Have you ever had a dinner party?

We have never had a dinner party. I am really debating on possibly having one with like a foriegn food flare. I'm not real sure how to host a dinner party though. I defiantly want to try it though. I think it would be a great way for us to have a good time with our friends.
Any advice that any one can give on hosting a dinner party? Do you ask people to bring dishes, or do you just cook?

I have never had a so called dinner party but i have had many parties, sometimes people bring a plate but i never stipulate that they do this...I would love to have a real dinner party but my place is way too small for that sort of thing...
