Manny Pacquiao is now a "doctor" (of Humanities)

I think this was old news, but so far I think only a few people know this. Apparently, the boxing legend got an honorary doctorate degree in Humanities from Southwestern University in Cebu. It's such a big thing to receive a doctorate degree, but I'm still baffled with the choice: Pacquiao, of all people? I'm not saying Pacquiao hasn't got the brain to get a doctorate (I can't prove that), but there are a lot of great people out there who deserve that honor more than him. What do you think?

Frankly, there are more PHD holders out there than there are boxing legends. I mean, I would rather be known as a boxing legend than as a doctor.

I agree. Being a boxing legend is something not anybody could have even if they work there brains out. He earned through the years of hard work and training. There are a lot of PHD holders that we Filipinos can not even be proud of. I mean some of them are in corrupt practices not just in the government but also in private sector. And I still do not know the criteria why they gave Manny that honor but I do know schools does that. I think just by being president or mayor of the city, universities can be a honorary something like that so I think being a boxing legend is a great reason for giving a PHD.

Probably it has something to do with his political ambitions. The more he gets something like this, would be like an aroma for people to vote for him. But it is not always the case right? But whatever the motive of these people who gave the award or the person who received the award, will still be put to test. Anyway, i don't have anything against PM, as long as he won't be getting an inflated / bigger head for the fights he won and made our country proud. His ambition to get into politics is not good idea, that is only my opinion, i guess he might get manipulated along the way by bigger men, and aside from that, i won't say more. Happy Mylotting!

lot of other people are also deserving of such honor.but i personally think pacquiao deserves it too..after all of the things he has done for our country.there was no doctorate degree that is in line with sports,so the title of humanities was a good alternative and appropriate to give.anywayz, even if he wasn't honored that title,he will still be able to get a degree in management once he's done with his studies in ateneo i think. happy mylotting!

Well, I think he sees himself as politician after his career in boxing. Anybody can gain a doctorate for as long as he/she earn and deserve it and Manny deserve it.

I was surprised too upon hearing this news. But what can we do I guess it is a privilege of the school that gave him the doctorate award to give him this honorary award. I think they based it from his achievements in his career which is rather rare in some aspects as he is the first one in the Philippines. So I really think its not about the brain but his physical achievements that merit his awarding of this honor.
