I just watched a TV program from" morning America" that a woman managed to spend 1 dollar per day and lost 8 pounds of her weight though she didn't mean to lose weight. She showed us how to eat healthy and cheap. of course no one really need to do this, but she set an example for us to spend money wisely under such tough situation. for example, 100% Whole-Wheat Bread, bought at a bakery out let is less than $2/loaf. Using 2 pieces for a sandwich provides 8 grams protein, and 6 grams fiber. This means the price of a 2 piece serving is about 30 cents. How low can you minimum your daily expense on eating ?

I can buy whole wheat flour, use my breadmaker, and make 100% whole wheat bread WITHOUT the chemicals and preservatives used in commercially made bread for much less than $2/loaf - and my bread will be fresh and not the day-old stuff sold in bakery outlets. The best way to learn to maximize your food dollars is to talk to the older people who lived through the depression. In those times, many of the types of commercially prepared and packaged foods that we have today were non-existent. The more that you can "cook from scratch", the more money you will save, and you will eat healthier as well. Just as an example, with 2 eggs, 2 cups of flour, a little salt and a little water, you can make a batch of homemade noodles - they're not frozen, not dried, don't contain preservatives, and cost almost nothing!

Fluffy.... depends on what kind of noodles you are making. To make spaghetti or egg you can use a pasta machine, or just take a rolling pin and roll the dough out by hand and cut it by hand with a pizza cutter to your desired size. Let them dry if you wish or just put them in a pot of boiling water when they float to the top they are done. Hope that helps...

I would love to know how to make noodles. I imagine you could use wheat flour, as well, to make wheat noodles? Sounds simple enough, but I wonder how you shape them.

Wow! If it was just me I could probably survive on less than a £1 a day! With the kids though it costs me a little bit more. When money is really tight I will go without to make sure that the children have enough.

I think all good moms like Mummy would go with out to make sure the lil ones have enough especially when your budget is exceptionally tight that week or so.

Maybe you could share some of the healthy ideas other than bread for her doing $1.00 a day. Problem I find is that most of your UNhealthy foods are the cheaper ones, so if you eat cheaply , you may not eat good for you things! I thought it funny that they recently did a research and found that lower income people had more weight problems, well duh!! What you can afford on little is usually junk food and cheap fast food!

it depends on my energy consumption. if i have loads of work to do i need to eat in full. but if my work is not that heavy i would settle to a vegie diet. anyways, it will be someone's choice to eat alot or not to eat.

I know I was thinking I missed watching something this morning.... GRRRR. To lower you daily expense I'd assume you'd have to eliminiate snacking, eat smaller meals, stretch food you already have, skip a meal, buy sale items only & do some big coupoining. Somehow I don't think we could survive on just $1 a day for food, maybe $2-3 per person depending on what meal is being served. I can do fine on a pbj or toast for breakfast and the same for lunch and then a decent dinner for my family.

You can do it, if it's a matter of survival ya know? Like that can of soup, if you read it, it probably says there's atleast 2 servings in there. Though it doesn't fill you up like 2+/- servings that's for sure.

That's really pretty tight. It would be $7.00 a week. There must not be a lot of variety in the menu, and I suppose its pretty much sandwiches three times a day. Survival yes, but I wouldn't want to have to do it.

I've had to do it to survive when I was in college and yes it is rough trying to get by on just peanut butter & jelly sandwiches or skipping meals all togeather. Sad thing is we've been teetering the cusp of living like that again but this time I have a family.

My fiance and I do not pay for our own food except on occasion. We are lucky to live with his parents who understand that the economic situation is causing us to not find work, and they accept that we do what we can online. I think that if we had to we could spend very little on food a day, and even just not spend anything at all if we stock up on things. His parents do this, although we also eat out a good amount of the time. I think that it's amazing what this woman did, and it really does set an example.

we have a family of 4 and while i dont think that i could survive on a dollar per day but we are certainly very thrifty when it comes to shopping and eating. i make soups quite a bit during the winter as well as home made bread. my mother in law gives us bologna (its in a long and thick tube) so i will fry that and make mac and cheese. you have to be creative these days.

I seen something similiar to this and I'll be darned if I remember if it was a show or a news clip. I think it was the latter. Anyway, this couple, both were teachers and decided to both together live on $30 a month. What they did was bought 50 lbs. of oatmeal, the same for dried beans, and rice, then large quantities of peanutbutter and jelly a bread. They had the oatmeal for breakfast, plain with no milk, sugar, ect. One peanutbutter and jelly sandwich each for lunch, and beans and rice for supper. They lost alot of weight, learned they could do it, but didn't reccomend people doing it because of various health factors, not a "complete" nutrious diet, and just a bad idea. They have a website, I don't remember the name of it, I'll have to see if I can find it. This was several months ago. But they started this blog/website and did logins explaining how they felt as each week went by, tip on how to save, and I think their going to write a book. Well, off searching I'll go and I'll post the website if I find it. Have a good day.

I guess if you really try you could lower your daily food expense. My boyfriend and I have talked about trying to lower our food costs. We thought about spending only 8 dollars a day. I know we have not done it yet but we might next month. I know food is not cheap but I am kinda of a picky eater so I will really have to find foods that I like. I know if you try you can lower your budget so thanks for sharing this and happy mylotting to you tudors,

right, it's just a program and i don't think people can do it for long, but it surely set a good example for people to cut down their unnecessary expenses. besides, i'm very picky on food and almost everything

hmmm, for the whole week that's 7€ but i don't think so that it will be okay for me alone. i think losing weight is not good for me. we used to eat 3 times a day in the Philippines. So, i can't survive with it.

i don't veiw this as a healthy lifestyle, it is too little for any of us to survive, also will bring lots of diseases, like frequent dizziness, lacking of concentration, etc. under this tough situation, we can manage our life in a better way, for instance, we can cut down the budget on clothes or travelling

i could and do definitely go low but this woman was eating super healthy. i am too picky to eat some of the stuff she eats. she lost weight because of the grains and stuff she was eating. like i said, i can stretch a dollar really well when it comes to groceries and meal prep but i won't eat just anything because it is cheap!

I have a small stomach and am already very thrifty, but i suppose I could cut down on visiting the bakery for dessert. I almost always find some overpriced slice of cake or pie that does nothing for me nutritionally, and instead siphons away money that i could spend buying greater quantity healthy foods.

Wow, I hope I never have to find out but it might be interesting to try it sometime. Maybe when I am feeling adventurous I will try it out and see how I do. I love to see how cheap I can live even if I dont need to live that cheap. I will try it when I am not having a crazy month.

If I had to. So long as you work it like you should. Even in this country the USA I feel you could if you really want to conserve your resources if need be. I know some may feel no way, but I think if you have to, you could.

i tend to spend about 100 dollars for the month on groceries. However I do things liek grow my own garden and share the cost of a butchering a steer or pig with my parents and then dont have to pay store prices for meat. I do go out for dinner on occasion but i try to keep that to a minimum.

Wow! That's great! When money was truly tight for me that's when I lost the most too... I should look at the grocery budget and see where we could cut back - maybe I'll lose weight too!

I'm guessing this enterprising young lady did not include rent or a house payment in that dollar, did she? $1 a day? heck yeah.. in college I ate on less. Peanut butter, popcorn, bread, ramen noodles, canned veggies... you discover quickly where the free jelly packets and cream cheese are in town.. not to mention ketcup. Free stuff is so awesome! And how to use coupons on double days for cheap cereal. 1 person can eat healthfully on $30 a month... it's just not a real exciting diet.
