would you go back and pay?

I treated my family to lunch. It was a pretty expensive place and we all had fun. I always keep the receipt as a souvenir. When I got home, I checked the receipt again and found out that one of us got a free meal - as I said, it was a pretty expensive place. I'm wondering if our waiter would be reprimanded by the manager by deducting the price of the meal from his salary... If you were me, would you go back (on another day of course), go up the manager and say that you're there to pay for a meal that they forgot to charge you?

That's one out of four that has tried to convince me to go back... I'm still thinking about it.

I do feel luck - but I also wonder if the waiter who attended to our table was being unlucky because of me.

I think I would let it go. Not that I would try to be dishonest, but usually the total of the receipts are what is calculated at the end of the day. I do not think restaurants scan the receipts to tally each individual meal. As long as the register matches the receipts everything is okay. I do not think the waiter would be reprimanded.

Here is an opportunity to be honest and set a good example. Ask yourself how you would feel if this happened to you. Wouldn't you want the person to be honest and come forward? I find in my life that when I am honest, good things come to me.

When I think about it, I don't think anybody would come buy and pay for something that I missed (if I were the server). It was kind of my negligence. And seriously, I don't think anything special has ever happened to my when I'm being honest -___-

It may not come to you in the same way that you gave it. I have felt so good when my daughter is honest because of the example I set for her. I believe sometimes people are honest with me in social situations and tell me things I really should not know because I have been honest somewhere in the past. The information helps me to get through a situation more easily. I must admit that sometimes it is very hard to be honest. If the person won't take it back there is not much you can do other than maybe try to treat someone else to a lunch or something.

I really do not know if i will go back and pay... since doing that will be a hassle for me... and for sure the waiter and cashier will be reprimanded for the mistake... so... i would really have to think hard if i will do that or not...

Technically, it's not just one person getting a free meal because I paid for the whole thing :P It's just that one order wasn't counted. They must have missed it.

The right thing to do would be to go back and pay. But in these hard times and the fact this place was not cheap I would just let it go. Next time you go there give a big tip to your waiter or waitress that way you can get another free meal.

Actually this situation happened to me last February 14 when we had dinner in one of the restaurants here. Since that restaurant charge a very high amount of service fee, we did not go back to pay them the missed computation of our meal. It is their duty to recheck the amounts before giving the chits to costumers so it is not your fault if that things happen.

I've never done anythng but restaurant work and i've never been penalized for even big mistakes. Don't worry about the waiter...he'll be fine. The only thing that will happen is food cost might be a little off, but they can deal. Trust me, I was a restaurant mgr for years. If I were you and had noticed it when the check came to the table then I would have said something...it was an honest mistake on all sides. Maybe tip really good next time. =)

Ever since I started earning for myself, I made it a point to leave a proper tip everytime I go out especially if the service is good - even though I've already paid for a Service Charge :D Thank you for your response! I think now I've totally made up my mind :D

Well this question is right up my ally because I work in a restruant. I would have to say no, I would not go back and try to pay for the meal. I know that may sound like I'm being dishonest, but I also know that as a server, if it brought to the attention of management in a restaurant it may make the server pay. If Management starts auditing your checks, you could lose your job, and that's not cool, either. I would chalk this one up as being lucky, but in the future, you should always look over your check before you pay it!

Sounds good... But you did mention that someone might lose a job because of it, shouldn't I worry about that? I think it's a pretty good restaurant and I don't think they'd let go of someone that easily though..

Chances are, it was a freebie due to the size of the party. But it's true - chances are, the waiter has covered it over if it was a mistake. Restaurants are busy places and I doubt very much that each bill is scrutinised that closely - so long as the amount in the till matches the final tally on the receipts everything is okay. It's not like a shop where everything is itemised. There's no bar code on a curried chicken leg, or the legs on a seating arrangement for that matter! If you go back and bring it up, the management will realise something is amiss, and maybe you'll get that waiter into trouble. You'll do more harm than good by going back. Don't make ripples - leave it.

