5 year old bitten his fingernails

lately i noticed that my 5 year old boy was bitten his fingernails and it bringsme some worried for it.i been told him not to bite it or dont cut his finger nail with si tetth,but later his finger tips was enjured and swollen i was scared for it i seach from any net search about it and i read that one of those problems are stress,or something bothering and upset, im worried and im thinking what i had done for him?do i have enough time for him? he is stress for something?he is studying in kindergarten. he is smart and active but he is not strong. his health is weak.

My son bites his fingers, not just his nails but all the way around them. It's nasty and we've tried everything the downfall of the over the counter stuff is that you have to apply it like 3 times a day, who has that kind of time?! For him though it is learned behavior, his father does it so he sees it all the time. If he wants to stop there are things you can do, gloves at night in bed, rewards, just being aware and pointing it out when he does it.... but he has to want to stop, otherwise it will just stress him out more an make the problem worse. Good news my son is 8 and has done it on and off for years and nothing has happened to his hands or him because of it. It's looked terrible at times but they always heal.
