they say that one of our duties as adults/ parents/ older sisters or brothers is to encourage our younger counterparts to read. but are you doing it? if your child is watching tv most of the time, do you actually encourage him/ her to read a book instead? do you believe that compared to tv, there is more growth in books? have you actively encouraged the children around you to read more?

I do encourage those around me to read and not just the kids. I buy books that I think they may enjoy and give my old books to friends and family. I know that reserch shows that when you watch TV your brain becomes inactive where as you have to think to read. I can't imagine my life without books and so I try to help those around me to enjoy it the way I do.

i feel the same way! i feel that if someone doesn't love reading, he's missing out on a lot! i can never compare that feeling i get when i'm so into a book and i lose track of time. it's like i'm trasnported to another world and i didn't even notice! it's nice that you're "cycling" your books. it's nice to have a circle of friends who also love reading. that way, you can borrow from each other. ^_^

I am a big advocate of reading. My son is 12 now, but when he was in the 1st grade, he read the first Harry Potter book, in the 2nd grade, he read 2 and 3, and then 4 over that summer. Since then he has really taken a love to reading. He just finished Old Yeller for a book report in school, it was suppsed to take him 2 weeks, but he read it in one day, then wrote the report the next day. Now my girls are 3 and 4, I am working on letter recognition and phonics right now. I hope they love reading as much as my son and I do.

yes, i hope they do, too. it's wonderful to love books. you get engrossed in a book for hours on end, discovering new things, following a story, leaving your seat without even realizing it. i'm glad your kids seem to be taking to books. they must be very smart. it really helps if the parents are readers themselves. ^_^
