How long would you wait in the doctor's office?

I had a doctor's appointment after work last night and I was sitting there wondering - how long will I wait today? After all sometimes the wait is two minutes and sometimes it's twenty-two minutes. The last time I was there I had to wait for almost an hour. I actually was about to leave when the doctor came in and apologized to me. I understand that they want to give patients as much personal attention as possible, but my time is valuable also. The longest I have ever waited was two hours and by that time my blood pressure was through the roof! Of course they wanted to keep me longer because my pressure was abnormally high. I explained as patiently as possible that the wait caused my pressure to increase. They caused the problem! So how long would you wait for an appointment? Would you have waited those two hours or would you have left? I'd love to hear from you...

Thanks for the compliment! I try to be a patient person but I think that this waiting is just too much for me. We all have busy schedules and can't be held for so long. Thanks for the response!

when I made the medical examinations at the most I have waited 1' minutes, only the dentist a few unexpected I had to wait a little longer, but never 2 hours!. I believe that to wait for a lack of professionalism, once it can happen but if it becomes the norm, not just apologiza to your patient. I suggest you change doctors and to rely on a more professional.

I have heard that suggestion before that I should change doctors. I do have to become more proactive because my time has become more scarce lately. Thanks for the response!

Hello Deejean, Twenty minutes -- that's it. Any longer and I get up and tell the receptionist that I will wait no longer, the turn around and walk out the door. I would gladly drive 100 miles away to see a professional that respects my time. In all fairness, before I agree to any appointment with any professionals I always share my 'tweny minute rule' with them, and explain that in return, I will never make anyone wait longer than twenty minutes for me. By being forthcoming, I empower such proffessionals to either accept my business or say "No thanks". This goes for all professionals who I travel to see. If they travel to my home (like cable tv installer etc...) I will set the appointment up with a two hour window, and the caveat that I will bill the provider if kept waiting any longer than that. This spares us all the fury over having been disrespected by another. 'Cause that's what it really is, a matter of respect -- be it mutual or one-sided. I tend to stick with the mutual. Your blood pressure story is a perfect example. Of course they caused your BP to spike because they were disrespecting you. Incidentally, before I came up with the notion of sharing my 'twenty minute rule', I was kept waiting an inordinate amount of time by a doctor. I sent that doctor a bill for MY TIME, which wasn't well recieved at all. If more people did just that, I believe that we'd start to see some respect and real customer service returned to commerce!

Hello Lady! Thank you so much for sharing your experiences and your advice for the future. The funny part is that I am always so hung up on getting to an appointment on time so that I don't inconvenience someone else by my tardiness. However I would be much more relaxed if I knew that I was going to be waiting for so long. However after reading your response, my attitude has changed. I will not get upset or have my blood pressure spike - I'll just calmly let them know I am waiting no longer as per my twenty minute rule! Thanks for the awesome advice!

Hello Deejean, I will share with you that the first couple of times you announce your "Twenty Minute Rule" over the phone with an appointment setting staffer, that you will most likely catch some 'attitude'. It's rather like ... "how dare you ... such arrogance". Then, at some point they will 'get it'; 'it' being the mutual respect thing, and they'll back off -- a bit. Being committed to this personal policy offers a unique glimpse into the Human Species, and its strange and sometimes surreal perceptions of personal worth (the professionals, yours, and most interestingly the appointment setter). The silver lining is that after demanding mutual respect, it does tend to be offered by those professionals who agree to your 20 Minute Rule. They may not like your rule, but most will respect that you live by your principles. 'Course, you don't ever be more than 20 minutes late yourself!

because of ontario's (canada)'free' healthcare, you tend to wait for at least an hour during the winter because of colds/flus etc, so that really is nothing. i once had to wait at an allergists and the girls at the desk forgot me! (and my appointment - i sure wasnt happy!) i usually end up waiting for an hour most of the time.

You are so patient and obviously better than me - I don't have it in me to wait for an hour anymore. I get upset too quickly. I think this is part of the reason why we don't want such a healthcare system in the US. Thanks for the response!

I would wait for an hour the most even though thats why I would bring my ipod with me since it would make waiting a hell of a lot easier for me. But luckly the longest I ever had to wait for a doctor was only 30 min. Usally there pretty fast and dont get delayed.

You're smart to bring something with you so that the wait doesn't seem too long. I really should take your advice and have an ipod or book with me. Thanks for the response.

