What are you gonna do during Earth Hour?

Indonesia

Yes, yes, most of us know about Earth Hour this coming saturday. Most of us probably have commit themselves to turn of all lights and plug off all of our electronic appliances. I am one of those people too. And this morning, while on our way to my office, as i saw some of the road mark are those of the Earth Hour ad, i wonder... what are we gonna do during that Earth Hour moment? Aside from turning off the lights, of course ;) I'm still thinking about it, but what about you mylotter? Are you gonna do romantic, candle-light scene in the house with your loved ones? Are you gonna cuddle up with all your family members, taking this as a moment when you're all be together and can tell each other stories without the noise of the TV to drift our attention away? Any plan? What are you gonna do Earth Hour, Saturday 28 March, 20.30 - 21.30?

It will be hard to do around here with so many people fighting back flood waters. There minds are elsewhere hoping houses survive and on evacuating people. I am safe for now and will take part because I feel this is important. I hope many others do this too.

I hope you stay safe and will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. It's awesome that with everything you have going on you are still going to do this. In case you didn't know YOU ROCK!

OMG, carann, for a moment i thought you came from Indonesia as well!! There was a certain part of one of Jakarta(the capital)'s satellite cities, that was flooded, March 27, due to what people describe as little tornado destroyed a nearby dam. My friend's house is on the area as well, but thank god her house is not badly affected by the flood. I agree with Freedomg. After all that's happening to you, it's indeed awesome that you still want to take part of the event. I hope everything will be OK soon in your place. My prayers are with you. God bless, Carann *hugs*

I have decided that the lights in my home will be off during the earth hour.It is a great chance to participate in a universal cause to protect our beloved earth mother who has been vandalized by us recklessly.I have done my level best in spreading the importance of the earth hour and as a parent teachers association member I have managed to make the principal of the school announce to all the students to participate in this event.

Nice to know of what you have done.

Wow, Bala, that was so great of you to get the principal of the school announce the event to all students. Even if they're not participating in it, they knew about it now. And once they know about it, they cant really be ignorant with it, right? The best that i did was turning off all lamps and plug off all electronic appliances at my office. But not the whole office, just the lecturer room and the room where i work. Thank you for responding!!

Well, i've make it a habit to plug off the chord at my room every Friday anyway. Just extending my 'plugging off hand' next door is not that much of hassle :) so, did you know how many students in your school participate in the event, bala?

Thanks for a wonderful discussion Flower. I am going to observe this earth hour with my heart and soul but I believe in the cause very much. One hour is just a matter of time but it can do wonders if we join and observe it. I have motivated my known people to observe the hour. And it wouldn't be difficult either since the country I live in we get so much of current failure ever day. I have a query about one thing though. What's the media, multiplexes going to do. are they really going to stop their telecast? Or make bucks even at that hour! And what I am going to do in that hour? I will probably do some AIR TASKS. Thinking, planning, pondering tasks. What about you dear?

I am waiting for that as well. And watching the city with all lights off, in the moon light would be a great thing. Capture the precious moment. I will try to do that from my terrace.

Ah, i went to the mall yesterday and the lights went out hahaha... early earth hour preparation maybe? lol. I also wonder the same thing, and today a colleague told me that the governor of Jakarta instructed the electricity company to cut off the power on Earth Hour. If that happens then the media and multiplexes will go out too. But i think there are people that will get mad at that, so we'll see lol. I still dont know what to do. Maybe hit the bed early like Sugar's response. But i am thinking of going out, to see the town in darkness. Oh well, i still have a day to think about it :) Thanks to a wonderful response, Mimpi! :) and hope you'll get the best result from the AIR TASKS you'll be doing ;)

I would love just to stay in bed with the wife but..She has the weekend's off and that's her time with her family and so I think I will get the house ready for summer you know (summer cleaning) and some painting...
• Indonesia
27 Mar 09
staying in bed with the wife is of course much more preferable than summer cleaning, i bet ;) but if you gonna do the summer cleaning with the lights out, i'd say watch out for those candles! thank you for responding, robert :)

