A 77 yr old relationship came to an end as the last British airways flight flew for London from Calcutta on Sunday (29/3/2009) morning. It is not only a matter of great inconvenience but a feeling of nostalgia that left the people on both the sides sad. After all, life is not just about the commercial aspect! Anything left you with such nostalgic feeling of late?

I hope that this is not the last we have seen of British Airways in Calcutta Mimpi. Maybe it's due to the economic downturn. Once things improve i'm sure the flights will be back again. I can understand the nostalgia, because i feeel the very same about a very similar subject. It's our Airport. It shifted recently to a new location. I work very close to the old one. I was so used to the constant landing and take off of flights, the passenger movement and so much.It had very special memories to me as I remember having walked as a child into the cockpit of the aircraft. After the airport has shifted, the whole place looks so deserted and i get these nostalgic moments everyday in the morning when i get to work.

It was not able to handle the air traffic any more in terms of the infrastructure. It was more or less in the heart of the city and this had started to become a problem. Also they had to plan for future expansion and more flights.

It is a sad moment for the Calcuttans. We are very emotional people and this has come as a blow to the old people. It would be greatly inconvenient as well. There would be no direct flight from now on. Its only connecting Air India flights that will connect to London through Delhi or Mumbai. Or else you will have to take Emirates which is again not a direct one! I can understand your nostalgia Alok. Why did it have to shift?

That is really sad. I am very keen on traveling and so I feel cross when airlines pack up some of their routes or fold completely. It is the economic downturn and the recession that are affecting airlines. I felt sad when an airline that is my 4th favorite stopped flying from London to San Jose in Costa Rica. Then two airlines that I hoped to go on went out of business. I flew from London to Cape Town in January 2009 and the plane was half empty. Taking off the airline had to have passengers sitting in the seats that would balance the plane, strange. Goodbye to a 77 year old relationship.

That is too bad that the British airlines flight from London to Calcutta will no longer exist. It seems that is happening all over the world. So many things are going on it is sad to see the loses of so many things.

This has to do with the recession and economic downturns. But we are emotional people and tend to get so much nostalgic. And not to forget the inconvenience Mary. Its a sad thing indeed.