I don't like to wait at the Dr's office either, but when I was pregant and waiting to see the Dr. for my obgyn appointments, I would often wait longer than an hour. Sometimes, the Dr. would fall behind or some other obstacle got in the way. Many times the receptionist would inform me that the Dr. was running behind schedule and if I would like to come back after a certain amount of time. I really appreciated that because as you mentioned, our time is valuable to us as well. We have things that we have to do, or maybe we are trying to fit the appointment in during our lunch hour. I have done that many times with a dentist appointment. In all honesty, if I had the extra time, I would wait an hour before trying to reschedule the appointment.

It's funny that you said that - when I was pregnant I hardly had to wait at all. It was like I was in the fast lane for everything. It was great! I had superhuman abilities - the ability to be called by the doctor immediately! However now that the baby is out and about, I'm just a regular person again and I'm back to waiting an hour or so. You are very lucky that the receptionist would tell you when the doctor is running late and you could reschedule. It's just difficult because I am trying to juggle the baby and a job. Thanks for sharing!

hi deejean06 :) with my own experience when am preggy that time (for almost 2 hours..the OB is so brilliant and i can't find of any OB that is good as she does ;)) buy anyways i surpassed those days already LOL and until now am experiencing it haha-with my son's pedia. yes and everytime we go to that clinic i should allot my whole day for that before i go for half day at work but when we had this experience of waiting for almost 3-4 hours (am not exaggerating but it's true :D) the pedia is so nice and after some hop in coz my child can't get along well with his previous pedias/drs. we have to stay with his doctor now- there's no problem with me i have a very long patience in regards of everything (patience is a virtue right? ;)) but with my baby and my hubby as well they can't stand for waiting long hours, but i already have a remedy here we'll just register first and look on what number are we and if it's like we're on 20s :D we will go malling first and estimate the time if we think that we're next on the line (mall is just walking distance from the clinic so no worries at all ;) thanks for this one!:) happy myLotting! Godabless!0=)

Hi myra...You have an extraordinary amount of patience to wait hours for the doctor! Thanks so much for the response.

At my surgery the wait can be long. Sometimes the doctors get called out to the hospital or they are just running behind. The time slot for an appointment is ten minutes. But there have been times when I have ben suffering badly with my depression and I have been sat in the doctors office for almost an hour. When I came out it was to many angry faced people! Having been there I understand that sometimes people need that extra time and I just patiently wait my turn. If I need to see a doctor I will wait as long as I need to.

Hi mummyofthree and thank you for sharing the other side of the story. I should have more patience because I never know when someone else badly needs the doctor more than I do on any given day. Thanks for your response.

Hi, deejean06! I am sorry for your wait! Well, if I have another appointment that I had to go to, or somewhere that I had to be, then I would not wait. I would go up front and tell them that I don't have time to wait and that I would like to reschedule. And if I have time to wait and there is nothing else to do, then I will just sit and wait it out. Sometimes, I can be very patient. But, if I am in pain or bleeding, I will not wait two hours. I will leave.

The longest I have had to wait to see my GP was around 1 hour. I was pretty annoyed at having to wait that long but then I had taken time off other stuff so I just waited until I could be seen. Had I have walked away I would have ended up wasting the entire day. It is annoying isn't it?

Yes it is annoying - that's the perfect description! That's what I don't want to do - reschedule and then have to wait all over again... Thanks for the response!

I only go if I'm sick. Sometimes I've had to wait a long time. Like I was supposed to go in at 11pm, but I don't get in till she's finished seeing regular patients who have appointments. So I get in after 5 pm. I hate that, but it's not like I can predict when I'm going to be sick and make the appointment ahead of the day!

But wouldn't that be great - predicting when you would get sick so you are guaranteed to have an appointment! Thanks for the response!

I cant wait in a hospital for more than half an hour. i kind of hate hospitals a lot. i just dont like its smell, and those medicines at all. but unfortunately most of the time you will find me there. though these days i have stopped going at all, even if i am not well. because i just dont like that place at any cost.its too irritating for me. and 2 hours is out of question for me.lol

I would never wait two hours again, believe me. But I don't think that I would just stay away like you're doing - I hope you're ok and not just staying away because you don't like hospitals. I have never met a person who does like going to the doctor for any reason. After all the reasons for going to the doctor are because you're ill or you'd like to prevent illness. It's never pleasant. Thanks for sharing!

It depends...if I really need to see the doctor then I wait for as long as the doctor arrives. But if its not that important, then fifteen minutes would be max.
