The only thing I hate about my computer is that is suddenly shuts down for seemingly no reason and without warning. I have run virus checker and there are no problems with it. Does this happen to anybody else? Specs: Windows XP Professional, SP3, running on a Compaq nw8000 laptop.

Mostly virus are the causes for such sudden shut down of computer. You install some other anti virus software and scan in safe mode and you may find some virus. It the anti virus software is not able to find any virus, you reinstall the OS.

I use the Symantec Endpoint Protection, and have done full scans on it, so far no virus detected. I have considered reinstalling the OS, hopefully I will not have to go to that extreme. Thanks for your response.

your labtop sounds to me like it is overheating. you should go to the closest comp store and get a labtop fan that you can put under your labtop to cool it.

There is a good possibility that is happening, and I will probably try to set up fan soon. However, this has been happening only in the last few months, but I have had the laptop for about 8-9 months. Thanks for your response.

Your problem looks like hardware problem. It is not the software problem .Throughly check your laptop ram at any service center. If there is problem with ram it shutdowns your system when it it is heatd up.Put your system under hybernate mode. Actually it has to be hybernated when there is any battery power shotage to the laptop.Check whether battery is correctly contacting or not.
