been to Walmart lately? I do most of my shopping there and have noticed something strange going on. In order to save money I like to buy the walmart "great value" brand items when they are available. However, that brand is slowly dwindling away. So, when I want to buy walmart brand margarine, cereal, etc and it is not available I am forced to choose a more expensive brand or go to another store. My husband asked one of the cashiers about the missing products and she said they are phasing them out due to the economy. I am sure my total bill was more expensive due to the lack of store brand products. As for me, I will be spending more money at Aldis in the future. It seems like a silly move for Walmart to cut their own throat. What will you do? Will you buy the name brands or find another store like Target, Aldis, or HyVee that carries a cheaper store brand?

I am at the point where saving is very important. I am pinching pennies, I lost my job. Walmart is making some very bad decision to me. The first one was when they discontinued their lay away plan. Now they a discontinuing their discount brand of products. I haven't been shopping much since the lost of my income but I will be looking for a store than have discount prices.

I think it is a very bad decision too. I know many of my friends buy the Walmart brand whenever they can. I never used the layaway plan, but I know several people who specifically shop at Kmart because of the layaway availability. I think Walmart believes its shoppers will be loyal no matter what.

I never even made that connection between the credit card push when layaway was eliminated. You are absolutely right. I hope people will not fall into the credit trap now that the economy is declining.

I have to pinch my pennies too. I often buy the store brand or the generic brand. They are sometimes made by the same companies as the more expensive brands and are labeled as private label items. There are certain items that I only like the name brand. Many items I have switched over to a store brand because of the cost. If Walmart is cutting these out, I will be looking for an alternative. On many items I will have to look elsewhere or check out my coupon stash. Unfortunately, I will just do without until I find a less expensive alternative. Walmart can't make any money that way. I agree that Walmart is cutting its own throat. I think they have gotten too over confident about their customers. Times are tough all over. A lot of small town stores have closed because of the Super Walmarts. The small stores cannot compete with the prices or selection at larger Super Stores. People can only buy what they can afford. Seems like Walmart is going to cut its own throat.

Isn't it strange? I wonder if it has something to do with what Sndcain said. Maybe they think people will just start charging their groceries just like they have to do with layaway items since layaway is not available. It just does not make sense that if they are needing to whittle down thier inventory, why get rid of their own product? I am much more inclined to shop at a scratch and dent grocery store or another store that has off brands for a cheaper price. Thanks for your response!

I can't believe that Walmart is going to do this to the consumer, especially now that our countrys citizens are having such financial problems. I frequent Walmart's grocery department as I am on an extremely limited budget. To hear that they are phasing out the 'Great Value' brand is most distressing. Like others on this forum, Aldi's is looking pretty good now, as well as other store brands in different stores. It almost feels like they're 'kicking you when you're down!' and don't really care about their customers. Guess just like anything else, they're uncaring, and the $$$ is the bottom line. Here is a link to Walmart's 'contact us' for their corporate offices. Maybe if they receive enough emails stating our dissatisfaction, that they will keep the 'great value' brands in their stores. If you don't take a moment to speak up, they will never know how the public feels! I just sent a letter, why don't you?! http://walmartstores.com/contactus/feedback.aspx

Good idea loved1. I just hate to go from store to store to store trying to get the best deals, even though you can save some money. I developed a medical problem a couple years ago and too much walking really aggrevates it, so I like to be able to do one stop shopping if possible. WalMart is good for that reason. I still find some thing much much cheaper at WalMart than other groceries stores though. We like to drink V8 Splash and it is ususally over $3 at Kroger & is only $1.98 at WalMart. I'm going to start pricing more things so I can see where I can get the best deal. Sometimes we'll buy some items at Big Lots and/or the Dollar Store too. Let me know if you find another place cheaper than WalMart. Hope you have a wonderful weekend! Jill

I know what you mean about one stop shopping. I have a husband and three kids to lug around with me so I want to get it all done at once.

Well that is awful. I hadn't noticed but my wife does most of the shopping. I wonder if they are doing that nationwide. Where are you located? I know we get a lot of Great Value items. Looks Target might be our other option. Hope they don't do the same thing.

I completely understand what you are saying about be a bargain shopper that is exactly how i am but heres a thought. If Wal-mart started making more products wouldn't that have a negative effect on the economy because it could possibly run the other companies out of buisness and there would be more people out of jobs.

I think there are enough people who buy name brand items only that there is no danger of a really big company (like DelMonte or Blue Bonnet) going out of business. I guess time will tell.

We buy store brands most of the time, I guess there will be some changes ahead.

If i have a coupon for a name brand item i will buy it. Other wise i would go to another store where i can get the store brand item. I dont have money to be buying a name. Its just too much now days. My budget is small so i have to get the best deal.