Maybe nah. hehe. It wasn't mah fault anyway. I wouldn't gonna waste gasoline for that. And if the waiter would be reprimanded, then it is his consequence for not paying much attention with what he is doing.

I would go back, simply because it's the right thing to do. Yes it was their fault that they missed it, but that doesn't mean you can't be honest. Often times this has happened to me in stores, I find that I got several bags of stuff for free. In that case I usually call the manager first, and tell him I accidentally got things for free. Sometimes he asks me to come back and pay for it, and I do, and sometimes he says just keep it and thanks for telling us. Of course a restaurant is very different from a store, and a waiter is very different from a cashier, but don't both of them deserve equal kindness and generosity? Personally I couldn't live with myself knowing I got a free meal accidentally, let alone at an expensive place. But of course I'm not you, so you make your own choices; though I would at least call the manager.

Calling the manager would kind of mean like sealing the deal...what if they never saw the discrepancy? Then calling him actually puts somebody in trouble? ...or am I just making up excuses for myself?

Wow... how did they even know that the same guy was the guy who didn't pay for that meal if they didn't charge it beforehand? Receipts have dates. And if the receipt was given today and it had 2 meals in it but they only served one, then the guy could have complained...

They already know, or they will next time they check their system. Small stores may miss things like that, as will fast food palces, and even some small restaurants; but from the sounds of it this was a pretty big business restaurant, and they have systems in place to catch that sort of thing. Often times it will even record who didn't pay, and make them pay next time they go there. I know this for a fact, it happened to a friend of mine pretty recently; he forgot to pay for his part of the meal, and a few weeks later when he went back the system made him pay for both meals. The way I see it, if they already know, you might as well make yourself look better and YOU be the one to tell them, instead of the system telling them and having them think badly of you. And I wouldn't worry to much about the waiter, mistakes happen and most restaurant employers are pretty forgiving. A for making up excuses, It's not my place to judge lol; though I know I catch myself doing it a lot in daily life...

I would do that, and infact I did too, I had purchased somethings from the bakery and the guy packed a loaf and didn;t add any charge for it so I went back the next day and paid for it. In Sikkim you find many people doing so as for lepchas they pride themselves for their honesty. I am not a lepcha but still it feel undignified to cheat people who are so honest. I was buying flowers, the shopkeeper refused to sell me a particular bunchI wanted saying its already bloomed and wont even last a day I should go for a fresh one, which will last for atleast fifteen days. I could not tell the difference but she did. It amazed me so much and taught me a thing or two too.

Well if its pretty expensive and I got one free meal, I wouldn't go back not unless one of my family got sick with their food. It seldom happen so better take the advantage. Regarding the waiter, don't worry... he has learned a lesson from that and he will be more careful next time.

I think that I would most likely go back and pay. If it's a sit down restaurant that is not associated with fast food in anyway then I think the rules would be as you said, they'd have to pay out of their own pockets. He might have had to pay that night out of tips, who knows, but if you go back and tell the restaurant then maybe the server will get his money refunded to him, after all it's a simple mistake.

A friend of mine wons a restaurant and last year I managed the office for several months while he was out of the country. Even if the server missed it, the management or the owner is going to go through the tickets and check each one because that is what they do. Some are better at checking on this than others ut most will because it is one they can check to see how honest their employees are. Everything that is ordered must go on a ticket and therefore goes through the kitchen and there will be an accounting of everything served. If there is a mistake, that mistake will be detected and the management will notify the server and the server will pay because it was their mistake. Usually if something has been left off of your check total or is given to you as complimentary the server will let you know an adjustment has been made to your bill. If there is no indication on the bill that you received a discount it may have been the server's error and the matter has already been resolved. If the restaurant is someplace you frequent with any regularity and you know who your server was you can always reimburse the server on your next visit if this would make you feel better about the situation. If you attempt to return the money to the restaurant there is no guarantee the server will get it. Of course policies are different from one place to another and the restaurant where you had your meal may do things differently.
