Why do we need to take in food supplements?

Eversince I was a child, my mother always tells me to take my vitamins. She said it helps me grow taller and stronger. I have a good appetite but i can't imagine why we need to take more supplements eventhough your doing good in choosing a healthy diet. There are so many food supplements now in the market, all of them offer good effects and they can be either herbal or natural, some are artificially formulated too. Do you take some too? If yes, why,...?

Hi, No.I donot take neither advocate for any additional "Nutritional Supplement". Nature has given us all,what we need is little knowledge about the essentials needed for us,supplied by the specific food & plan a balaced Diet-chart comprising of those.Then, u will be not the victim of Unawareness/marketing gimmicks of those additional nutrition-providers(Food supplements). =Lahiri,Kolkata,India.

I do take supplements, and add things to my diet. I stay away from the ones that are artificially formulated. With all the genetically modified food out their now, how can we know what we are eating, and they put so much chemicals on and in our food how can you tell what nutrients you are getting. Salba is one thing that i add to my diet every day, I also take coq10 everyday, plus a few other things. Every time that the doctors try to put me on prescription medication I check around for a natural way to do it. They tried to put me on stuff for high blood pressure and high cholesterol, but i lowered both my self with out the medicine. Last year i was told that i am diabetic, they put me on insulin, and pills, I had no choice because i was in the hospital, but as soon as i got home i started looking around for what to do naturally, and i have kept it low with a little supplementation, a change to my diet, and exercise.

To fix the nutrients in our body we need certain precursors which are found only in plants.Maybe in this regard supplements synthetic supplements are not too useful.Taking phytonutrients can be helpful.I take Amways daily and protein powder from amways because it has phytonutrients.
