Should we have a senior age limit for driver's license?

Philippines

My father just turned 80. When he applied for the renewal of his driver's license, he was almost denied the renewal of his license. He was told he is too old to still be driving a motor vehicle. Is there a law prohibiting those who are quite advanced in years from driving? If none, should there be one, considering that the elderly have slower motor reflexes and have poor eyesight which can affect their own safety and the safety of others while on the road? What do you think?

I would think that it solely depends on the capability of the person and not his age. I see many youngsters a potential danger on the road and i wonder how they got the license on the first place. If the licensing officer is fair and issues a license based on ones driving skills and other criteria, it doesnt really matter what age the person is ..

I agree with you totally, kiran8 that licenses are to be issued based on skills rather than on age. After all, it is not only the safety of the driver that is at stake, but also those of pedestrians and other motorists as well. Thanks for your response.

well for me, i think that they should not have done that. they should let everyone to decide for them selves if they still want to drive because primarily, they will not be the ones to be responsible if ever something happened to the driver. we have our own way of how to drive safely. that is why i think that the Land Transportation Office should not deny the renewal of licenses of drivers. that is all i can say about your discussion. i hope somehow my response helped you even just a little bit of information. thanks and godbless!

It is a good thing that the licensing office still allowed my father to renew his driver's license because he is still very independent even at his age. He does not like the idea of being a burden to others and likes to do things on his own that is why he still continues to drive. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. God bless you too.

I don't think that there should be a definite age limit, because some seniors are still very capable drivers. Older people often live with enough limitations, and taking their driving privileges just because they reach a certain age isn't right. I think the family should decide when their aged relatives are unsafe drivers and tell the driver tactfully that they need to stop driving, and offer to drive them wherever they need to go.

Yes, I think the renewal of driving licenses should not be based on age but on the capability of the driver. And it is such a nice thing for children to offer to drive for their elderly parents, when they become too old to drive.

I havent known any law in the Phils. stating age limit in renewing your drivers license.. But i think for safety purposes, there should be one. As u get older, physiologic changes take place and most common is the decrease of clear vision and motor reflexes as well..

We shouldn't have a limit as in a sense of oo your 80 you can't drive I mean there people like Richard Petty racing cars 180 mphs at like what 50 something better then guys 20 something and he could probably still do it if he doesn't. There should be more eye test and some hearing test for them and possibly a quick skills check and there licensee should be required to be updated more often.

I don't agree with an age limit , because everyone is not the same . There are plenty of people at that age that still get around fine. Having your wheels taken away from you takes away the little independence you have left . I wouldn't want it to happen sooner then it has to. Gee I felt safer riding in the car with my 80 year old mother then most 18 year olds. I think a test would be best.

Of course because as man ages, his or her reflexes are slowly affecting one's ability to drive. There's should be an age limit for precautionary measures ok?

My personal thoughts, it should be a Case by Case basis on what is considered too old to drive. My FIL is in his early 80s and still driving, and still Loves to drive all over. For me, I feel that for some if you take away their Driving priveledges you are limiting them, and it could be a downfall for them as well. I do think maybe they should be made to go thru a Doctor's Exam or something to make sure they are still able, but no one should have a right to really Stop them from being able to drive as well.

I understand your anxiety because he is your father LOL, but look into in evry headlines or surveys on car accident, mostly are people at the young age, your father should be banned in the street because he is too slow that creates traffic, but recieving an accident is un immaginable, no body hits a slow truck , lol. just for laughs.

I m almost 72 and I still drive and it would be a disaser for me to get anything done if I couldn't drive however I hope that if I can't cope with it someone takes away my license. I believe in some states after a certain age you have to take a drivers test every year and that could be good. I feel that as long as the person has been tested and has passed everythig OK then they should be allowed to drive as long as they want. I have a friend whose 85 year old mother lived in Missouri just outside of St. Louis. Now that is a town I refuse to drive in if I can in any way avoid it. However this little old lady drove every day until one day she could not find her car. She reported it stolen and then called her daughter in Illinois 75 miles away. She called the rest of the family and they all went to St. Louis. The car was easily found but the mother could't remember putting it there even though it was in a parking lot where she parked frequently. The family took away her keys - found the papers for the car and sold it to keep her off the road. I think this was a wise move on their part. Their mother never drove again. I truly think it depends on the mental capability of the person more than their age.

I do not think there should be an age cap put on how long someone can drive and to what age it should be. I think the family should step in, if they notice that their family member is no longer capable of driving they should ask the person to surrender their license. There are many senior citizens who are still alert and able to continue driving, and they should. Some of them are better drivers than younger people because they are more careful.

Some seniors also observe road courtesy and follow traffic rules more often than younger drivers.

Hi blungel0830, well i think drivers license must have a age limit in order to avoid accident in the road. You know why i can say that i am infavor in that because senior citizen have a low hand and eye coordination which affect their driver ability that may cause accident in roads. . . Well that's all my response. Happy posting and happy earning. . . I hope i give a good reply to your discussion... Good luck to our earning career here in this site mylot. . . Godbless and MABUHAY!

I think there should be an age limit for senior drivers. It is all about protecting our elderly, keeping them away from harm. As what you've said, they've got poor eyesight and reflexes which is the main reason they are more prone to accidents, wouldn't you agree?

At present, there is no law concerning the age limit of those who can renew their driver's license. But I do agree with you that there should be prohibition in granting the renewal of the driver's license to those advance in age already. Let us all be reminded that licenses are issued but with it are some requirements to be followed by someone who ask for it. And one concrete requisite in the issuance (and renewal) of driver's license is the capacity of the driver to safely and responsibly drive his vehicle. Thus, the need for good eyesight and body reflexes are vital in this regard..A person advance in age, no matter how good driver is he when he's still young, might no longer be so effective in his driving capacity. So, there should be a law prohibiting the elderly to renew their driver's license.

Yeah for me there should be no law that prohibits anyone to drive even if he/she is old. Driving a vehicle be prohibited only to those who don't have right attitude on driving.

no i don't think so... it really depends on individuals... if the person is still capable of driving and very alert, i don't see any reason why he/she should not be allowed to renew his/her driving license regardless of the age... there are young drivers who are more reckless and drive more dangerously than older people... take care and have a nice day...

Sometimes I think there should be, but I fully understand why these seniors want to retain as much independence as they can, too. Besides, every senior is different. My mother is going to be 80 this year, and she's still a very competent driver. In fact, she's the one of her group who picks up and takes home everyone else who don't feel like they want to be driving to their class get-togethers. I had an elderly uncle, though, who was a scary driver at the same age. He felt he owned the road, and he'd pull out in front of other cars thinking they'd watch out for him. With the large numbers of seniors on the roads these days, maybe we need special slow lanes for them to drive in. That would help accommodate their slower reflexes and hesitancy.

The criteria for issuing a driving license should depend on skills and traits like reflexes, eye vision, hearing capacity, what a person is likely to do in a fit or rage, and obviously how good they drive. Age should ideally not be a criteria because many young people fare a lot poor than the elderly when it comes to such traits. Naturally, many people who are very old would disqualify themselves wwhen rated on such parameters.
