Holy cow! You read that right. The sign for one of our local grocery stores is advertising apples at $3.49 a pound! That is like $3.49 for one apple! I can't believe this. At this price, I won't be buying any apples. They can sit on the store shelf and rot. I know prices are on the rise, but this it a bit much. Have you noticed a huge price increase in apples in your area? What price are apples costing you these days? And last, would you buy apples at this price or pass on them until the price comes down?

I wonder if they are cheaper at a Farmer's Market. I don't eat apples, so that won't affect me, but I've noticed other fruits I like are quite up there in the price department. It also seems like the place with the cheapest fruit isn't the place with the freshest fruit. The place I find the freshest fruit is also the place with the highest price.

In the past Aldi stores have had the cheapest fruit, and except for bananas, the ripest. Not a bad thing if you are close enough to shop often. On the other hand, they have the greenest bananas. Sometimes they seem to not even ripen.

That is true AmbiePam. I haven't been to our farmer's market in some time since we moved. I need to find one close to the new house.

Good observation GardenGerty. We don't have Ali stores around here. Seems like nobody has the market on everything fresh and good prices these days. I have to shop one store for meat and another for most everything else. I try to watch sales and pick up some things at Winn Dixie too.

That's crazy where do you shop. I really haven't checked the price of apples lately but they have oranges here for 33cents a pound.

My jaw is touching the ground!!!!! Whats going on, and I need to plant an apple tree! I cant believe that! This is horrible. I have not seen prices rise that high for apples yet, and I sure hope they dont and time soon. I love apples, and I would be sad to have to stop eating them!

I agree, and planting our own fruits and veggies is much better on the environment anyways! when we buy from the grocery stores that all take pertroleum, and many times the prices are higher because the items are not in season where we live, so they have to be shipped even further than normal! I have alread begun to grow my own herbs, and onions. I will be growing tomotoes and strawberries next!

Hi there jess and elle--yes, prices are getting a little out of hand. I think we all need to put gardens in and pray they produce a good supply of food!

The price is enormous! I live in Romania and the prices doesn't compare. Here, is half of pound per kilo. But also, our minimum salary is 130 pounds. We hardly afford healthy food.

I've noticed that alot of fruits and veggies are getting too high. Apples in our area are about $4.00 for a 3Lb. bag...oranges are a little higher. You just can't afford them. I plan to look at the roadside stalls this summer for our fruits and veggies. ~~AT PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS**

Roadside stands and open markets should have better prices I would think. And the roadside stands go directly to a family, which to me is a better way to spend my money. Who would you rather pay, a company or an individual?

Wow, that's expensive apples. I usually buy them in a three pound bag and pay about $4 - $5. At that rate, $3.49 a pound would cost way too much.

Wooohhoo, that is really expensive type of apples, are they GOLDEN APPLES? heheh. Apples here are expensive too, but not too much like yours for a single. We can buy apples here for one kilo costing $2.35. But it depends on the type of apple, the green crunchy ones are a bit expensive than the red ones. The green apples costs about $ 2.84 a kilo. If that will be the price for one piece of apples there, yes you are right, they can rot and nobody would be able to buy such a costly fruit. Happy Mylotting!

Thank goodness I am not a big fan of apples, so it won't bother me much, but I DO buy two (Mcintosh) apples a month though. Talk about prices on the rise, I always buy the same, cheap generic dish liquid and it has always been 79 cents, well two weeks ago it was 1.10 and now it is 1.89! I was so pissed, I left the store and went to the dollar store where I got some for a dollar! Why is this happening? Can't someone put a stop to this insane price raising? What is causing it? Can't the president freeze prices or something? I don't know why it is all happening and I sure don't like it one bit!

It is crazy, that is for sure! I saw a headline yesterday that said ethanol was the cause of higher food prices. I was in the middle of cooking Easter dinner so didn't get to read the article. They will come up with anything just to make an excuse for the prices rising.

