I work for a store that when an item goes to a penny or we arent going to sell the item anymore, we just throw it out to the dumpster. or if an item is missing a small part or has a small tear or crack, we throw it away instead of offering these items to a discount or donating to the church or food pantry. I asked my boss why can't we do that, she said its company policy. They claim it has a lost and still get the credit for it, so why not donate it and claim it, Either way they aren't losing out..its the people who could use it that is losing out. Why are companies doing this? I know its not just the company I work for but others as well. Either way they will get their money for it, whether they donate or sell at a discount, but no, they rather throw it away, and good items too with nothing wrong with them, like laundry soap, dishpans, brooms, etc, to name a few. I want to know why this is so and why can't they donate, Why do they have to throw it away for people to dumpster dive? Yes, I've seen a few do it.... Its sad if you ask me?

i worked a popular department store in the region KMART and they used to burn items when they got to a penny as a write off as you stated. When i asked i was told they used to throw them in the dumpster but them people where showing up trying to return them for a credit. Which is why they stopped donating to the salvation army before that. You are right they should do something but i understand their position as well.

I understand their position too, but if you don't have a receipt, then you can't return it. Now adays, who would return the items for prices are so high that its better off to keep the item. I still think they should donate but put a mark or something on the package so that they know it was donating and can't be returned. And when they throw the items out, it comes out of our computer so it says don't sell or incorrect item so it will also ring in that if they did try to return it. We also throw away food that is dented, not just merchandise. Thank you for your quick response, have a good day.
