Spent less than expected

Have you ever gone grocery shopping, got everything on your list, yet spend far less than expected? Today was my shopping day. Normally I spend $200 a week to feed my family of 7. If I'm really cheap, I can get away with spending $150... but that's usually if I stick to just basics, and buy extremely cheap dinners. This week I did not stick to basics... I bought a few extra items. I bought breakfast foods, lunch foods, and dinners like pot roast, beef stir fry, and ribs. Yet somehow I only managed to spend $120. I have no idea how I pulled that off!! That's $80 below my budget! What's the lowest amount you've ever spent on groceries?

Looks as if you picked up on some very good sales. The last time I spent alot less that I'd projected was a couple of weeks ago when we went out to gather our bi-weekly supplies, and we budget 70 dollars for that. We only spend 32 and got everything we needed and then some extras that the kids wanted. It didn't dawn on us until we got everything put in the truck and was getting ready to head home, then the WOW factor hit us and we had to check to make sure everything go rang up and we got everything we surely needed to make it threw the next two weeks. We surely did. It was nice to do that, but it only happens once in a blue moon, so we can't count on doing it everytime we go to the store, but gosh, it surely would be nice.

Today i went shopping after my boyfriend told me what to get and gave me 36 dollars i only spend 32 because i saved with the buy one get one frees and the coupons i had. He had to work today and I'm unemployed so i said i would go since I'm not busy. It all helps and I'm glad i didn't spend all the money because now i can go get a birthday present i need to get. I like saving money and its always good. I went grocery shopping with my mom last week she spent 208 but got enough meat for over two weeks so that was really good and it was a save because this week we just need vegetables and some stuff to have with the meat.

I normally end up spending more money than I expected to. I don't really have a set amount that I spend every week. I just go and buy the things that I need to get and the things that I want to get. I probably spend way too much on food every month.

Hey kats! That's really incredible! You got all that for only $120! Damn! That's really good shopping! I can't really say what is good for me because I have $172 to spend for 2 people for the month! It is supposed to be for 1 person, but since my bf is living with me and doesn't feel the need to contribute to the food bill I have to really stretch it and it is getting to be almost impossible and he just doesn't understand! The meat alone takes up half the budget! I am seriously considering having him move out because I can't take the stress and when I do go on full disability if I get it they will cut out my food stamps and the I will be in bigger trouble!

That's certainly a tough spot to be put in. I wouldn't appreciate having to use my limited income to feed someone who isn't helping me out at all. Does he at least pay for other things to help you in any way? If he's being a complete free loader, I'd definitly have to kick him to the curb. You can't put your own needs aside for his. If it's that stressful on you, you don't need him. A partner isn't supposed to create more stress in your life, they're supposed to help you cope with the stress you have!

That is just amazing. I wish that I oculd feed everyone on that amount of money. My son and I share the food bill and it works out a bit more expensive as we feed the babysitter and also give her cooked food to take home to her children. she is a single mom with five children. I can't bear to think of her children going hungry.sometimes I give her an extra job as I don't pay her for looking after the twins. So I pay her if she does an extra job like cleaning windows or washing down the patio furniture. Jobs that I am not able to do physically. Blessings

Good for you, in today's economic troubles, every dollar saved is a dollar earned. It is extremely good that you can save money in any way possible, however, remember to not be too caring about your money. It is better to save your money and be extravagant occasionally than to never reward yourself or show you what the real meaning of life is. It seems that you are doing a pretty good job of that thus far though, so keep it up. The least that I think I have spent on groceries for a family of five is about 200 dollars. I am not as good with money as you probably are, but I don't think that I am too spendthrift either. Good luck and I hope that you keep up your excellent work!

the lowest amount i spent should be on talc powders when i got another talc powder free with it. then on shaving cream where i got $2 off on it. i guess if we keep visiting different grocery shops we could get many items at discounted prices.

Congratulations on saving money after shopping. I most times doesn't make any list while shopping. Sometimes I spend more money than I expected. I also love to save couple of money while shopping. I think I should make a list so that I don't miss the things needed and doesn't buy things that isn't in the list. I buys groceries mostly once in every month together from marginal shops or from big bazar. My monthly grocery bill is around Rs 2,000. I don't buy all things and buys other things sometimes weekly or sometimes daily like milk, vegetables, etc.

I usually have a budget like you in a week, to control the expenses. If I just buy what is really needed, I also spend less than the amount alloted. We can use the change to other needs.

Not usually, no. I end up spending more than I wanted to. Good for you. It's that whole penny saved thing. The grocery fairy just smiled on you!I do remember going in and spending a little over $60 once and making it work.

Its great when that happens, the place I do my shopping from now is great on prices so most times my shopping always comes in under budget. I just have the odd occasion where it comes to a bit more than expected. I always buy the stores own brand though and only buy other things if they are on offer.

That's pretty much what I always do too. I think buying generic brands are cheaper than using coupons on store brands.

LOL give me some tips on how you do it, spending less that expected.. it will be a big help for me.. hehehe thanks and happy mylotting!!

For me, it is the exact opposite. I go to the grocery store, and in my mind only spending say 50$ and after checking out, i end up spending 80-90$ with only the items i went there in the first place!