I haven't bought apples lately, last time we bought a bulk bag of 5 lbs for only like 4$. They were smaller apples but led to a lot of servings! We ate them every day and couldn't even finish them all. I remember it was 4$ b/c right next to it was carmel apples - 6 carmel apples were 4$. That's when I realized the 5 lb bag was not only healthier but a much better deal. I wonder if it is because the type of apples i bought weren't as pricy or what, but I'll keep an eye out next time I'm at the store and see if they are more expensive now.

I don't blame you for buying the bag of smaller apples. That was a good deal! I wish this store would have bundles like that! This store is a favorite because they have good meat and usually good sales. Plus it is right on my path going home from work and easy to get in and out of. I hate having to stop at large grocery when I'm trying to get home after work. Ack!

Well I think that was at Meijer and the thing with Meijer is that the quality is sometimes questionable. Those apples turned out good, but once I got bananas that were practically old an gross by the next day! That is the trouble with bulk - it is usually a good price but you can't feel the individual apples to see what is in the bag.

I paid 95 cents a pound for some Golden Delicious apples last week. My sister got an 8 pound bag of Granny Smiths for $5.99 a few days later. Some apples around here cost a little bit more, but nothing like the $3.49 a pound you saw.

Maybe they were organic??? Usually, around here(Arkansas) apples are about $1.50 per pound. I was out earlier and saw some for 69 cents per pound. I try not to pay more than a dollar a pound unless one of my boys is begging and they are small apples (they last longer). There is no way I would pay $3.49 a pound. I don't like to pay that much for milk. lol

It seems that it is just this one store that has them priced so high. I have no idea why! Walmart has them for around $1.49 a pound and that is bad enough! It's boycott time on apples at the little store for me.

Wow, that's just plain old crazy. I couldn't imagine paying that much for apples. I could tell you what exactly apples are costing here. but I can tell you a couple weeks ago while walking through the produce section, i didn't pick up anything because i thought the prices were too high. But, 3.49? What a shame.

I am not sure how much the apples are in my stores but I know strawbeeries are like $3.99. alot of things have gone up food wise milk, the 99 cent budget meals have gone up a quarter the 99 cent pizzas gone up a quarter. It's crazy how things just keep going up and up. Food banks don't even have that much food to help pantries out. It's sad.

WHAT!? An apple cost US$3.49?That is like so so expensive,i can't believe who can eat that 3.49 apple and not feeling heart pain during recession.I don't see any rise of price in apple at my area,in fact the supermarkets are having promotions like 5 for $2 or what.By the way i am living in an asia country.i will definately not buy this apple but to walk past and laugh at myself about the kind of price for a apple.

Apples are about $1.80 per pound at our local Wal-Mart. Maybe the price increase has not hit here yet. Anyway, these increased food prices are why it now makes sense to grow food and sell some of the excess.

annberlin, That is a good question! It's robbery! I think that most people will pass up fruit with prices this high or go to another store. Once this store has rotting produce, they will lower the prices or quit selling it altogether. They usually buy a lot of local vegetables, but apples don't grow here. I guess the high cost is due to shipping prices. Have a nice day!

everything is just so darn expensive, it is hard when you don't have enough money to live on like me. I get very little fruit or vegetables in my diet at all. I don't know what to do anymore it is so bad.

If I go to Walmart and buy apples I could get a whole bag for maybe about 4 or 5 bucks. 3.49 is a lot of money for apples. That is so ridiculous. I would definitely pass them up as I am on a low income.

I usually pass on product at Walmart because it just doesn't look good here. I may have to go back for another look or go out of my way to a fruit stand. Last time I went there the produce wasn't as fresh as it used to be. I guess times are changing and not for the better!

I don't usually buy apples this time of the year, but I know that I won't be buying them if they are that price. That is insane! I would never give that price for apples. I know that I hear that the price of produce is always going up but I had not heard about apples.

I just know that everything has gone sky high now. I cannot walk out of the market without spending $50 dollars instead of 20 I use to. I hate it and gas prices are on the rise once again. I do not know how we are going to survive.

Yep, gas is back up to $2.00 a gallon here and fixing to go over. You know it is almost summer,so they say they have to raise prices. Always an excuse. I expect that by Memorial Day the price will be over $3.00 a gallon again.
