The song is entitled "The Unicorn" and is by the Irish Rovers. It's taken from a poem by Shel Silverstein. I've always loved it, too.

I remember seeing the Irish Rovers perform this in a pub once. They had the whole place up on their feet clapping and singing along. What a great song to get the feet a tapping and the hands a clapping! Such memories. Thanks snowcat and a Happy St. Paddy's day to you!

That's a lovely song and I can almost sing it, but not enough to tell you the title. Hope someone else gets it or I'll be up all night.
