Pet Rats Cage

I have 2 female rats, we are planning on building a mansion of a cage for them. I know you are not suppose to have cedar or pine, but are there any other woods that can harm them? We were thinking birch. Also, is there any toys they like? We noticed they love ping pong balls but we cannot keep them in the cage because we are afraid they will eventually bite through them (we noticed some teeth marks on them) and swallow some plastic. We made them some hammocks witch they loved until my boyfriend hung a t-shirt over there cage and now they prefer the new fort they created by pulling the shirt through the cage. Any ideas for toys we should add to the mansion? the chew toys seem so boring to them, even though they do use them. Also, any advice on building the cage? We also need a creative nonslip way of making ramps.

Oh my god, I love this question. First of all, any hard wood is perfect. Oak, birch, hickory. But, I am going to stop you right here from buying wood. Go and get a nice sturdy hard wood bookcase. Cut holes in the shelves. Make little ramps for them. Go get some cotton tow rope ( make sure it's cotton not nylon) instead of a ramp, use a rope for one shelf and so on. Toys : anythign that won't poison them. For instance, as an alternative to the whole ping pong balls, try unshelled walnuts. My rats use to love trying to break those darn things apart. As for non-slip ramps. I have the perfect solution. Go to the hardware store and find a clear epoxy paint. Ask someone there to help you find the right thing. You really want epoxy because it's hard as rock after you use it and once dry it becomes inert and can't hurt the ratties. So on any ramp just paint it with a thin layer of the epoxy and then take some medium grit sand and pour it all over the ramp. Let it dry and presto. This can actually be done to the entire cage but the grit can make it hard to clean up. I would however cover all of the wood inside the bookcase with a thick thick thick layer of the epoxy paint and let it dry smooth. This will assist in cleaning. The sand ramps will also help aid in filing down your rat's toenails which is sooooooo great and they will love you forever. I want to see pics of your rats. I love rats. I have a bunny now so no rats while he is here. He got soooo mad at them all of the time. here is a link to an amazing site that will give you loads of ideas. www.dapper.com it's all about super fuzzy sweet little ratties. good luck with your mansion. oh and bookcases are not the only thing that works, I've even seen one built from an upright shower. You wouldn't believe how easy that was to clean. But, I'll be damned if any rat is taking over my entire bathroom lol.
