Is smoking a sin?

It seems to me -in Christian circles, at least- that most people are not comfortable with smoking, and that to go even further, most Christians assume that if someone smokes, they aren't a Christian. Is it a sin to smoke? I don't smoke for other reasons, but why does it have such a negative view on it (besides the health matters)? There's nowhere in the Bible that says that smoking is not allowed. I'd like to hear your opinion. If possible, use Biblical references to back your opinions. (Also keep in mind that this is in the "Christian" section, so no one get offended if you're not a Christian and think smoking is ok.)

Hello there Hewhoeatspie, to answer your question let me first tell you that smoking has nothing to do with your salvation and is not a sin to smoke. However, we are told to take care of our body because as we know our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit as it says in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 "Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body," (1 Cor. 6:19-20). By doing this command, we must be also careful of our health. And God is concern about our health. So if smoking will cause us to have disease, then we should stop smoking and live a healthy lifestyle. But it is still your decision to stop smoking or not. But when the verse says, therefore honor God with your body, then i guess it is very clear what it means to tell us. Happy Mylotting!

strawberry, if you go back in the scripture you will also see where the word of God tells us that it is wrong to use our body as a chimney. Smoking is wrong because this is of the world and as a christian you live in the world but you are not of it.

You make a very valid point. :)

Refer to my other comment. And the Bible does not explicitly say to "not use your body as a chimney."

I don't think smoking is exactly a sin, but if we look at how we are asked to look after ourselves because God is within us, it makes sense that to do something as harmful to ourselves as smoking will not be looked on as favorable, even if it is not specificly mentioned as sinful.

Well I am a Christian and I smoke. I was smoking when I came to God and He accepted me exactly like I was. I figure if I ever get to the point where smoking is my most serious problem then God will help me get rid of it. Until then I'm not going to worry about it. Instead I am going to work on my more serious problems. Art

all of your problems God cares about, from the smallest to the greatest. when you go to God, he said you must cast all your cares upon him not some, and I think you should be concern about smoking, because it is bad for your health and the people around you. the bible declares that your body is the temple of God, smoking is nothing eles but a bad habit and thats what God wants us to do to get rid of ALL our bad habits AND SURRENDER TOTALLY TO HIM.

Ah, but THERE is the debate. Is smoking a bad habit? It's bad *for* you, but is it really *bad*? See, the only defense that most people give is that "the body is a temple", which I believe is true. But eating junk food is bad for you, is that a sin? Or even something as specific as drinking energy drinks. Is Red Bull a sin? I do agree with you that God cares about all our problems.

Don't know for certain, but I've heard of people dying becasue of having too many red bull in a day. eventually all the junk we put in our bodies do catch up with us sooner or later. If we love our bodies we will avoid all junks

In the ultimate scheme of things, there is no "good" and "bad". There is "sin" and "not sin".

Smoking is considered to be a sin only to frighten you. If you are responsible and are aware of the effects of smoking on yourself and on other through passive smoking, then you will be careful when to smoke and when not to smoke. However, if you are aware of the harmful effects and still continue to smoke, then obviously it is sinful. by the way, what is a sin? is it an act for which you will be punished in hell after you die? if so, why be bothered about it now?

Your last sentence made me completely disregard everything in your reply. "If there aren't consequences now, let's live it up and deal with them later." Sounds like an irresponsible college kid.

I think for most it comes down to the whole your body is a temple to the lord kinda thing, and smoking is bad, it's bad for you, bad for those around you and bad for the planet. Gosh I should quit huh?! I don't smoke at church, not before or after or at functions, not even hiding outside, but they know I smoke and I haven't been shunned yet, maybe it's just a matter of exactly what church you attend and who's complaining. Part of being a Christian is also acceptance and forgiveness and not judging, sometimes I think a lot of people forget that when they judge others for things like smoking.

Smoking is not a sin,but smoke is not welcomed by most people, especially for those people who don't like smoking.I think you families would also suggest you to get rid of it if you got a heavy smoke. We all should work together to stop smoking as it is really not a good taste

Smoking is not a sin but it's one cause for a person to have a bad health. Our body said to be a temple of God so we must not do things to harm or ruin our bodies. Too much of anything is not good, if you smoke a little just to have release of tensions or to overcome boredom, I think this would not cause you deceases smoking bring. It's a matter of discipline still.

If smoking's a sin, so's drinking...and before our recent decades? Drinking used to be considered a sin by the puritans (who were the first wave of immigrants here in America), who came about because of the excess of drinking and partying where they were from -- especially in the church. From there it was "just in excess" and now no one considers it a sin at all. Most people aren't comfortable with calling drinking a sin...so as far as I figure, they shouldn't be comfortable with calling smoking a sin. It's easy to say something you don't do is bad, you see. I just like consistancy. I'm not a christian...I'm not fond of smoking and I'll never choose to smoke, I just won't judge those who do. I just pay attention to things that seem to matter -- the history of religion and this sin concept in concerns to our culture and how we live seems to be important, so I've read a bit about it. xD

hello friend, I don't think any religion has its written in its Holy Book that one should smoke. When you smoke, those around you become passive smokers and they get irritated. No religion permits that you create trouble for your fellow human beings so in a way, smoking is a sin for every religion. If you ask me generally, I don't have anything against a smoker, provided he smokes in a proper place, away from children and other non smokers. The smokers are mature enough to know about the hazards of smoking and if they still want to carry on with it, I am no one to stop him.

I am Christian and have never heard of any thing like this. There is nothing in the Bible that says that you are correct. But I don't feel it's a sin. I am a smoker alot of people don't like it but never heard of it like this in this manner.

I've come to the conclusion every single christian on the face of this earth struggles with one sin or another. Even if we get rid of one sin like smoking, we will still have 20 more to deal with and we will never perfect. Anyone who says they don't sin is a liar and if we weren't sinners, there would've be no reason for Jesus to come and do what he did. That's not to say to keep on sinning, but a person can almost drive themselves crazy thinking of all the things that are sinful..

Basically.....just because it doesn't say in the bible it is not a sin, doesn't mean its ok. Let me also make clear, that I don't think it will affect our salvation, BUT I am a great believer in the intuition God gives us...and if what we are doing feel wrong, then we probably shouldn't do it...AND I INCLUDE MYSELF IN THIS!What it all comes down to, is self control. Our bodies are temples....temples of which the Holy Spirit lives...should we therfore be abusing our bodies?. Smoking is just one bad habit, it contributes no more to bad health than eating junk food and not getting enough exercise does. So i think these should be looked at collectively. God gave us the power to change our habits when he gave us the power to choose our thoughts. God won't let us get tempted beyond what we can bear..if we can give up these bad habits, then we should...with God's help and prayer. Rick Warren, pastor and author of 'Purpose Driven Life' puts it simply when he says that to be physically refreshed to love others and do the work God wants us to do, we must take care of our bodies...eat well, exercise etc. The Bible says "Honor the Lord with your body" (1 Cor 6: 20) Now, I'm not suggesting we all live like monks here....God created the world for us to get pleasure out of it too...to not enjoy ANYTHING God provides would be an insult. I'm just saying maybe we should cut out, or down on the things we KNOW are bad for us.
