Can you sleep soundly if you do not feel safe? I can't. I toss and turn. I will wake up several times. In the morning, I will still be tired because I did not get a good night's rest. So what about you? Are you able to sleep soundly when you don't feel safe??

I know that when I try to sleep, I toss and turn. I can't sleep soundly. I might be able to rest a little but not actually sleep.

Hello royal52gens IF you sure the environment is not safe, then I am 100% that I can't sleep soundly. I remembered I had slept over in my auntie's home 5 years ago, I couldn't sure if there was safe or not, I just couldn't sleep. I was so tried those few days, as I couldn't sleep well.

I would be very tired also if I did not sleep well for several days. I have experienced that insecure feeling sometimes when I am traveling and spending nights in motels. Sometimes I am comfortable and sometimes I am not. It is probably because it is not home.

The only way I may feel unsafe is when I have to sleep in public place, like train, airplane, boat.... At home i always feel safe, my dogs are making noise if something is going on. Do you have any reason to feel unsafe?

I don't know that I have a particular reason to feel unsafe but ocassionally, I don't feel secure. I have the dogs here and I know they will go into a protective mode if needed.

NO,i can not sleep soundly if i feel unsafe, because in this case,my mind would be full of fear, but i have a good way to manage to sleep, that is keep the eyes open and do no blink,i will be very tired after a time period, then i would not wake up until the next morning.

At least you have a plan of action. Keeping my eyes open and not blinking for a long time is not something I would be able to do. I might stay awake during the time that I feel fear and then sleep later. But like you, When I do sleep, I would sleep for a long time to make up for the sleep that was lost.

Although I live in a very safe and close neighborhood, when my husband is not home at night I do not sleep as soundly. I still feel safe I just listen for the bumps in the night like he normally would. But my dogs do not sleep well at all if Daddy is not home. They bark at every little thing. I do not know if they are hoping that it is him, or if they are trying to keep me safe by barking.

I agree. When you are used to things being a certain way when you sleep and then there is a change, it does affect how you sleep. Dogs are very sensitive to changes also. It may be hard for them to sleep when your husband is away.

I think having a sound sleep in an unsafe place is hardly possible rather impossible. So no question of waking up for me.

Maybe a twilight sleep would be possible. But I would wake up at every little sound. I would also toss and turn a lot. It would not be a good way to get some good rest.

hmm.. what sort of circumstances do you mean unsafe? if i'm feeling unsafe, i doubt i'd even sleep a wink. i'd huddle one corner and keep my eyes WIDE open to the threat (be it seen or unseen).

If you read some of my discussions in the Addiction Recovery interest group, you would come to understand that many people do not feel safe for a variety of reasons. It comes from growing up with insecurity and a fear of the unknown future. The unknown can be emotional, financial, personal safety, etc. If you have a lot on your mind, are you able to rest or does your mind try to sort it out? But for this discussion, I left it open to: anytime a person feels unsafe, are they able to sleep?

No, I would be quite difficult for to sleep if I don't feel safe. But somehow if I manage to get into sleep then I would not wake up until the morning no matter what happens. Once me and my friend had to stay in a lonely old palace. It was in a village and the whole area around it was covered with large trees and bushes and it was quite frightening. At first I though that I'd not be able to sleep there and so did my friend. But somehow I got into sleep and I think that the most peaceful sleep I ever had. But my friend was too much scared and he could not sleep that night. Late he told me that he tried to wake me up several times but I didn't.. lol..