I keep my lights off most of the time anyway. I only use them when really necessary. I tell my family when daylight do not turn on the lights. But my family at home is always using the computer, video games & the TV.
• Indonesia

Wow, you're making me ashamed! I put on the light in my room for like always! Unless when i'm asleep. Why, because i once noticed that there's mice in my room!! And somehow i believe that by turning the light on, the mice wont messed in my room as much as when the light's off. Dont ask me how on earth i get that thought lol!! Kudos for you Cj!

well here in my city there are frequent power cuts so we have made many earth hours till now! I have not yet planned what i will be doing that particular hour but if the earth hour was during daytime, i mean switching off the TV and other appliances which require power, i think i will be watering the plants.
• Indonesia
30 Mar 09
oh, Cyfer, sorry to hear the frequent power cuts your city endured :( I live in the big city where power cut is very rare. Even if there'll be one, the government of the city will make announcement. But in other remote places in my country, power cuts are also frequent :( I hope by switching off the lights in big city can generate more power to the power plant in smaller cities to lessen the power cut. Lol, as the earth hour is during night time, i think it's difficult to water the plant! :) so, what exactly did you do?

I got it! It's a good thing I got a second universal laptop battery on St. Patrick's Day last week that I got at Office Depot (there was only one left anyway) because I rarely make a habit of turning off the lights sometimes. I got another one that's smaller, yet still works. However, in this case, since i'm a technophile/gadgetophile, I might try to switch to battery power for such a time. It's my way of being thankful for portable electricity that I save up to keep me from being in the complete dark. I don't have my own house or an apartment just yet, but I might practice saving electricity in my own way by using my battery-powered appliances like my LED lanterns, my portable radio, anything using such power sources you can carry around. I got my USB battery chargers for my laptop as well just in case. I might also bathe with bath beads or take a bubble bath during my time while being off the grid and listening to the radio at the same time like before. After all, such items helped me out during the winter power outage that I had earlier this month, and another power outage when someone crashed into a power pole. They'll help me out again during Earth Hour. Practice makes perfect anyway.
• Indonesia
27 Mar 09
winter power outage sounds scaryy!!!! but lol, good for you on that second battery!!! I think it's ultra smart to have to portable power source. After all, practice indeed makes perfect, and there's nothing like past experience to teach us that, right ;) And talking about coincidence, my boyfriend has just suggesting that we'd spend the hour listening to his battery operated radio! Oh my, the power of portable power source.. So, anyway, with two handy laptop battery, i guess you'll be reporting the Earth Hour event of your place live? Will be waiting for your live report, then, Maxwell! :)

Some cities in my country join this project, such as Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and so on. However, my city doesn't join it. Frankly, I will not join this project as at that time it's the family time. My child may not be happy if it's completely dark at home, especially it's not his bed time yet. I like to save the energy in usual. If it's OK to use fan, then I won't use air-conditioner. If I have to use air-conditioner, then I will set the right temperature rather than low temperature. I even go to work and go home on foot:) I have many good examples to save energy. I love China

I think this Earth Hour is like Valentine's day. One special day to express your love to your loved one. But really, we can express our love to our loved one anytime we want it, right ;) So, not joining Earth Hour, in terms of not switching all your lights and unplugging your electronic appliances, but... every day of the year you always opt for the energy-saved resources (like walking than driving), i think is not a big deal. Then again, that is much better than join in Earth Hour but the effort to help mother nature stop at that. I like China too (i think i should just use the word 'love' for my own country lol). I once went there for a holiday. Too bad i dont understand the language!!! But aside, everything's wonderful :)

