giving chewing gum to kids

I dont understand why parents buy their kids as young as 6 chewing gum, how does a child that young understand you can chew this sweet but not swallow it... Its so dangerous for children, they can choke for a start. My cousins friend was about 16 at the time and she was chewing gum on a bus and the bus when over a bump the chewing gum got stuck in her throat and she died, so why do parents let their kids have chewing gum if this is a risk, its so irresponsible and asking for trouble.

I have a 2 year old daughter that chews gum. And no she dose not swallow it. She understand that it is something just to chew on and when she is done she will bring it to me and I throw it away. I watch her very carefully when she chews gum. And its never a long thing maybe like 5-10 and she is done with it I do not feel it is irresponsible for the parent to give their kids gum but its irresponsible for not watching a child while they are chewing the gum! I never let my daughter jump around or nothing like that while chewing gum she is usally sitting right on my lap while doing so.

Well I don't think there is a problem with chewing gum, but they have to be atleast 8 years old. Most kids by then will surely understand that you just chew gum and not swallow it. However, even if you do swallow it by accident or something, nothing is going to happen, lot's of people swallow it, and even though it can get bad for you, swallowing two or three shouldn't affect things.

Yes I do agree with you it is very irresponsible to give young children chewing gum. They don't realise that it not to be swallowed. Or as you say it can be swallowed accidentally and can have a terrible outcome.

I don't understand this either. I think it is dangerous. When I was growing up with my sisters, my mother gave a quater of the stick of gum to each of them and the other half to me. I guess doing that isn't as bad, but it still is a risk.

I agree that chewing gum is very dangerous for everyone and most especially children. I also do not understand why parents would buy their children chewing gum knowing that there is a good possibility that they could choke. I know I certainly wouldn't buy chewing gum for any child that I know. To be perfectly honest I really don't know what the purpose of chewing gum is anyway. If it is for breath control then one could easily use a spray mouth wash or breath freshener lozenges when they are out and when at home mouthwash will do the trick. There are many places in the World that you can not even buy chewing gum just because it makes a mess when people do not dispose of it properly!

Hello OConnell87 I did not give chewing gum to my kids at 6 yrs. old. I'm afraid of it like you did. I dont want my kids to suffer consequences of eating gums. Im so careful of food when about young kids. I prefer a nutritious food for her to eat than chewing gums. Thats their choice of teaching their kids to taste it.
