AUSTIN — Texas lawmakers want to offer millionsin proposed tuition incentives to college-bound students interested in teaching high school math and science — as long as they promise to work in districts with the greatest need. Researchers from the University of Texas at Austin project the state will face a shortage of more than 11,000 certified math and science teachers by 2012 unless a system wide plan is in place. The catch: Students must agree to teach for four consecutive years at a school designated by state officials as having a profound deficiency in certified math and science teachers. Failing to uphold the terms of the program would result in having to pay back at least a portion of the scholarship. This is a great idea in my opinion. Unfortunately I am going to school to be an elementary school teacher, but if any of you are even considering being a teacher, you should look into this! http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/6338499.html

I think this is great also. But I am getting my 4-8 certification. I will tell everone I know though. I am in the UT system and so I am sure I will be seeing flyers about it soon at school. Thanks for posting it here!! I do not even think it would be bad to have to work where they want you to work. Your first three years are a learning experiance in themselves and I am sure that the state insists that those schools provide a great mentor system.

I think I agree with that statement. although I dont want to always teach in TX, I wouldn't mind working here for a few years so I could have my education paid for.

I am getting my schooling from the workforce network. I was laid off and they are retraining me. I have to work for 1 year in Texas. I do not have plans to leave the state but we have decided that we will save atleast 2 years salry and buy a house near water here in TX.