It will be dark here. We are sleep deprived (a bit).Just had a bay 3 months ago. So hopefully we will spend that time taking a nap. No joke. We could use it!
• Indonesia
30 Mar 09
lol, a 3 months baby of course gonna make you sleep deprived!! not that i've had one already, but from my colleagues story, i kinda glean the idea of sleep deprived :) But, i also know older people who say that once the baby's grown up, you gonna miss the "sleep deprived era". Dont hold me accountable for this for i'm only saying what other are saying! :) anyway, i hope you did use the Earth Hour for that nap! :) thank you for responding Er's Mommy!! :)

Hi there! My sister and I are thinking of just lying in bed and telling ghost stories. Or if we can't handle that, we would just talk about anything under the sun, or in this case, anything under the dark haha lol. Anyway, I am really going to support earth hour. I hope all of us will.
• Indonesia
30 Mar 09
Athina, ghost stories are scarrryyy!!! If i'm your sister i'll opt for talking about anything under the sun (though the sun set already lol). So glad i'm not your sister cos i'll be screaming lol. Sorry for the late reply, was not connected during weekend :) so, did you or did you not tell ghost stories?? ;) say hi to your sis!

I have been handing out earth hour fliers in our neighborhood as well as promoting it to the kids in the art class I teach so my kids and I along with a few other kids from the neighborhood are going to be walking around the neighborhood looking for blacked out houses and putting thank you notes from mother nature in mail boxes of those houses. I know it sounds corny but if you want to get kids excited about this sort of stuff sometimes you have to take the corny route.
• Indonesia
30 Mar 09
Freedomg, that sounds fantastic!!!! It may sounds corny to some, but definitely not for me! i thought it sounds fantastic!!!! hhmm... sounds like dejavu lol. Of course that would make the people with the blacked out house feels like mother nature appreciated their switching off the lamp. And everybody loves to be appreciated, no? Plus, it gives good vibe to the kids too. So, fantastic it is! :)

i will surely participate the earth hour... i saw a commercial at a local channel. i will support it because i know that pollution is destroying our planet. just want to tell every body here that i live in a town where we have a cement factory and a coal powered power plant. and now they are constructing another coal powered power plan just adjacent to the old one. this really sucks because people doesn't even care about the future generations. to all people here at mylot please support earth hour, support clean air! help save our plant, save our future children!

Oh, luntian, i'm sorry to hear that :) must have been bad living near a factory, with the noise pollution and the quality of air and water :( hope the government will hear your voice!

The very least thing that i will do is I shall turn of all light and electric appliances for 2 hours. We need to save at least something for our children and grandchildren. I shall also see to it that everybody around me is aware of this event and i shall take the responsibility to educate whoever is not aware of the earth day and make him understand the true philosophy behind the idea.

Wow, kudos for the extra 30 minutes ;) So how many people did you get influenced to switched off their lights, abhi? I was not able to convince that many people. Most people that i told about Earth Hour forget about it when the Time came lol.

the www.earthhour.org believes that by switching off all lights for one hour is the modest way of conserving for energy for future uses. its the simplest and most effective way of telling people "hey, start conserving energy or else..." was it effective? in terms of acknowledgment and information dissemination.. it was.. in terms of the amount of energy conserve.. not really...unfortunately... but of course its a good start.. and i hope people who will participate in EARTH HOUR will not just switch off their lights, instead all their electric appliances.. a moment of darkness and silence. let MOTHER EARTH BREATH... so as we can further BREATH and LIVE...

Camhi, i read in a facebook application causes (support earth hour) what will happen if the lights in Jakarta (where i reside now) turn off for an hour. Listed are: saving more than 284 trees, enough to rest 1 power plant to give electricity to 900 villages, creates clean air for 568 people, etc. I think that's pretty much of energy conserve in just 'mere' one hour. Ah, our Hindu friends here in Bali just had their new year yesterday. And in their new year, they turn off lights for one whole day! I think one hour of darkness that happen around the world can rival one day of darkness in Bali. We should be ashamed of our brothers and sisters there. If they can do it for one whole day, we should be able to do it for a 'mere' one hour, right :)