I don't buy name brand things just for the name either. Most of the time the store brand is just as good.

They are doing more then just that..they are mixing regular priced items in with the clearance etc so you think you are getting it cheaper...my friend returned two items they charged her regular price for that was mixed in with clearance items in the last two weeks....I usually shop at Hyvee so I buy their brand. I am lucky I live alone as I can't believe how expensive it is to buy groceries!

Groceries really are expensive, and being a daycare provider I have to buy a ton of extra groceries every week. I really rely on those store brands

I thank shops should provide what people want and if Walmart is pulling a fast one and trying to make people buy more expensive brands, then it's better to shop around

I have already returned to shopping at my local grocery store. I have noticed that they not only have the store brands but they have better sales on them. I have been able to cut my grocery bill by a substancial amount because of this.

It might happen that their brand is faster dissapearing from the same motive-the economy. I know of customers that go very early and buy what's cheaper or on sale, even before the normal crowd wakes up. Don't listen to what cashiers are telling you-they don't know always what's happening in the store. You might ask a CMS to check if they have more of the items you're looking for, in the back... My Walmart has always everything, and lots of products on sale. I enjoy browsing at least once a week and check what else is on sale.

I already thought of that. The thing is, there is no empty spot on the shelf where all of the product has been purchased. The spot has been filled with something else. I still love walmart, but I don't understand why they are discontinuing some of those great value brand products I used to buy every single week.

I also noticed walmart was doing that! No not really! Actually the great value brand items are always in stock here. I'll be watching walmart great value items more closely now.

I have not been to a regular grocery store in about 6 yrs now. I have always shopped at Walmart and I noticed that today too. I am a serious bargain shopper...I mean coupons, lower generic brand prices, etc. Looking for half the things I had on my list today was like finding a needle in a haystack. I am sure we have an Aldi's around here somewhere but I don't know where...I have to look it up. It's embarrassing when you walk into the store with a certain amount of money and are at the cash register and have to take things off your list in order to get out of there. Prices are getting too high now. The economy is suffering because no one can afford the price raise anymore and the minimum wage is apparently going down or whatever.

It would be worth your while to see if you can find an Aldis in your area! I save a ton of money on groceries there. I know what you mean about not having enough money at the register. In my younger days I used to keep a running tally of how much I thought the groceries in the cart would total. Now I buy $400.00 in groceries at a time! If I did not rely on store brands and generics I am sure the bill would be much higher.

I wrote to Walmart corporate offices yesterday and voiced my concern over their discontinuing the Great Value brand. Here is their reply they sent today: Sam Walton built Wal-Mart on a very simple belief--the customer is the boss. That means we are always looking for better ways to serve the people who shop at Wal-Mart. Each comment, concern and suggestion is very important because it gives us the opportunity to improve our overall service. Rest assured that We are not discontinuing the Great Vaue food line from our stores. Thank you for your observations. It is customers like you who help us continue to offer everyday low prices and friendly service. Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.

Why would Walmart want to phase out products that are so popular with so many people? We love the Great Value brand, too. Not only are the products less expensive, but we can't tell the difference from other, more costly brand name items. If we have a choice, we always pick the store brand, because we're in the position so many Americans are finding themselves in these days, that of having to live as cheaply as we possibly can. Obviously Walmart has made their decision for internal reasons, because it's nothing that is going to enhance the shopping experience for consumers. They may well find people going elsewhere for the products they've been buying at their store. Too bad!

I never shop in one place for all of my needs. I found that every store has some cheap products to attract customers, but everything else is more expensive. On my way back home I may stop in many locations to buy what I want. This way I save on my trip and money. I am not loyal customer to any specific store, I buy in many places and only items that I want to buy. I have been in Costo and Sams Club once and I spend more money that I would in other places. Buying in bulk is not working for me. I eat mostly raw food and I found one local store with the best prices for fruits and veggie.

I use alot of coupons, so with my coupons the walmart brand is costing me more than a name brand. Most of the walmart brand items have gone up to the price of a name brand here at my local walmart, so i wind up actually saving money and headaches, because i can find the brand names.

I too noticed this shocking marketing 'technique' of theirs. I usually just got to other stores because they sometimes offer better prices. BETTER PRICES THAN WALMART. I once heard from a friend that Walmart's prices were so low because they were trying to urge other companies to follow the same ritual of 'always low prices.' This was only because Walmart was trying to run those companies out of business while they would still flourish in the end. But now that they are having disappearing, cheaper brands, their motto is shamed by the very company that brought about its existence. Walmart is now hypocritical, with its previous actions, but I hope that they will figure a way around it. Then customers will feel more comfortable going there and it will be right back on track.
